Ya, I’m amazed that the owners manual contains so much technical information. I just bought a ‘78 cb400t hawk I. So, spoke wheels drum brake front and back and no electric start. It became the cm400. Thanks for the video.

The earlier 250/400 had no screw out plug to get to the balance chain nut. Which you only had to slacken, then tighten back up. I had three of these Bikes, the first was known here in the UK as "Dream" but in the US was known as "Hawk" The later versions, had a screw out circular cover, around the size of a "Dollar Coin" and all you needed to do was back it off every 1000 miles, then re-tighten it. Job Done. The quadrant takes up any slack in the chain, pretty much like the cam chain which uses a blade that pushes against the cam chain. Only with both engines, the bike needs to be not running, and cold before these jobs can be done. If the bike is high mileage, chances are, both chains will be shot.

I saw the other video about the stator. Did you ever fix that and was it the stator? Also curious if you did where did you get a stator? I see prices all over the place making me not trust the cheaper ones as being the correct stator.

This motor was in a barn and had a good oem stator. I bought this one for the stator to put on my bike because i also dont trust the aftermarket

Thanks for the video. I have a knocking noise on my rebel 450 I’m trying to trace. I have to check this balancer chain

Ended up being the starter clutch. The bolts backed out of the starter clutch that’s bolted into the crankshaft

I think I’m having the same issue. Possibly more! I had it stored for about 10 years then decided I wanted to start working on it again. I had it fired up and it seemed to be running good so I shut it down and started building again. (I’m bobbing it.) Got it just about together and decided to fire it up again. It cranks over but seems to slip and then catch again making a terrible sound. Still not 100% on what it is exactly.

great video, looking at buying one of these. Seems like the adjustment spring on the tensioner must be shot on yours. My KLR650 has a very similar tensioner setup for the balance shaft and there are often issues with the setup.

@@mostlymotorized bought one 2 days ago, head bolts are stripped out but that should be a easy fix. Some random bolts are missing and whatnot. Pretty easy engine to tear down. I’ll be sure to check the balance shaft adjustment while I’m in there
