Whoever did this video needs to be commended. It’s nearly textbook quality camerawork… 1. You start with a shot looking down the bridge. A nice setup with the bridge for scale. 2. As the ship comes into view, you get a gentle pan and zoom. 3. Once the tip of the ship almost hits the right of the screen, a nice pan to the right. 4. Then, it gently pulls back, keeping the bow of the ship to the right side. 5. As the stern comes into view, a pan to the right to follow the full view of the ship. 6. Slowly pulling back to get the tugboats into frame. 7. A little zoom to get the maneuvers of the tugboat. 8. Then a little jog to get Alcatraz Island in frame for a moment. 9. And then a pan to the right to get a view of the city skyline. Excellent job! I’m sure another professional could find something wrong in there; but overall, I think whoever this should get a pat on the back. :)

The tug towards the end of the video was the Ahbra Franco. 6800 horse power with z-drive propulsion. I work on her sometimes, but not that time. I was on a smaller z-drive tug off of Alcatraz. It was neat making history that day! I think their experiment worked with bringing those 1300+ foot container ships in. All they need to do is raise the container cranes 20ft or more to work them properly.

The Benjamin Franklin is here in Long Beach right now. We haven't began working him yet, with the festivities and all. One hammerhead has already been raised. I'm not sure if it was done in anticipation for this massive vessel or because of damage. I'm going to pick this job up tomorrow, 2/22/16. I'll do my best to get photos. ILWU LOCAL 13.

I was on one of the tugs that assisted to the dock. That thing was huge coming along side of it.

+sailorman1011 Boats, at least looking at and learning about them, are one of my closet passions. :P I just like the history, construction, and learning about how they were operated. So, yep, I loved it when the tugs came into view. ;) The one on the right was doing some fun turns. I could see the front thrusters going. Was that yours? They look like fun craft to operate. I often think of the water almost like it were outer space. So something like your tug, with its maneuvering jets of water, is very much like I imagine what would happen outside a space station someday. Sorry. Trippy, I know. That’s just me. :P Comes from reading about the old sailing ships and how they would be away for months or even years at a time. Depending almost solely on their ship to carry them safely to their destination. Good stuff to read about. ;)

There were other container ships larger than 18,000 TEU when the Benjamin Franklin was launched, those are on the Asia - Europe run. The largest in 2019 is the MSC Gülsün with a capacity of 23,000 TEU.

I shot this video with a Sony Nex5-R. I used KZbin's stabilize this video feature which steadied the video, but it created some ripple effects in the ships movement.
