Since the 1932 revolution which ended 150 years of absolute monarchy in Thailand, the kingdom has had 13 successful military coups and 11 attempted coups. In other words, the military has proven itself to be a constant threat to civilian rule and democracy, ready to grab power when the opportunity avails itself.
But its intervention in the nation’s politics has generated a lot of resentment and resistance from Thai citizens who want the military to stay out of politics for good. To prevent that from happening, the military has drafted a new constitution which gives the institution a permanent role in politics.
To what extent can the people accept the new political framework? Will the military’s permanent presence in politics bring about greater stability, progress and developments to Thailand? Or will it lead to a continued turmoil and further deepen authoritarian rule in the country?

Here in Indonesia in 1998, we revolted so hard that our military dictator Suharto (most corrupt president in the world) forced to resigned. The reformation was not smooth but it lead to a stable democracy. I hope our cousins in Thailand and Myanmar will be able to resolve their problem with the military dictatorship as well.
@RedHanded1969

Reformation that is not smooth & a stable democracy is a HUGE understatement that is a LIE. 1000 citizens were massacred & 500 burnt to death. Suharto himself was never charged & his children still enjoy the fruits of the stolen money. And many w blood on their hands is in power w/in gov today.. Reformation 98 led to only superficial chg, just enough to trick many of indoctrinated & uneducated masses. True reformist such as Gus Dur & Ahok are ousted from politics. And Indonesia's Corruption Index showed no chg in 30yrs. In fact Thailand economically is doing much better..

1998 revolution start from asian financial crisis that began in Thailand. Then Suharto was replaced by his VP Bj habibie, Abdurahman wahid, Megawati (all non-militar person). The democratic election only began in 2004 election, still military person in charge, SB Yudoyono.

As a thai I can say that this is a pretty good overview of the overall situation However, there's an important part that documentary touched upon a little but didn't delve much into. The monarchy had always influenced politic through the military, it's just that lese majeste law prevent people from discussing it publicly. When you hear people talk about "institution", it's a fair bet that this is what they mean. They are the one who make the call whether to allow a coup or not, and it's a mutalism relationship. The military can do anything and say that they are protecting the monarchy, protecting the traditional thai culture, while monarchy get the military into power to get rid of anyone unfavorable to monarchy or "too popular". But the situation is changing, the majestic image of monarchy is in now in tatters after recent throne succession when that bumbling idiot took over and didn't even have the decency to keep up appearance. You can see this in the turnout of royalist supporter which is a husk of its former self, people are also less afraid to criticise him now. The rest is just waiting for the legacy of the old king to peters off. After that it would be citizen vs military which might not end well imo. who know what the future will bring, I do hope for the best though.

Don't think we have crappy government. I've been living with military rule all my life and lived happily with them. The problem why the military coup took place is that most of the government before coups were puppet US government and Western imperialism. The reason why military arrest people is because they destroy the city and vandalize and threaten innocent people to join their movement (protesters). In Myanmar now the reason the coup was taken is because of corruption. 1. They disrespect the nation's religion (Buddhist) 80% majority by vandalising with signs near Buddha's neck and steal gold from Buddhist temples (NLD). 2. They want peace but they use violence (protesters,NLD) protesters vodka bomb innocent people's house because of we didn't join their movements and one of my neighbor's house was vodka bombed because we didn't join their movemt. 3. Protesters are killing citizens by "dalan" in suspect that the citizens who were killed were "informing" the police because the protesters threaten them , 100+ household were killed by protesters but in reality the dead people didn't inform any police or anything. It was just for revenge and taking lives of real innocent people. Last week 4 Teachers were raped by rohingyas terrorist group because they(teachers) were doing their job and not following the protesters idealogy . They cut off those Teachers head off after. They say they are "democracy" but they are killing innocent citizens so what is real democracy? This looks more like Nazism than democracy. The reason why rohingyas terrorist were killed is not because of racism , it is because they were taking over arakan region by murdering innocent arakan Buddhists by using Muslim extremist rights. They destroyed Buddhist houses and cutt off their head. I had to watch this on tv LIVE. Now these rohingyas terrorist are led by an ex-al Queda terrorist member ( you can look it up) . Even an ex-member of Al-Queda terrorist admitted that they were funding s.e.a terrorist muslim extremist groups. The "leader" of arakan rohingyas terrorist have brutally murdered people and tortured more than the military in Myanmar. 1.Burying people alive and then dig up when they have almost no skin or anything left 2.using murderous tortures to people who join this group to get away from military : standing on a person's neck, putting sticks up in people's ass(not joking) 3. Raping and murdering citizens that aren't Muslim extremist. Please asian brothers, we need military. They may do bad things but there are far more bad people and I want to tell you something : PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO WESTERN POLITICS , PLEASE DONT MESS IN OTHER COUNTRIES BUSINESS YOU WESTERNERS, mind your own goddamn country before judging others. Asians please don't fight against each other and just protect your country from these terrorist and western politians trying to intervene in our problems.

According to the Credit Suisse report, the bottom 10% of Thais hold 0% of the wealth, being either in debt or having no documented household income. The poorest 50% of Thais now hold only 1.7% of the country’s wealth, while the richest 10% now hold a massive 85.7%. It’s working great for some people in Thailand. Not many though.

Not sure it ever will. Democracy is quite clearly not a 'one-size fits all'... and it definitely comes across as a pervasive western arrogance that it 'should'! Seems obvious to me that it's the 'Thais' themselves who will work it out... being their country of course! The military coup in 2014 was necessary to prevent a civil war. Those politicians they arrested where pushing people to fight each other for their own personal benefits. And they didn’t make a difference about what side the politicians where from. Also they didn’t start the coup till they had the permission of the King. Democracy isn’t the ultimate form of politics. In fact it’s full of flaws, as already Socrates realized. So restricting it isn’t always a bad thing, and sometimes the only way to prevent a disaster.

The real question every one of us in the world need to ask is, what should the role of a government be? To work for and serve the people and be subject to the will of the majority of the population of a country...or for the people to serve and be subject to the will of a group of people that have put themselves in a position to control and rule over a population. Who should ultimately be in control and how will the general population be best served???

This is what happened to Myanmar in 1962. Ne Win stole power with a military coup. The only way to foil coups is educating citizens on self defense. Right to defend, right to arm comes hand in hand with right to freedom. Arm the civilians like in old days, educated in martial arts and self defense. Educate citizens on politics, economics and use of defensive weapons at early age.

If you know the actual name of the Thai capital. You might know the real history of the heart of continental south-east Asia and the Sukhothai is not the first’s Siam capital. Major events during each reign, with an assessment of the character of individual Kshasatriya, a group of Brahmans, warriors and their particular achievements, together with those of other major players. Some important events were attempted to terminated. The history of events is blended with descriptive passages about monuments surviving today that are relevant to support their own and illuminate history. Political development is paralleled by Thailand’s cultural development, especially in relation to religious and royal flourish architecture. Politicians and Merchant guilds are at another level in the hierarchy of agreements. The people of Thailand are sophisticated, meditated and courteous. Freedom is the oxygen of the Thai soul. The westerners never understand and won’t be able to invade the land. Thailand’s historical progression has been complex and the foundations of national identity, religion and monarchy in particular.

Why few Thai people stand against the military comparing to the Burmese people? From my point of view, I will consider the "Carrots and Sticks" idea. In the case of Myanmar, the military gives people much more sticks than the carrots. The Ne Win regime in the 1960s used the isolation policy which ruined the Burmese economy which once one pf the most properous in Asia, more prosperous than Thailand at the same period. The military also used the iron fists to everything opposing them, the domocratic actitivists, the minority ethnic groups. So, the opposing power is much more. While in Thailand, even the military used the iron fists many times to the people they regards as their enemy, but Thai military gives the Carrots and Sticks equally, during the 1960s, Thailand became the US ally to fight the communists in Indochina and recieved many supports from the US, such as the scholarship, the investment and some kinds of development. The government also supported the technocrats to work in many development projects. And they also know how to play with internationnal politics, great powers, so they don't face as much boycott or sanction as the Burmese military faces. This gives Thailand a space of development comparing to neighboring countries in the region. This is why the opposing of the military in Myanmar is much more than in Thailand.

I think it's not a comparison but a concern about how Thailand could end up some years later. It is a concern for me. I don't think Chan-Ochoa really wants to take such an extreme stance but who knows what will happen after the next period of unrest. Eventually, there has to be stability.

The political drama never changes, the strong and rich strive for power and wealth against each other outside and inside. No one can trust that includes the closest person. No one really does it for people, when they in, grab as much as possible give scrum to the people. Corruption is the way of life in all sectors and all levels. ASEAN a long way to go, it gets lucky because of the trade with China but also increases mega-corruption. Evils always evils, never change. Good content but not all truth, interviews obviously partisan and lies.
