This entire time I was wondering how Korean college students are able to afford to their lifestyle. This answers my question.
@sungwoochoi51524 жыл бұрын
As per my experience, most of students do part time work or tutoring during his/her college period. Of course children from rich family do not need any additional work for them. However I used proper government financial support and also scholarship from the University. We cannot say some people are representative for all people in Korea. I believe most of them are not following that much for fancy life - at least in my younger days.

Dear J Pusa: I was an American consumer debt collector for 30 years and I can tell you that the idea that the consumer has a "choice" is a joke. Consumers are driven into debt by scientifically designed advertising that is intended to override the consumer's "choice". Read a recent book by Liza Featherstone entitled "Divining Desire" to see what I mean. She discuses the extensive use of "focus groups" by social psychologists who are employed by advertising agencies. Over the last 70 years, these social psychologists have honed their art to the point where advertising has become has become psychologically irresistible to the average American consumer. And "focus groups" are just one way of accomplishing that. "Subliminal advertisements" is yet another and there are more. As a bill collector, I saw the fallout of such deceptive and corrupt advertisements, with consumers who were talked into debt that they couldn't handle for something that they really didn't want in the first place. If they can do it in America, then they can surely do it in an American puppet state like S Korea. America Is NOT the country which gives its people the most freedom. It is just the country that is best at tricking its people to believe that they have the most freedom. It looks like S Koreans have fallen for the same trick. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

I noticed that 50 out of 49 in Korean movies dramas except traditional one I have watched are related to someone's debt and they have to work hard and afford everything that they can to pay it and sometimes they have to be gangs or burglaries or skip their lives because of these debts. But I wonder their country is easy to earn money so much that's why they have to be worried about financial problem? Everyone in Asia wish to have chance to work in Korea more than any other countries in Asia because their highest wage. As normal the foreign workers can earn more than 2k US dollars per month. I think this would be easiest to Korean to earn money more than 10 times compare to foreign workers.

Basically, payday loans. These loans are known to be predatory and prey upon people who they know have a low chance of paying back within those 2 weeks (so interest rates will begin stacking to be the benefit of the lender). Youngsters are easily swayed because of a multitude of factors, including lowered financial literacy.
@AkweliParker4 жыл бұрын
It’s easy to sit in judgment and scream “personal responsibility!!!” But consider these unfortunate folks never had a financial education, are immersed in and pressured by a materialistic society, and are bombarded by lending companies with offers of easy money. These companies prey on people’s lack of financial acumen, which they were probably never taught. Looks like South Korea could use a Dave Ramsey-like figure (just maybe a bit less shouty).

I agree, even tho I have plenty of money to waste I still sell the things I don't use anymore and I never buy the things I don't need. There is no use of it staying somewhere in your house and collecting dust. I still drive my 2005 Mazda 3, it still runs perfectly fine, so what's the point on buying a new one. Instead I bought 2 apartments both in rent which are making me almost a full salary passive income. Guys spend your money wisely!

Majority of Koreans do not live such way. Most of the people plan their income and try to spend as they can afford. If some Koreans have lots of fancy stuffs, it’s just bc they are rich. Do not generalize things without actually seeing it for yourself.

Most Koreans have to live to a certain standard to be accepted in their social circle. At the same time, they were raised to think that that is the only way of living. My student cannot imagine what is really like being POOR, as in POOR.

This was a huge social issue in South Korea last year and many financial aids programs run by the government have been now implemented for those young in serious debts. Wonder why this Singaporean media focused on this in particular at this time, without any further investigations of the current follow-up measures to help them.

I don't understand why people are taking loans to go to universities. Because nobody in my country does. Is it because universities in my country are in low ranking so the fee is low? Or because people in my country know debt is bad so they don't want to be involved in that?

How are credit card companies lending so much money that they KNOW they aren't getting back? What's the business model here? Are the loan debts being sold on to another party by the dollar?
@imode19694 жыл бұрын
Because credit card companies can package off and sell the debt (typically for 2-5% of the loan amount), then write it off from their corporate taxes as a loss. Besides, people who default make up a minuscule percentage so it's simply a cost of doing business.

Very vague and unclear reporting of numbers. Is the debt because of gambling or college? You lump these together like they are similar things. Why count the 15-18 year olds in the unemployment calculations? They’re not adults. What does the trillion dollar debt mean? Is the info more digestible if you do debt/household. You need put context around the data and communicate your ideas more accurately.
