Pretty honest answers by Esther although she seems to have to tried to link everything to her dad to support the base of her claims. I gotta say, respect to Auntie Peng for opening the shop and selling her original recipe. 30 years of working there is no joke. I stayed and worked in the vicinity, and I still frequent the area. Anyone remembered Oriental Supermarket at the far end? If you do, you are a true blue Eastie. Been patronising Dona Manis for many, many years. They used to sell buns to the morning crowd, one can always see Auntie Peng, her hubby and Uncle Tan manning the stall. So go figure what time they actually started to work to get those buns ready. Auntie Peng from what I observed over the years, she's a straight talker and doesn't sugarcoat her words. I always see her just racing against time to present her bakes to the crowds. I used to jest with Uncle Tan that he calculates faster than the calculator. They know their roles and play them well. To be honest I didn't see Esther and her daughter till Uncle Tan passed away. The original store exists but sadly it has lost it's spirit. I am pretty sentimental about that spot actually, after patronising for donkey years including testing and buying their CNY goodies. And to be fair, I bought from both shops to test which I prefer, and Auntie Peng's version clearly stood out. Try their chocolate tarts too, they are heavenly. My take is Auntie Peng is the OG and creator of the banana pie, so Dona Manis can't claim to be the original. The form exists but the substance has gone elsewhere. How can Uncle Tan know the exact recipe when he doesn't bake at all? I find the last part involving the daughters as a low brow tactic to evoke emotions, it felt really fake to me to be honest. Esther's daughter is much more articulate and driving the narrative. Also which staff from the documentary made Auntie Peng's daughter wear that outfit, it looked so off, she's usually very low key baking in the background. Final thoughts, the market is big enough to accommodate both stores. There are specialised retail areas which sell the exact same items and there's no reason why K.S.C. can't be known for banana pies. I do hope both shops can make peace and reconcile, peace out! ❤

20:30: I believe the daughters chose their own outfit? That means Auntie’s Peng daughter is less classy. Her teeth are also a mess at such a young age. So many teeth are decayed and have fallen out! I’d think twice about ordering from someone who has poor personal hygiene even though many ppl say the OG’s pies are better. Esther’s daughter looks more well-groomed and classier-looking like her mother. She speaks better too, like someone from a rich family. Auntie Peng’s daughter looks like someone from a Chinese-speaking and blue-collared background which her mum is.

Actually not difficult to decipher the feud from the video: Esther said she tweaked the recipe given by her dad so it’s no longer the original. Aunties Peng was the baker so she will have the original recipe. Aunty Peng said Esther was never in the shop but when she wanted to make changes to the recipe after she took over. So Aunty Peng find Esther bossy, did not agree to the changes in the recipe and obviously was not happy and did not get along well with Esther. All these probably drove Aunty Peng to break up the business relationship, even though deep inside she still want the business to go on since it’s the business she has been working on since day one for over 30 years. Aunty Peng obviously would not tell Esther she is setting up another shop so she has to find an excuse and said she is retiring and of course she can change her mind as well. Technically she is retiring as she has handed the business to her daughter. It also makes sense for Aunty Peng to set up shop in the same mall as that’s where her regular customers are. Nothing wrong with that and she already explained that it was by chance that the new shop was next to Esther’s. My conclusion is that you should only eat banana pie once in a blue moon and don’t eat the whole slice as they are not very healthy 😂

i think it's unfair for auntie Esther to keep insisting that her shop is the "original banana pie". The fact is that auntie peng is the true creator of the recipe. Even if she had created it under the name of Dona Manis, it's still her creation. So to keep insisting that she's the original recipe under the name of her father is morally wrong. In my perspective, I believe that Auntie Peng's decision on opening her own brand right beside Dona Manis was with the intention of carrying on her view of "the legacy". We must not forget the fact that she has been working in that area for 30 years and has already fostered close bonds and relations with her regular customers. Also it's quite evident that Esther and Esther's daughter are rather well off. Taking into account that they are both fluent in their speech and speak in a very refined / reserved manner, where as though Auntie Peng's speech is definitely more emotional, it's more authentic.

Auntie Peng has been in a very long term partnership with Uncle Tan. Everything is good between them. Auntie handles the baking and kitchen operations, Uncle handles finances and maybe logistics and does not interfere with the Kitchen. After his side of business was handed down to his daughter, his daughter wants to be involved it the Kitchen operations, going as far to change the recipe. For what? Change is only needed when you start to see a decline in your business or there are other future forces that could put you out of business (technology products are a good example of needing change). For Banana pies, the taste is timeless and they were still getting a very healthy flow of customers. If someone who hasn't really been involved in the business takes over simply because it was handed down to them (they didn't work or put effort to earn it) and decides to overstep her boundaries by getting yourself involved in Kitchen operations instead of just managing finances which is what they should only be doing, would you be mad like Auntie Peng and break off the partnership? Cause I am sure a lot of people would unless they are the ultra submissive kind and can't speak for themselves. Another important thing to note is, once the recipes are changed, it would mean Esther would have complete control over the Kitchen instead of Auntie Peng, effectively "nullifying" Auntie Peng's position as an owner and she'll become like a regular employee who is just baking for Esther. As you can see from this video, you could see that more people still preferred the original recipe (auntie peng) over the new Dona manis. So technically the recipe change didn't prove to be so successful after all.

My family grew up eating Dona Manis's pie. When the business split, I bought pies from both shops and did a blind taste test on my family (literally blind, as visually you can tell which looks original). All of them unknowingly chose Auntie Peng's pie. I now buy my banana pies from Auntie Peng (cause she's the original), and some other small pastries from Dona Manis (in honour of the history). I guess for those who are familiar with the taste, they will choose Auntie Peng, while new customers will have to try both to see which they prefer.

wow! what an interesting story! In my opinion...i think things would have been different and a little bit more peaceful if only Auntie Peng opened her shop elsewhere. That would seal her confidence that she really is the original maker of the pie if her shop will have the upper hand even though she is on a different place. We can't just move Dona Manis as it is there for many years already so Auntie Peng should have been the one who adjusted. If only she opened on a different area it would be a better competition and not be a so called "feud" I can only imagine how thick the air is every single day there. That is sooooo stressful. Whoever gets the better show of customers would likely be the one who gets the right to say they are better than the other one. In my humble opinion and from how i understood the video... > Dona Manis started the product > Auntie Peng is the original recipe maker > Esther tweaked the recipe handed to her 🤔 Hmmm...is this in Singapore only? I think i need to visit this when i go there. looks good!

We don't, because today's Breadtalk is an over-commercialised company with automation churning out sub-standard products, rather than a small family business where the baker gives their products character, and is often the same person fronting the business to sell to customers. Almost every humble family business started this way.

I thought this rivalry is so funny and adorable. Both sides are clearly passionate about the business, just from different perspectives. The "feud" is also potentially good for business because people will be curious to try BOTH to see how they are different and which one they prefer. Auntie Peng and Mr. Tan each played to their strengths and that's why they were successful. I hope the daughters can do a collab someday and continue that legacy. I can totally see them investing in a cafe together showcasing a delectable selection of pies, with suggested coffee pairings too, like the sweeter version would go well with a dark, nutty Robusta, while the more subtle flavored one would bring out the best in a lighter, more floral Arabica. It would be wonderful if they could even diversify their products to other styles of pies besides their flagship product, coconut cream, perhaps, or banoffee? Or a limited edition series of pies featuring other types of bananas? Possibilities are endless when people work in harmony.

1)Being the original doesn’t make it the best 2)I can only see someone with a lot of ego. You have the boss and the baker, if the boss doesn’t set up the shop, the baker probably has no platform to showcase, no matter how good she is. She has the chance to develop her recipe all due to the opportunity of the platform given to her. 3)Question, why didn’t the boss pass the shop to the baker?Give her a share when he was alive? (After years of seemingly really good relationship??) 4)Ego makes people petty, I only see one petty person. 5)The daughter was given the shop to continue her father’s legacy, and that’s what she is doing, to her best ability, with or without the “original” baker. 6)The daughter comes across as a pragmatic person, not likely to allow anyone to hold her or her business, hostage.

Feud aside, i didn't know Banana Pie was a thing in Singapore. Then again, I'm Malaysian. Im so impressed by how innovative the foods are in Singapore tbh.. Even the hawker foods there are quite innovative. I love banana flavoured items... Banana cake, banana smoothie, chocolate banana cake from Secret Recipe 🤭... As for the feud, I kinda understand Auntie Peng, because she feels discredited and the only reason the daughter take over is because ya know, blood line. Tbh, its unfair, if you're partners, shouldn't it be shared? So auntie peng take has to work with blood, sweat and tears for the success of the shop, ending up with nothing. Tbh, i think her efforts were discredited and the shop was given to her daughter because blood lines over a hardworking partner/employee? "Heros aren't born but made". As for Auntie Peng opening a new store, why d f not? I understand her because heyy, im petty af too 😂. Im so invested in this. Tbh, i just don't like company bringing in relatives to work in especially when they take things for granted and they are freaking not competent. Biasness. Because the company im in is the same, keep hiring the relatives but its the staff and employees that are doing all the work. Not appreciated of the employees 🙄... Dayum, this makes me emotional too. 😂.. I just hate incompetent people especially if its a relative or a friend of the boss because you can't bring it up or offend.

To put it simply, if Steve Jobs (or the engineer) leaves Apple to start another company (let's call this company Orange) selling iPhones, Apple is still the original creator of the iPhone. Orange can say they employed Steve Jobs who worked on the creation of the iPhone, but it cannot legally say Orange is the original creator of the iPhone. So Aunty Peng is the one with the original recipe & Mr Tan was the partner that handled the accounts. When he passed on, most likely, Aunty Peng wanted Mr Tan's heirs to continue with the accounts (and her children to continue with her recipe) but Tan's heirs wanted to be involved in the cooking process which irked her so she left to start her own business where she could pass her legacy down to her children. Personally, I don't know how Mr Tan could have the recipe when he wasn't involved in the cooking unless he had been watching Aunty Peng in action all the while & writing it down to pass to his children. The last few times I went there, Aunty Peng's hubby was the one helping her cook, not Mr Tan. From that & the interview, it feels like Aunty Peng wanted the recipes kept within her family.
