I actually asked some of my Japanese friends about this incident when i was there in 2011. They don't like to talk about it much, but the basic consensus that i got was that it was a nightmare. So many absolutely depend on the train system in Japan. No one really drives, so they take the trains. They're easier, it cuts down on emissions, etc. One of my friends was there for it. He was about 19 at the time. He remembered running for his life after he started seeing people drop, or seem to fall asleep, next to the trains. He couldn't see what was happening to them, so he just ran. He got most of the way outside, when he blacked out. He woke up in the hospital, and was told he'd gotten a minimum dose of the gas, thankfully not a fatal dose. He woke up exhausted. He was told he's been exposed to Sarin, he didn't know what it was. They told him that he was very fortunate that he'd gotten so far away from "ground zero," his words, not mine. When he could speak again, he asked about the rest of the people in the station. All he got was a sad sigh. He made a full recovery, and is still alive today.

He actually did not. Reality is that while he proclaimed that both the 1994 and 1995 attack was part of a greater plan to overturn the government etc. it was all done at times where he needed to throw off the police and Japanese armed forces to investigate Aum. One of the reasons why the Tokyo attack failed as badly as it actually did, was because it was a spur of the moment attack Asahara ordered a two days before. The only reason why they had DF to synthesize crude Sarin was because unbeknownst to the others, one of the chemists had saved some of the DF precursor. The trains and time was chosen specifically because the trains in that area at that time, was mostly used by police and government officials going to work. It was a ploy to throw off the police and government from the impending search and arrests of Aum and their members. He was an utter narcissistic psychopath, and power over others was all he wanted.

I think it's very important to point out that most of the perpetrators were from a generation of people who grew up in an extremely competitive environment, as a result of the baby boom and economic prosperity which made it very difficult to move forward in the school system and access the the top universities. Despite being very succesful and at the top of Japanese society(they all graduated from the best schools and universities), these people must've felt that the country had robbed part of their individuality through extremely stressful education and social pressure. They wanted to destroy what they hated the most and killed many innocent people in doing so. I think most anti social behaviors (not just in Japan) stem from the perception of society as an evil, mololithic entity filled with injustice. It's easy to fall for "spiritual" conmen when society alows all kinds of bad things to happen, and destroying it seems easier than changing it or improving it through peaceful means like volunteering, political activism, etc.

I still remember this day. I just graduated high school in the same month and I was so ready to go to college in Tokyo but that news really scared me. Prior to this, they used the same gas spreading around the area where they used to have headquarters. There was a rumor that was done by this cult but police could not avoid this huge incident….

What do you mean IS destroying? Religion has been around for almost as long as humanity has existed. Way worse things have happened in the world which had nothing to do with religion. Are you honestly saying that every person that follows a religion is a terrorist or uses it to do bad things and destroy society? As a whole, religion mostly brings peace to billions of people and they don't harm anyone at all with it. On very rare occasions, crazy people use it to their advantage to justify doing horrible things. This could happen in pretty much any community because you find crazy people everywhere. Put a little bit of thought into what you're saying before you put literal billions of people into one box. Besides, "cult" is a better fitting word for Aum Shinrikyo rather than "religion". No religion supports or encourages terrorist behaviour.

This incident, along with rise of many other cults in Japan caused Japanese public--not all--would rather not to follow any sort of institutionalized/organized religion (for example Roman Catholicism), and would rather if want to be some sort of spiritual, follow the Shinto or Buddhist tradition that's already integrated to and shaped Japanese culture for centuries.

A documentary, directed by Tatsuya Mori made me watch this report. Very frightening what happened. In 1995, I was a Johrei Center member, here in Brazil, and after I left the monthly cult, waiting for the green sign at the car lights, people from Brazilian neo pentecostal church Iurd gave me (very hidden) their filthy newspaper, mixing Johrei Center purposes with Asahara's fiendish cult. I was very sad because of that. If Brazil doesn't take care about their fanatics, what of bad could happen? I changed in my search for God, but Johrei Center's purposes and philosophy are really noble: basically Johrei, Ikebana and natural agriculture, and their basic spiritual ideals: health, peace and prosperity. May God protect us!!!

No such thing as "military grade" Sarin. It's either purified or it isn't. And Aum had shown that they were capable of synthesizing pure Sarin. They used a very pure Sarin in 1994. The rushed circumstances of the 1995 attack is why the Sarin was diluted.

@@raydiaz2772 Right. You have absolutely no business talking about this, because you clearly do not have a clue. Let me fill you in a bit. I'm an organic chemist, but more than that, I specialise in organophosphates, including fluorinated phosphates. Sarin is the second hardest of the four common nerve agents to make, only surpassed by Soman. In terms of what is the easiest to hardest. Tabun VX Sarin Soman Aum had the capacity to make Sarin because they had the economics of a small country, and they had several highly educated chemists, engineers and physicists at their disposal. However, the best Aum ever did, was a batch that yielded 20 kg of Sarin which was used in 1994. ALL the steps in Sarin synthesis are hard. The input chemicals need to be 100% pure, each step then needs to be purified, and so on. It's a long time consuming and very expensive process. Let me put it this way. After WW2, the US forces got hold of just about every bit of information the Germans had on Sarin manufacturing and they also had the men who set it all up help them. Despite that, it took the US government 7 years to get a large scale production right. You don't understand how difficult it is to deal with the HF that is part of Sarin, nor do you know the complications and dangers associated with just creating the DC and DF precursors. Explosive dangers, toxic hazards, waste disposal, then scavenging the acid molecules from the Sarin etc. etc. etc. Easy? Yeah right. You are talking about one of the most complicated and dangerous chemical engineering challenges that has ever been. Hell, do you even know how hard it is to get 100% pure Isopropyl alcohol? Sarin is so tricky to deal with, that due to the short time between Asahara called for the attack to the day of the attack, they ended up with a Sarin that was maybe 30% pure at best, despite having a small batch of pure DF on hand to begin with. Aum spent years and many millions on their Sarin program.

I worry about the "innocent" Aum followers, the ones lower down. If the attack had been successful (whatever their goal was) and unpunished, would the violence have built, involving more and more members? I think it would have. Even if that day was further off, if rumours started spreading that Asahara was involved, would people see him for what he really was or would they hand-wave away any guilt? In the 20th century and, we as human society say "never again", but the number of times people hijack their followers' wills and do horrific acts still happen. I can't believe "we didn't know" as an excuse because one should know or find out.

@@fcos9704 Not really. You are correct about the 30% though. However, using Sarin as a weapon is much harder than people think. The method they used, could probably not have been worse. It was a rushed attack that was poorly planned. Aun was capable of producing pure Sarin as was used in 1994, but due to the two days they had in 1995, there was no time to distil the Sarin and thus it contained all the chemicals used as acid scavengers.
