How is it possible that North Korea, one of the poorest countries on earth finances a nuclear weapons program large enough to challenge the USA? The answer: Bureau 39, a legendary organization nestled deep inside the government apparatus. Its aim is to procure foreign exchange by any means possible to provide Kim Jong-un's regime with money.

He probably reacted that way due to shock, possibly believing that the people he was talking to were section 39, scrutinising his responses and if needed, purging him. It's fear you see.

The question in my mind is how long is such a situation tenable or feasible before social revolt,uprising and capitulation of oppressive regime.
@hzhang12282 жыл бұрын
the quality of life is steadily increasing even if they are poor. you have to look at where they started. an "oppressive" regime is actually more stable than a more free form of government, which the reason they pop up during times of chaos and instability. if they were to end it would be the will of other nations. that is the reality unless you believe in some form ideological version of the world. in reality for people to revolt they would have to be on the brink of death with nothing to lose, and starvation is old news for N Korea. this is why they will be relentless in their pursuit of nuclear arms as the US showed what would happen if they did not, although ofc N Korea sits at a more geopolitically better position.

Hundreds of years. See the history of feudalism in Europe. It's basically the same practice. The only real chance at breaking it is somehow getting a critical mass of uncensored internet to the people without getting them killed in the process.
@pedrob3953 Жыл бұрын
It didn't happen in the 90's, the time of massive famine, so it's less likely now. North Korea is an efficient repressive machine. As long as it manages to guarantee funding, and the geopolitics doesn't change, it's going to be this way in the future.

There was a time when I would have accepted the logic of sanctions against N Korea. But now it seems clear that the purpose of those sanctions are to damage N Korea and I am not able to understand how that is different from an act of war against N. Korea.
@ClaudiaMitchell-jn7fw Жыл бұрын
China backs North Korea, we declare war on North Korea and we’re in WWIII with China. 🇺🇸
@Matt-cr4vv Жыл бұрын
Because in theory you sanction them from trade and eventually they’re forced to negotiate since without trade as a nation you have no money. And if that happens you avoid a true war abs death and accomplish your end goal. Obviously it can be futile if outside parties ignore the sanctions and trade with them anyways.
@pedrob3953 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. That's the way they see it. That's why the official in 21:35 says, they do whatever it takes to break the sanctions and never budge to the enemy.

there are thousands and thousands of defectors. i highly doubt they are at any real risk. there are defectors that are way more higher up in the government that would be a bigger target. (like the guy who showed his face) that live in korea with very little fear. north korea would be going way out of their way and expend way much of their resources to take out such a small risk like the person whos face is blurred out. getting into south korea as a north korean is close to impossible ontop of them having to also smuggle weapons into south korea and then also avoid being arrested. the chance of the north coming for them is extremely unlikely.

When will people realise that sanctions against a country are entirely counter-productive and do not impact those they are intended for? Instead, they affect individuals who should not be sanctioned at all. Sanctions are, in essence, nonsensical.
