I quit smoking years ago. Lately been working from home and my neighbours 2 doors away from mine, smoked at the corridor everyday. I could smell it in the house! At times i could also smell smoke from my bedroom window. It must have been blown upwards or downwards from the neighbours smoking at their windows! We don't care what smokers do to their body but when it affected the rest of us, fault is at the smokers! Yes ban smoking please!

My neighbour downstairs smoke constantly and i believe there are numerous smokers. Informed MCST about it but still smell the smoke often. We always have to rush to close the balcony doors just like the owner in the video. It's really frustrating!

I myself used to be smoker for over 20 years since teen ! But I USUALLY go to parks to smoke because when I was teen, I don't like to show my parents that I smoked. And I got used to this, even after I was 30 + year old, my parents would STILL never ever see me smoking although I am sure they knew that I smoke ! I quit smoking for good since 10 years. Because I do not want to lose even more of my important tooth !! I would RATHER still have other important tooth and be able to continuously eating delicious foods ! And also, if a tar or nicotine can easily soften my super hard tooth, then just imagine what they can EASILY do to your lungs too ?? Now every time I smell someone smoking below my HDB unit, it actually made me feel like sick ! Everybody dies, but they say that dying due to smoking is worst, like suffocating or drowning at sea ! And also, it is much better to die yourself without affecting or injuring other people's health ! God will surely punish you even worst in the hereafter for being totally inconsiderate such as these ! If you want to smoke, please go to the middle of an open area such as the middle of a park. If I can do that easily when I was young, so can you ! And also this way, it will indirectly TRAIN you to smoke lesser. And that is the reason why I was able to quit smoking quite easily for good, even after 20+ years of smoking !

When measuring impact of 2nd hand smoke on air quality, it would be fair to mention that the air quality in Singapore is already way above the WHO guidelines. Pollution kills more than smoking & passive smoke combined but because we don't smell it, it's easier for the public to accept cars than smokers.

do not conflate the two problems. 2nd hand smoker have no choice and are force to "live/die with it". you used the word fair? no, if fairness comes into it, it is for the 2nd hand smoke victims. is it fair to them. air quality in general is another problem. these need to be handle separately. how many hours are you on the roads where car pollutants is most? how many hours are ppl are at home? many are always at home. also, using the ultimate measure "kill", how many kill is not correct approach. 2ndhand smokers suffers for years and years and then fall again victim to diseases, illness and cancers from 2nd hand smoke. also, transportation is essential. and it is nearly impossible to "argue" with a smoker that smoking is not essential for the reason you are trying to reason with a drug addict. nicotine is a drug. more deadly than any hard drugs because it is silent. smokers "get away" from responsibility and liability by claiming ignorance and denial and demanding sicken victims prove it. it is already proven. he/she is a smoker. he/she is his neighbour. what if there are more than 1 smoker? who is guilty. all of them.

I live in the city, on a main street. I paid more for an apartment facing the back of the building where the air quality is good. The front apartments, have terrible air quality, because of the diesel fumes from the trucks that drive by. My neighbor does not smoke, but in the day time it is hard to breath in his front apartment. He hates the poor air quality, but chooses to stay living there because he saves a lot of money because the rent of the front apartments is very cheap, because of the bad air. When I was a student, I did not have much money. I was able to rent a very, very cheap apartment. It was so cheap, because it was above a dry cleaning company, the fumes from the dry cleaners was very "toxic". The worst experience I had with 2nd hand smoke, was with a neighbor who often cooked some kind of recipe with stinky fish. The smell was so powerful it made me dizzy, and nauseous. I never smelled anything as bad as that, and it would take 3 hours for the air to clear up. After that I always rented modern apartments, that were better sealed/insulated so I did not have to breath in my neighbors air, and to have better peace of mind with more soundproofing. Don't rent an apartment that faces the wind, if you are concerned about air quality. The man is probably paying cheaper rent because his apartment is less desirable. You get what you pay for, bud.

If I want to start submitting a bill to ban Smoking in HDB or anywhere near, now is the best time to gather data and when the right time comes, there is evidence to back on the increase of people getting cancer due to second hand smoking. The more the data the better it is. Also tackling Covid-19 is MOH and regarding Public Health especially on smoking is under MSE which governs over NEA and possible MND because HDB. Which if a smoker is smoking outside it disperses into the air and vanishes. Car exhaust fumes are just as deadly if not worse than smoking. Sit in a traffic jam with 50-60 or more vehicles in a city, its a hot day, people have windows down (not all cars have air conditioning). All those cars running with fumes coming from the exhausts, can see the build up of all the car fumes what harm do you think that causes to people walking around? Vehicle emissions contribute to the formation of ground level ozone (smog), which can trigger health problems such as aggravated asthma, reduced lung capacity, and increased susceptibility to respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia and bronchitis. There you have it! But nope you think it is right to discriminate someone who smokes, but will not think twice about jumping into your cars. Especially NON electric. As most are still using petrol (gas) stations. Before you mention electric cars, they are not practical everywhere.

I have neighbours who has been smoking at his front gate for 3 years. 18 times a day. The secondhand smoke spreads to our unit through our main door and windows. We spoke nicely with him. Applied for centre of Mediation to work out solutions but he turned down. We seek help from NEA and town council including our MP But they can also issue notices to the neighbour rather than police the situation. We have spent hundreds of dollars for air filter systems but the smoke still persists. But the problem still persists. We are taking neighbours to Civil court under neighbour disputes Act. I have 70year old parents in my household. And they deserve a conducive retirement home. Let's see how it goes.

Inconsiderate smokers are a stain on our society and should rightfully be shamed. From us non-smokers: we don't care what you do to your own body. Do what you want and deal with the consequences. The problem comes when YOU are the cause of someone else's health issue. Second-hand smoke CAN cause lung cancer snd can trigger respiratory irritation and inflammation to others with medical conditions. I have respect for smokers who smoke only at designated areas and move away from others but for smokers who smoke at the staircase, at the window, at bus stops, at corridors, you need to be sued for endangerment of other's health.

There should be SMOKE ROOM just like the airport. Centralised localities within neighbourhood designated for smokers within the room. The upkeep should either be tobacco companies and smokers’ e-payment per entry. Anywhere else is then unlawful and a HUGE HUGE FINE imposed. New Zealand is already moving towards banning sale of tobacco to people born after 2008, and reduction in number of shops that can sell tobacco from 2024. It's a country with population density of 18 per Km2, versus Singapore's 8,358 per Km2. NZ has a smoking rate of 13.4% in 2020 vs SG's 10.1%. With a high population density and comparable smoking rate, it's no doubt more non-smokers are affected by second-hand smoke in SG. Be it at home or outside, smokers are seen everywhere smoking while walking, cycling, waiting to cross roads, at void decks... All these selfish behaviours affect non-smokers and it's not that smokers are oblivious about their actions. What's $19,000 to the government, or even $20 million for a thousand smoking cabins? It saves lives and healthcare costs and prevent residents from carcinogenic pollutants. It's priceless. The authorities ought to act fast and firm. Failure to act firmly by prohibiting smokers from smoking near balconies and windows is an act of condoning their behaviour, and is causing health issues to the non-smoking innocence lives. Act fast, firm and bold!

Please do something for those of us who are doing remote work and remote learning at home. The argument that offenders need to be captured on camera is questionable. Not every hdb has balcony. You have missed out corridors, staircase landings and central rubbish chute areas. A lot of neighbors like to smoke there especially at night to enjoy the cool breeze and share their “fragrant” smoke with their lovely neighbors. These people are horrible. Their liberty at the expense of others freedom. What can we do? Approach them every time they smoke their and sour the relationship? It’s not so much of educating victims of secondhand smoke to be amicable rather educate the smokers first to be considerate! I support legislation. Government should open their eyes. Yes it should be banned. But even before this approach, NEA should be more proactive in their enforcement using existing laws. For examples, smoking in void decks, shelters,lifts, Coffeeshops, toilets are not enforced. Not once have I seen an enforcement taking place in the heartlands. It is such a lackadaisical attitude of NEA that I think they are actually pro Smoking. Back to this ban discussion, Amy Khor always comes out with excuses why this ban cannot be easily carried out. Since PPI is also produce by cars and cooking oil, then following this logic we should also ban cars. It’s not fair for those who have no cars to be affected by people using cars. Right? Same goes for BBQ on the beaches and people frying at home, etc… Are you ready to follow that too? Also according to the expert, the test on the balcony could not be attributed to smoking. If anything they should have run a test with a balcony with no neighbours smoking and then compare, but of course they may not get the results they wanted. Singapore is very polluted due to the refineries around and PPI levels are above WHO standard in many parts of the island regardless of smokers. So should we close our refineries, ban all cars? The 300 death per years have no data showing whether those come from people living inside the house with the smokers or in a neighbouring block. These so call expert, especially the Dutch Lady, is no expert, she is not partial at all and doesn’t answer the question of what is really harmful. She merely shows that second hand smoke is existant and has an effect, but doesn’t show what is harmful in the long run for example for a family living next to a smokers household. If you walk in the CBD, you will probably have the same effect with local pollution. I am not a pro smoker, but I hate when supposedly partial journalism has an ideological agenda. I have stopped smoking and starting vaping for my family, my neighbours and my health, but now I have become illegal… Great!

After all, with the rationale behind current restrictive laws on smoking in public, allowing smokers to smoke at home but allowing smoke to escape out windows and balconies is simply a loophole. my family is a victim of secondhand smokers. We have been suffering for years. Despite all the complaints written to the HDB, town council and NEA. Nothing has been done by the Authorities. I guess we have to die in the hospital bed and haunt the smokers.

my neighbour literally smoke non-stop like a chimney. we couldn't even stay in our living room when he or his wife were smoking despite sealing my door(seal whichever opening we could find). I couldn't even have a proper gardening session outside my own flat without smelling his smoke. best part is, he love to open his main door whenever he smokes. The other neighbour living beside me also complaint about his smoke, they have children too. Could we rollout a simple rule to ENSURE these smokers close their main door whenever they smoke? They could smoke all day but these smokes please close your door.

@@jameswelch1054 it all depends on the buildings wind direction. my unit's air flows from the smoker's unit, unfortunately. if he closes his door, im ok. but if the smoker lives right below me and i have to close all my windows whenever he smokes(especially when he smokes whole day), then its really too much.

I have a Malay neighbour who smokes regularly by the kitchen window. Due to his action, my dad and Mom would suffer from cough and throat's irritation, I conveyed my distress to them politely that my parents were suffering coughs because of his smoking routine by the kitchen window, his wife apologised and will remind his husband from doing so. Weeks gone by, he still carries on his habit, I decided to confront his husband I was told that I'm racist? I was like WTF ? Sometime how I wish I was in US ,things will be very different. I don't wish to escalate this matter and get police involved. I wish to solve this issue amicably, has anyone encountered this problem before ?

Another idea is to divide apartment complex for smoker and non smoker. Let all smokers indulge in all pollution they created. Only i feel bad for the babies and kids who have to suffer health problems from adults who commit to this action without think the consequences to others.

Would 'pay per use' smoking zones in the apartment areas should solve the issue? The 'pay per use' could be similar to car park deduction to pay for the time being spent inside the smoking zone.. The smoking zone shud be spacious and shud have smoke absorbents so it wont affect the non smokers. Soln like this will solve the problem i guess. Hope smokers dont mind paying for the smoking zone as they already pay a big amt for a pack of cigarette :) and they too dont want others to be affected..

Yes, I agreed. I live in a terrace house, and yet I can still smell when my neighbour smokes. I can only imagine what it looks like if I lived in high rise apartments
