In the US, the big Brands also tend to make the house/store brands. At a factory I used to work at, we could have one batch of product and just switch the packaging from big name brand to store brand half way through. Its literally the exact same thing.

"Almond is almond" Sums up the house brand vs branded. You're just mostly paying for the advertisement costs for buying the branded one. In fact, some house brands actually buy in bulk from the suppliers themselves (removing the middle man) then rebrand it themselves since it's cheaper.

Sometimes branded has better quality. But no hard and fast rule. Sometimes house brand could be more expensive than branded. U need to do some research and experience to know. Nowadays, online buying could even be cheaper especially during special day and vouchers, cashback, coupon

@Bob yup, you get what you paid for, LOTS of ADVERTISEMENTS in one product against No Advertisement for the same thing. YOU basically paid for the advertisement because you need to be amused, delighted and be told what IT is not, after all.

Everything including Dryfruits also have different qualities. It's upto brands to choose between what they want to procure, sort & sell at what price. In this case, many countries have non retail-chain shops→ individual ones have sorted in large bags by different qualities instead of different brand names. Get as per your requirement & pack there. Because some brands either make expensive packs & some are low qualities like having mold(fungus) or dusty or the item itself bad quality. Thus, it's better to check before than after-sales legal cases or loose money, time, energy, effort, things during need & mental peace & satisfaction.

@Bob Depends on the type of product ofc, but I actually noticed when it comes to food, house brands tend to be superior to the 'proper' brands because they often contain less additives. Well or maybe that is a bit to broad of a statement, you need to check and compare of course. But I noticed this when reading through ingredient lists of mustard and mayo in some Edeka stores ad there def did seem to be a trend. I am a chef though and cook mostly from scratch, so I tend to evade prefab produce to begin with.

I always purchase the house brand as you call them or store brand as they are called here in the USA. Some stores here also offer a generic brand that is cheaper than the store brand products. For an example let’s say the name brand product costs $10. The store brand costs $7, and the generic brand costs $4. The only time I purchase a brand name product is when it’s on sale and I have a coupon for it.

It doesn't take a genius to know why House Brands are a lot cheaper, yet comparable to the BRANDED OPTIONS. It's the money they pay in advertising, brand recognition and higher pay on people working on these branded products. Most of the time, it's the SAME products, bought in bulk then repacked with same or even less employees without the high priced salary of workers and of course, ADVERTISEMENTS.

So interesting. Especially for house brand food - because for food, beyond the pricing differences, taste is probably the more important aspect for most people. For non-food items like soap, etc. don't think that's actually much difference, boils down to preference & how comfortable you are with a certain brand.
@PMNS1995

I agree, I buy house brand if the quality and price is good, but if the branded is a lot better and priced higher for a good reason then I will probably buy that. Sometimes I switch because I like the different taste On soap it depends on the smell and how strong chemicals you need for cleaning. We also have "house brands" in the Philippines, particularly in SM, Puregold and Robinsons the 3 biggest chain of supermarket/grocery here. It is true that most of the house brands are cheaper than those more popular or what we call "branded" items, however it is not all the time. In SM, they have this coconut cooking oil called SM Bonus coconut oil and the price of it is actually higher than some of the branded coconut cooking oil. It maybe beneficial to some consumers but I think this practice is killing some other brand names. Back in late 2000's or early 2010's, SM tried to convince Colgate Palmolive to be sold as SM Bonus products in SM supermarkets. But Colgate-Palmolive did not bite on the offer, hence, their products were temporarily banned in SM. Several months or I think even a year that you cannot see any products of Colgate in any SM stores. According to some news I heard from some of my marketing colleague that Colgate did not accept the offer because they do not want to lose the brand recognition for their products. So during that time whenever we buy toothpaste in SM its always close-up or some of their competitors. But everything is back to normal now.

toilet paper individually wrapped, bet its a niceway to combat our trash problem. As much as i like to save cost, Housebrands are a sure fire way to promote monopolistic greedy behavior within corporations, they hold all the cards when dealing with the actual small-medium manufacturers leaving no leeway in negotiating pricing and quality control. On the flip side, some of these manufactures do have some market exposure whereby it used to have none but some would have withdraw their products due to fierce price competitiveness and force to join the housebrands or wither out. In the long run, its sad to say you probably will one day see shelves mostly stocked up with that same product and choice is pretty much the thing of the past. Minor disruptions might stall supply chains with devastating effect leaving shelves empty far longer
@funela1234
@funela1234 2 жыл бұрын
I think individually wrapped toilet rolls make it easier to be packed into different quantities or sold individually. House brands are a good thing for competition because it means that branded goods have to improve their products rather than provide the baseline for consumers. Not all products can rely on brand alone in the long run as inflationary pressures push more consumers to house brands.

Singapore food agency actually routinely screens the nutrition of product with the declared information on the packaging, and the manufacturers will be in trouble if it deviates a lot. You can't lie about the nutrition as the product will be sent to third party lab to test and generate the nutrition information in form of certificate (NIP), and to register the product for sale the certificate is required.

I find that house brands can work very well. For example, I used Cascade dishwasher detergent and the dishes didn't come out as clean as when I use Finish powerball detergent. I've always saved tougher loads for Finish since those detergents are the most expensive but they work well. Lately, I tried Kirkland UltraShine and they work really well, probably as good as the Finish ones. So the take away is to always give house brands a chance. They can be great value. For drugs, I always get generics. I know they are the same as the branded ones.

I myself use Sam's club's own brand's organic products, but this show is quite shallow in its approach. I was hoping to see some real comparisons. if you're comparing eggs and rice you don't compare the protein content or carbohydrate content, that's pretty obvious it wont be so different. you need to compare the quality in terms of antibiotics, heavy metals, pollutants etc. the same goes for the dish wash liquid, of course both types will "clean the dishes" the real thing is wether it leaves any chemical residues that could be harmful for health.

When I was working on a retail department before...."some" of the house brands are well-known brands but they just put the name of the store in order for the price to go down. Not really sure how my previous company and that "main brand" come to an agreement but that main brand is also being sold on that same store. This is only an example so that it will be easier understand....for example your store name is "xyz" then this company have the "XYZ toothpaste"... little that they know that the xyz toothpaste was made by "Colgate" but branded as a house brand. So they have the xyz toothpaste and colgate toothpaste that is being sold in the store. That is only an example....I use toothpaste so that it will be easier to understand. I am not telling that all stores do this....but "SOME" stores do.

Hey CNA Insider, why not do a show on why inflation is so high. If you are at it, do tell your audience that inflation is always a monetary phenomenon.

@@runesapien John Oliver pandering to the Federal Reserve speaks volumes about the truthiness of the causes of inflation. Federal Reserve's actions in the past years are the main cause of inflation. Majority of the people are sold the supply side but not the demand side which is too much money chasing limited goods and services. Folks, your money are being debased under your noses. Time to wake up.
