I had the good fortune of working at the opera scene in Singapore from 2018 to 2023 (stopped 2 years during covid). The month stayed in Singapore for rehearsal, and it opened my eyes to all things Singaporean, friends, food, closer look to daily living. In many ways, Singapore is similar to my home, Hong Kong. Singaore will always be very dear in my heart ❤️ sending the Lion city my love from Hong Kong ❤️

I loved growing up in Singapore. It changed my life. I miss it to this day. It is sad to me how much heritage had to be sacrificed for progression. You would have to be a millionaire to live the type of life I did in the 70's and 80's. COF tax for driving, insane the true cost of owning a car or home . I would still move back if I had the opportunity. I love Singapore.

The 1970's, the decade of discos, long hair, drugs, flower power, hippies and bell-bottoms. A decade of the most draconian rule in Singapore but also the most exciting decade ever to be a Singaporean. Pioneer generation will definitely agree with this.
@satansfans4 жыл бұрын
Why do you call it was the decade of most Draconian rule?
@veekwok56114 жыл бұрын
@@satansfans Well, the first thing that came to my mind, when I wrote the above comment was of course "Operation Snip Snip", where it was an offence for males to keep long hair. At 1:18 of the video you can see the poster, "males with long hair will be attended last" which is so discriminatory. Long hair was defined by the authorities as hair-cut above collar-length, covering the ears or touching the eye-brows and the law was enacted strictly. It was common then where schools would not allow students into the premises until you have a "decent short hair-cut". Police would round up males with long hair-cut and were fined for flouting the law. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees and Kitaro were refused from performing here because they have long hair. Restriction on public gatherings were put in place in 1973. During 1970, sterilization and abortion were legalized to support the "Stop At Two" family planning campaign. Women who borne more than 2 children were penalized. Jay walking was made illegal and offenders were heavily fined. I don't know why but jukebox was banned, and oh yes it is illegal to possess PlayBoy magazines. During the 70's people were quite fearful of the Government.

Progress? Yes it's a richer country but at what cost? Communities had the heart ripped out of them when low rise dwellings were knocked down for soulless high rise - even though many of the above-shop homes could have been refurbished with modern utilities. It was a way of removing reminders of colonial times which mattered to the political class. The once beautiful coastline has been decimated along with much flora and fauna. No one talks about the appalling loss that land reclamation caused to the country's natural appearance. The cityscape could be any modern metropolis anywhere in the developed world. Singapore has wealth, prestige and comparatively low crime for the Far East. I'm sure it is a better place in many ways to live than when I was a small boy living in Changi in the mid sixties. But it will never, ever, be as wonderful.

Singapore has always had a very, very low crime rate. It's also one the list of one the best places to do business (and least corrupt). So many great things to say about this economic tiger, but I'm curious why the number of executions rose so steeply during the 1990's.
@x66214 жыл бұрын
The crime rate rose dramatically from 1989, when the last British soldiers (operating from the British New Zealand garrison) left Singapore, until the Asian financial crisis in 1998. Crime in Singapore reached a shocking peak in 1996, before dwindling down after the Asian financial crisis.
