Taylor Swift is not the first artist to be at the center of controversy over Ticketmaster and Live Nation’s domination of the live entertainment industry. In November when presale tickets for the pop star’s Eras Tour were plagued by disruptions and slow queues, chaos erupted and the general public sale was canceled. But Live Nation Entertainment, the consolidation of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, has been under fierce scrutiny for years and a similar uproar occurred surrounding the sale of Bruce Springsteen tickets just months prior. On Jan. 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing that explored whether Live Nation Entertainment is hurting consumers by stifling competition. In 2019, the Department of Justice alleged Live Nation Entertainment violated its consent decree, the condition of the two companies’ merger, and the concert giant settled with the government. A monopoly is not illegal in the United States. But abuse of that power can be. Here’s a close look at why Live Nation and Ticketmaster are facing renewed antitrust scrutiny.

Having visited the US, one of the things that was most surprising and frustrating was advertised prices in almost everything ended up not being the price you paid. Wherever I've visited in Europe, if a business displays a price they have to sell their item or service at that price. Any additional fees must have already been factored into the price

I went to the official travel website for Las Vegas to book a holiday. It said the price *included* all government taxes, and fees. However, when you went to the checkout, it added other fees... So, *all* taxes and fees, *doesn't* include all taxes and fees? I just went to a different website, that actually included all the fees, and it was cheaper.

I used to work in the ticketing industry for one of TM competitors. If fans actually knew what happens in the live events industry, they would not go anymore. It is so sickening what is actually happening. Basically, it is 100% pay to play and companies are bullied to take the money and shut up. Also the fees are total BS. Just know that when you buy a ticket, at least 40% of the price goes to TM or other companies associated with them. They are basically stealing.

Cannot stand the deception of the listed prices. The second time I saw Hamilton live I looked for whatever was cheapest - $69. Ended up paying $100 with all the fees. What people really really need to know is that Ticketmaster does this so Swift and other artists can get maximum profit out of their appearances. If Swift played more shows at the same venue, ticket prices would go down, but she obviously wants to work less and make more like every person does, and yet she could take a reputational hit if her concerts were seen as extremely expensive (esp. because she has politics that don't align with that). So she does a tour, Ticketmaster gouges everyone, and every one leaves hating Ticketmaster and not the singer

I worked for Ticketmaster back in the early 1990s. It was a total fiasco then. The fees were ridiculous but TM had a captive market. In the 30 years since, nothing has changed. It seems like competitors would have come along with a better package. I guess TM just knew how to do it best.

They do know how to do it best, and honestly, nobody was big enough to challenge it. It takes a lot of people to make change and this happens ALL the time many times throughout 30 years. Now that we have Bad Bunny, BTS, and of course Taylor Swift who to me are one of the biggest ever acts right now, this has now got the momentum and attention that it deserves. I hope they come to a solution for not only the artists and TM/LN, but more importantly the fans that make the wheel turn. This must be addressed. And I’m here to watch it go down ..

My friends and I bought tickets to a concert at the local state fairgrounds. The price per ticket was unknown until the purchase was completed, which came out to $75 per ticket when the total was divided 5 ways. The actual paper tickets were then mailed to me, with $25 printed right on front. Which means we paid triple the face value after “convenience fees” and other fees were applied, even though this was the only way to purchase them. When I called customer service to complain, they told me they could only refund the face value and that it would take 2 weeks.

The ones up front showed a range, between $45-55 per ticket. When you clicked on the seats you wanted to reserve, you were redirected to the 3rd party seller and given a disclaimer that the “actual” price may vary from what it listed, and that your final price after taxes & fees will be shown at checkout. I was buying 5 tickets, so I had to just pay the total and my friends sent me the money on Venmo. Usually you get an electronic ticket after that, with a QR code that you can transfer to your apple wallet, but I got an envelope in the mail instead. 5 paper tickets, $25 right on the ticket. No refunds.

There was no mention of Ticketmaster platforms basically legalizing ticket scalping on the secondary market. It is crazy how much more than face value you have to pay for sporting events etc. And Ticketmaster has managed to obliterate resellers. I used to buy off kijiji but someone decided that should be illegal now those tickets are on TM for even higher prices and extra fees…… WTF? They were worried about fraud in the secondary market so now Ticketmaster does it openly on their website and it’s legal?

Great point! Wish it was talked about more. When Ticketmaster merged with Live Nation they cut into the reseller market under the guise they wanted to "protect fans" from scalpers. Now, they are the scalpers! The queuing system and strategically-timed website crashes create enough of a buyer frenzy for Ticketmaster to resale tickets for THOUSANDS of dollars. It seems like they are stealing from the artists, the venues, and the fans while making double the profit on initial & re-sold tickets.

I think it's quite possible that Taylor Swift may have more power over Ticketmaster than the Federal Government. She did force TM to have a "second chance" ticket sale for verified fans who has been offered a pre-sale chance but failed because of glitches/competition to purchase tickets the first time around. I was one of those that got locked out the first time but I did manage to purchase a single ticket (I figured my odds were higher that way) in the second-chance sale which instead of being first-come first-serve was handled more like a lottery (or at least TM said so, who knows what went on behind the scenes). I think Ms Swift should band together with other major concert artists and a different ticketing company or perhaps start one of their own in a similar way to how Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and DW Griffith created United Artists. TM is nothing without these major artists so I think only they can have a serious effect on them.

Meaning to say, fans who were not able to enjoy her previous tours will now have the chance to experience them FOR THE PRICE OF ONE. Are their fees really rediculous. They manage tens of millions of customer accounts. They have an app they have to manage. They have created technology which have pretty much eliminated fake tickets as the tickets are now on your phones ticketmaster app and the barcode either rotates or you put the ticket in your apple/google wallet and they use NFC technology to scan the ticket off the wallet. It costs a lot of money to run that infastructure plus they need to make some sort of profit.

@@johnsamoilis6379 The issue is less so the fees at face value, and more that literally nobody can compete with them since LiveNation (their parent company) owns a lot of the major venues around the country. Having fees is understandable, the issue is nobody is allowed to compete in that regard, so Ticketmaster can set whatever fees they want and nobody can compete on price, which is awful for consumers. Ticketmaster should've never been allowed to merge with LiveNation in the first place.

The problem with the Springsteen tickets is the lack of multiple shows in his biggest markets, with the exception of NY/NJ. He's also not playing California apparently because he may be playing Desert Trip. So that meant the tickets would be harder to get. Plus, they went on sale in waves, with the first three shows being in Tampa, Atlanta, and Orlando. Easy for people to fly in for the show. Plus the Miami show is in a smaller venue. All of this drove up demand which gets thrown on top of whatever shenanigans are going on.

World Cup tickets are not has hard to come by as you may think. Not only that they are fairly distributed and sold using a Weighted Lottery System. Ticketmaster has experience selling tickets this way on behalf of the Mens US national soccer team for its high demand world qualifiers. Since ticket master has a ton of data on its customers and Taylor Swift fans, they could have conducted a weighted lottery with many data points. Positive data points would be (previous purchase of Taylor Swift Tickets and not transferring the tickets to another account and using the tickets, the distance to the venue, users can add in a login for taylor swifts fan club which can be verified, a PSL or season ticket holder in question to the venue can also be added by using a login which can be verified, previous purchase and use of Taylor Swift tickets on the TM provided resale market would be a positive data point as well, the price point and sections in which a person wants to buy a ticket would also be entered before going into the weighted lottery, the more sections and price points a fan selects for potential tickets the greater chance they will win the lottery). Negative data points would be (if an account was used to buy tickets and resell them or transfer them to another account, if the distance to the venue was hundreds/thousands of miles away or outside the nation of the venue) All those data points can be confirmed at put into a lottery with a score assigned to each potential buyer. The higher the score the better the chance of landing face value tickets which would be automatically purchased after the lottery takes place. Also if one buys tickets on TM secondary resale market their score would increase going forward. Those who sell tickets or transfers tickets on that marketplace would receive a lower score as they are more likely to be scalpers. This ensures fans have a fair way of getting tickets. The "Best" fans would have the best chance of getting face value Taylor Swift Tickets. Which for this current tour started a little over 100 plus fees.

I get that LN/TM are disgusting greedy bullies but here's where I'm a little confused: Why can't the artists& venues cut out abusive event promoters like LN/TM and make contracts directly between each other to sell tickets for concerts? It's not like Beyonce, Gaga, Swift etc and the venues don't have lawyers to help them workout contract terms. These days, all artists have to do is share the tour dates on their social media, radio stations, official artist websites etc to advertise their concerts and people will be jumping to purchase tickets. Then the venues can set up their own ticket purchasing platform with software, have the artist share the link to that or also sell from their box offices at the venue. Boom, the need for the greedy middleman erased. Would even give the opportunity for other businesses to arise if the venue doesn't want to handle other logistical stuff in-house like production materials (stages, props, sound systems, people to setup and take down all this stuff before/after events, etc) Instead it seems like LV/TM have gotten away with operating mafia style giving venues and artists an offer they can't refuse bc it's sell tickets thru them or don't put on a show. Ridiculous that merger was allowed to happen in the first place. I remember when $200 would buy you a seat in one of those swanky box suites, now $200 barely buys you a nosebleed seat.
