Lobbying is a huge industry in the U.S. In 2019, around 12,000 registered professionals helped clients spend over $3.5 billion, which seems to pay off. According to one study, for every dollar spent on lobbying and campaign contributions, a corporation can receive up to $760 from the government. Still, lobbying is often criticized and public perception of the practice is low. Opponents say that the industry isn’t adequately regulated, and that the ability to influence policy is in the favor of those with unlimited financial resources. Supporters say that without their in-depth expertise, lawmakers wouldn’t be able to do their job effectively and efficiently. Watch the video above to understand how lobbying works, why it exists and how it became a powerful tool for businesses.

@Gareth De Bruyn im not gonna speak about the correctness or the wrongness of what they did but, they did what the other 2 families i wont mention have been doing for a century. But my view on things is, South Africa needs a collaboration of public and private capital. China made it work, we can make it work as well. Caz nationalisation definately wont work, and considering our history, privatazation isnt the answer either. So, the two need to work together.

@Gareth De Bruyn Even though countries like Brasil & SA have a lot of corruption at least they occasionally do something about it. But nothing is being done in the US. Not even in '08, no one is being held accountable. One of the scariest things about our culture is that we have the resources to change, but we choose not to.

Pure semantics. Pay to Play is the MO for anyone in Politics, not the "Greater Good" a policy can affect. It's why we have political system of diminishing returns, the more Lobbying by the Fortune 1000 & their Associations, the less effective the governance We the People receive.

In 1976 Buckley v Valeo went to the supreme court and the court made it legal to the constitution which is where we are today. Corporate lobbying definitely has a influence cause our energy should've already been on solar, wind, nuclear and other renewable energy. There should be a great proportion of electric cars on the road. Fossil fuel, gas and oil companies should be heavily struggling or out businesses. People should be making a $15 wage or higher by now. Mandated Family paid leave, Medicare For All, sick paid leave should be here.

@@Comeback180 I took an Alternative Energy Systems course in my BSME undergrad, this topic was heavily related, but at the same time is a double edged sword. i.e.: the automobile industry has long existed as well as electric vehicles back in the early 1900s and yes oil became the main choice. So oil and such industries like coal, and often are thought of as dirty pollutants, but people sometimes forget that electricity has to be generated somehow through dirty means depending on POV (coal burning to run steam cycle turbines, hydro electric water pumping, nuclear with heavily toxic byproducts albeit one of the most efficient energy generators per mass volume). All these things in everyday life have a "process" to which they must go through for hi production, etc.. and often those old processes such as auto mfg, oil, plastics production etc.. have been refined so much over the decades that they're very efficient not to mention they have well established supply chains and abilities to produce demands. Whereas say how it's less polluting to the environment to produce a plastic bottle from scratch than to just recycle plastic and reform materials from it. The technologies are changing so fast nowadays that it's going to take some time for these "cleaner solutions" to actually become more efficient and feasible than older remedies. Same with cars, it's a cleaner, more efficient to produce a typical gas economical vehicle like a nissan versa, honda civic vs typical HEV/PHEVs like a prius, tesla, leafs etc, due to all these electrical components requiring heavy amounts of rare earth metals, specialty parts and manufacturing processes and supply chains that still need refinement. Same goes with solar, it's still a fairly inefficient process to be a holistic solution because it doesnt work as well as it should theoretically for the amount of energy input into production. Wind is geographically limited and not so feasible everywhere, because it still takes large amounts of metal and requires large amounts of windings etc for power generation and transmission. Big topic also "infastructure" issues... geothermal energy sources are only relatively viable options at such distances until they become inefficient and nonpractical. Even if say these were largely lobbied topics with a high public support, things would need their lifetimes to come to an equilibrium amongst everything else, until one outdoes the other and becomes obsolete.

Lobbying is a excuse to keep power, whereas the government outstepping it´s boundaries is more often than not a power grab disguised as "fair regulation". @S C 'Not all propositions by lobbyists are bad' is not a great defense. That's like saying allowing doctors to be bribed by drug companies isn't a bad idea, because occasionally they would prescribe medicine that worked. Lobbyists don't have a vested interest in crafting good policy - they have a vested interest in achieving corporate goals. _Sometimes_ that might result in a decent proposition, but often it will not, when one of the prime functions of government is to protect individuals from exploitation and gross harm. - Even if you hate politicians - lobbyists (especially corporate ones) don't help. There are public policy experts who aren't getting paid by big business in almost any field you care to name - incorporate _them_ into policy discussions!
@merrymachiavelli2041
@merrymachiavelli2041 4 жыл бұрын
@S C You misunderstood. My point wasn't that lobbying is bribery, it's that in both situations you are dealing with individuals with conflicts of interests who might, on occasion, end up doing a 'good thing' just because it happens to coincide with their agenda. - The other example I was going to use (that doesn't work quite as well, because it doesn't hit on the conflict of interest element) was having 5-year olds giving out medical advice - occasionally, they'll tell you to eat your veggies, which is decent advice. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to have 5 year old doctors.

@S C Made in USA food is often unsellable in the EU due to lacking comparable food safety standards and the US also prohibits the use of only a fraction of chemicals in consumer products (shampoo, deodorant) compared to the EU, in fact, some chemicals that are banned in China are allowed to be sold in the US, so Chinese sells to Yankees some stuff that is unsellable even in the smoggy garbage bin of industrial waste country like China. And don't get me started on the state of gun control debate in the US... Why you think the US is where it is??? If you think that paid lobbying does not have power over law creation you can as well believe that you have the same chance to win a law dispute in front of a judge with your by law freely given lawyer as a rich guy armed with a fleet of expensive lawyers "lobbying" for his rights... The trouble is not that corporations should not have their own voice, trouble is that opposition of corporations like the organized neighborhood that does not want his area polluted by some factory posing health hazards for the local community due to factory actively cutting down on waste disposal budget, for example, does not have anywhere to an equal chance to lobby against a corporation with much more resources to lobby or directly incentivize politicians to see only corporation's point of view in order to keep things the same way at the expense of average people. You can check for example Heartland Insitute a professional lobbying group for among other things denying/doubting human-made negative effects of climate change for the industry sake, they even got own teenage anti-Greta for creating doubt in public, just watch this video made by pro shill group, its pure gold and tell you all you need to know about what is wrong with paid lobbying: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6LIm4upbL2aqbc

@ar4203
@ar4203 2 жыл бұрын
Well that doesn't make sense though, there are industries outside of goverment, actually every industry outside of goverment, who know more about their industry & interests than the government who is legislating on them- doctors know more about how a certain policy would affect their ability to do their jobs & positively or negatively impact public health & so forth than do federal state& local government departments, doctors in coties might have differnt perspectives from doctors in rural areas, you cant just assume that the government knows everything- THEY DONT, but that is the point of the right to petition the government/ special interst groups& lobbying etc, there are legitimate reasons that groups would want their voices& opinions to be heard when it comes to matters that concern them/ congress passing laws that effect them, but the problem is that the biggest corporations who have the most $& influence & the revolving door etc means that the voices of a small number overpower all else. There is a huge problem with the dark money & big money/ Corp money on politics- THATS the problem. Not lobbying in and of itself. As they said it's the big money that drowning the voices of everyone else. It's not the voices having a voice(I e the ability to lobby).

I think the framers of the constitution understood that even though lobbying may be like corruption, there's no real way to stop the rich and powerful from trying to influence elected officials. If you ban lobbying, it'll just go under the table even more. In other countries where lobbying is illegal, do you think there's no corruption? I think the idea here is to not ban something that cannot be stopped, rather regulate and tame it as much as possible.

In surgery, we have "lobbyists" too. They are sales reps/vendors. They come into our ORs and give us all the up to date information and specifications about THEIR product. They would never talk to us about another product, even if it were cheaper or objectively better. Does the best product get selected? No. The most outgoing, friendly and honestly prettiest (let's face it, most of us surgeons are middle aged white men) vendors get invited back to bring their products. They host rep dinners for our journal clubs at high end restaurants and clubs where we spend 20 minutes discussing a surgical paper and hours getting stuffed and drinking wine. I can imagine congressional lobbyist ranks are split between eye candy and soothsayers.

My big issue with politics is that it’s based on the notion that if you can convince someone of something, you win. In a really forward-thinking data-driven system of leadership, it would quickly become apparent that lobbying is counterproductive. Think about it: you’ve got political science majors courting politicians and pulling the strings that will affect the future of American healthcare, technology innovation on the world stage, our national response to climate change, energy, physical and digital infrastructure, education, the debt crisis, etc. These are not the people that ought to be arguing for these things, one way or another. I’d rather a body of relevant engineers, for example, devise the nations energy strategy going forward, than a bunch of politicians and lobbyists that don’t really know what they’re talking about. But that doesn’t sound very democratic, because it’s not, so it gets shot down, and we continue to let the lobbyists run around playing “God meets Einstein”. This is the 21st century, and with all the data our societies are generating, surely we know better. We can do better.

i dont think the problem is the lobbying, i think its the fact that lobbyists, mostly corporate, play a big part in fundraising. As many corporate lobbyists there are, there are also a lot of legit lobbying groups out there who advocate for many people's interests - like the AARP - beyond monetary greed. The reason why coporate lobbyists have become so prominent is due to fundraising, espeically after Citizens United.

Lobbying was first done in ancient China during the Qing dynasty. Look at how that turned out, they ended up with a people’s revolution and now into a communist society. Don’t destroy what you have with this legal bribery. Learn from China’s 3000 years of lobbying system.

I guess it's a good point that lobbying is needed to steer the politicians who don't really know about the things they are deciding on but wouldn't it be better we had people who knew about things rather than celebrities making the decisions?

Well I mean how can you be expected to know about everything? This is sorta why nobody calls themselves (formally) an expert in science, not anything specific, just science. There is no way one person can learn everything about science, which is why they specialize into things like expert on radiology, or expert in astrophysics. Arguably, politics is an even more vast field than science in that it has to do with the actions of people, who do and say a lot of things unpredictably all the time. Therefore, someone needs to be able to tell a politician what, specifically, is important because these politicians will be passing legislation that could potentially change the lives of millions of people, and if they are a little rusty or ill-informed in their knowledge of, I don't know, how the advancements in razors are affecting the barber industry, then that can end in a *massive* screw-up. Anyway, I hope I was able to tell you why it's impractical for one person to know everything about everything. After all, the biggest thing most politicians care about is their image.

They're skipping the lobbying part now and only selecting corporately owned politicians for all political parties. There are no good options. Just bad and worse.

Lobbying, or to be more precise, the Right to Petition, is really important. In Brazil, the citizens proposed a law that prohibits politicians with a second level conviction (1) to run for public office. The law passed because of a huge popular support at a time when congress was demoralized by corruption scandals. The problem starts when you can make a petition and offer a campaign contribution. In Brazil we are trying to outlaw campaign contributions and make campaigns 100% publicly funded. We had a huge step in that direction when contribution from corporations was outlawed. (1) In Brazil a convicted person has 3 levels of the Justice System for recourse and jury trials are only for crimes against life. The first level is a single judge, the 2nd is a collegiate (3 judges) and the current debate is around imprisonment after the 2nd level. The 3rd is a larger collegiate of senior judges and the 4th is the Supreme Justice Court (this is not a constitutional court - in Brazil that is the Supreme Federal Court). Most countries without universal jury trial - like in Europe - have only 3 levels with the 3rd having a restricted access (the judges have to accept the appeal). The 4 levels in Brazil create a situation where the poor go to jail right after the first level and the very rich never go to jail because the can delay the 4th level almost for as long as they need. Recently, Federal Judges and Prosecutors managed to jail important people convicted in the 2nd leve for corruption. The problem is that our constitution explicitly says "people will only be jail after all recourse have been used". The Supreme Court developed an argument that this could be understood as the 2nd level since this is the last level that evidence can be disputed ... but then some important people started to be jailed and one Judge had a sudden change of mind and voted against it. Wanna know the funny thing? This was to protect a left wing (so they claim to be) party and it's most popular leader, former president Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva. BTW, they even tried to overthrow the law I talked about in the first paragraph so Lula could run for president in 2018. Well ... populists will never call their party the Brazilian Populist Party, right? I really hope the US manages to remove private money from campaigns - like Biden said: "What makes us (the US) powerful is not the example of our power but the power of our example". You are the town on the top of the hill weather you like it or not so, please, own it!

THIS is why I am not a republican or democratic. The ONLY difference between the two political parties is which corporations and industries end up profiting from their policies they administer. It's sad that most don't realize this.. they haven't been for WE THE PEOPLE for a long time! I'm 23 years old and it's sad that I'm a rare breed that thinks for themselves..

You can see some people are in denial that they could be a detriment to our democracy and others acknowledge that the system isn't perfect but that they really believe in what they're doing. However, so long as it takes is a 15k donation to get to speak to a senator then average person can't afford their time. In that way whether it's protected or not by the Constitution its in clear need of reform or more stringent oversight. Tldr - Lobbying makes sense in theory but in modern times it causes more distortion than anything else.

I don’t think lobbying is all that bad as long as it’s done the right a legal way. Wanting to support a politician and fundraise for one that will vote the way you like isn’t a bad thing.

People with power and money just make whatever rules they want amongst each other to get and make more power and money... For example with the banks and mortgages... why are they compounded interest? Can I get paid compounded as well? Why are there collateral mortgages now, that penalize you for shopping around even when your term/contract is over?
