Las Vegas’ evolution is ever apparent as it gears up for Super Bowl 58. What was once considered a sports pariah is now hosting the biggest U.S. sporting event of the year, and the event comes less than three months after the city held a Grand Prix Formula One race. That’s not all - Las Vegas now boasts two new entertainment facilities, the Sphere and Allegiant Stadium, adding new offerings like A-list performers.
The total number of visitors climbed to 40.8 million in 2023. Beyond all the fun and gambling, the region has also become popular with relocating businesses and homebuyers. However, there are some significant risks with being a desert city that could hinder Las Vegas’ growth as the planet warms. CNBC traveled to Vegas and met with locals and experts to learn more about Sin City’s explosive growth.

How long do you think the workers would have a job if they paid a “living wage “ ? These restaurants are not making a fortune. I know 2 owners who work 100 hours a week with their wives just to keep the cooks and waitresses employed. I don’t think the children will do that

I lived in Las Vegas for 7 Years! From 2012 to 2019 and the high turnover rate, unemployment, job layoffs etc. hurt the locals. The locals can barley afford to go on the strip for leisure and fun. Clark county does not invest in the locals or the schools, its really sad. Off the strip life living in Las Vegas is really like a small town where everyone knows everyone. Tons of single moms who were ex cocktail waitresses, bottle girls or show performers. Tons of Gambling addicts, ex street walker lizard lot workers, drug addicts, alcoholics etc. you name it. Vegas is not for the weak its a tough city and I enjoyed living in Las Vegas. It has now embarked on a complete corporate takeover where it is not that affordable for the average citizen. I remember back in the 90s and early 2000's, Clubs were free, drinks were free, 2 for 1 buffets. Buffets for 10 bucks, drinks for 2 bucks. clubs were 20 bucks max. Vegas used to be super fun, but around 2015ish it really started to get corporate and bouge. Vegas will be for the rich elites soon. I remember when you could park for free in any parking garage and just explore the strip, it was super fun. Now you have to pay extra resort fees, pay for parking at the casinos when it was once free, but hey life changes and nothing ever stays the same. I get it, sports, gambling, rigging games etc. All about money over people. Profits over people.

It is funny to hear some people advocate for low or no taxes at all, but afterwards state that the lack of Government support in some areas (water or energy supply, child care, school, transport, etc...) is limiting the growth capacity of the city. To be clear: I am not saying that high taxes equals high quality public services! It does not work this way. The main thing is: taxes have to increase as the city expands, and more services are demanded by that increase. Hence, with time, Las Vegas - and its cities - will have to increase taxes.

I loved living in Summerlin from 2006-13. All the State Parks, National Parks, and public hiking trails within a 5 hour drive was a huge plus. Las Vegas is all about resort fees, you have to pay to park at some malls, food is very expensive, good medical is hard to find and education is at its worse. The stadium has been operating for the past two years what difference did it make? Why would Super Bowl do anything different if the stadium capacity is the same? Las Vegas trying to over hype an event that happens every year. Their team isn’t even playing the game should have been in San Francisco. Worst they think people are going to over pay for for something you can see on tv? To all the suckers going it’s ok it’s your money. The only thing is that they over charge for everything lol but it’s not going to get the hole nation to fly over to Las Vegas especially with the economy killing people’s pockets. Las Vegas is about to find out what state of mind the country is in. Lol ~ football tickes were 250 dollars not sure why they think everyone is dying to pay 9,000 dollar tickets, when pigs fly.

This will forever be a great vacation destination, but I don’t think it’s wise to start a family here. Crime is getting worse each month, there’s not enough water, traffic is awful, and the summers are getting hotter. Worst of all, schools are not getting any funding. When economic hardship hits the country, Vegas gets its worst because it’s super reliant on tourism.

I have been living in Las Vegas since 2015. These are the pros and cons IMO Pros are - Great for starting and building a business, low taxes and unlimited amount of great shows, restaurants etc. Another one is great family communities such as Henderson and Summerlin. Cons are - Real estate prices have gone up a lot and likely will continue to as we are starting to run out of land due to Mountain ranges surrounding the entire city. Traffic is getting worse each year it seems. Are things perfect in Vegas? No. Are they way better than most places. Absolutely.

The Brightline high-speed rail project is said to be creating 10,000 jobs, so that’s a big boost. Also, the lithium mining boom for electric vehicle & battery needs is huge for Nevada as a whole. ‘the new oil’, and Nevada some of the largest fields of it on the planet. Nevada’s newfound status as the second presidential primary state on the Democrats’ calendar in 2028 should be an interesting wrinkle, too. (It’ll be South Carolina-Nevada instead of Iowa-New Hampshire). I find that a compelling draw, esp since that Brightline rail is targeting a 2028 completion - just in time for the Olympics in Los Angeles. There’s planned to be World Cup matches in Los Angeles or even in Las Vegas itself (if the shaky LA stadium plan fails) in 2026, too. Very interesting time to be in the state.

The real key is getting a higher percentage of Metro Vegas economy away from tourism/leisure. Technology and business services can possibly fill some of that void due to proximity to California and its airport having direct flights all over the world. Also look at what Reno has done in attracting manufacturing and try to gain something similar near Vegas

Modern Las Vegas ain't your parents nor grandparent's Las Vegas. I went to school in Vegas in the 90's and it was mainly an adult city with nothing for to do for those under 21...And ironically it was cheaper when it was for adults only. $3 all you can eat buffets was fire Now Vegas is more family friendly and you even see children on the strip and in casinos (not gambling, of course). Long gone when UNLV and Boxing was the only game in town.

These people in Vegas try to fool you, they are a bust and boom, they make their money by stealing all the the dead people’s property. Instead of finding their families. Having said that these home are not worth buying. Just like they’re over inflated stadium tickets ~ I’ll watch the game at home ~ order a couple pizzas ~ go to bed and wake up with a bank account. All these people will be crying once they get home because all their money will be gone. It’s clear Las Vegas trips are of no value anymore everything is seriously overpriced and we the working man don’t get paid nowhere near the amount they charge even for a taxi ride let alone resort fees and room fees. I’ll watch from home 😎

Schools are poorly funded in Las Vegas, because it's easier to manage a poorly educated public. This way restaurant owners (like the guy that came on here) can say that his cook works two jobs because of demand and not because he doesn't pay him well.

90% of water in lake mead goes to California for subsidized irrigation in the Central Valley. Vegas Nets zero water consumption and recycles it all. Humans barely need any water it’s the crops that do.

Nevada has a reasonable cost of living and no state income tax. There are plenty of things to do in Las Vegas. Many people hate rain and snow. I agree that the water situation is a big risk.
@anthonymartinez4307

These people are blind to see why the lake is drying. They are operating more lithium mines than any state. They use up all the under ground water and worse turn the ground toxic. California gave them more water to hold but it’s only for 3, years and even then it’s drying up. All because lithium, and their population has grown. It’s not 2. Million remember they name everything a different name for example green valley ~ Henderson, north Vegas they are all the same city so they count only paradise as being a city which is the strip area. Regardless of how they recycle they waste more water that can’t be recycled. They pulled all the strings to twist and manipulate everything in order to steal the water, but nature does what it wants and the day of reckoning is coming.

Nevada is the 6th fastest growing state economy - growing pains expected. I've invested in Vegas, so I see the rise in business & real estate as a good thing. Not overly concerned about crime and water yet. For Vegas, tourists still rule the revenue streams and they'll go elsewhere if they believe it's unsafe to visit. City officials know this. As for water, there's just too much money on the line. Vegas stakeholders got The Money and The Power - they'll find a workable solution.

Vegas was created as a Adult Playground for adults to go gamble, party and "do their deeds" for the weekend and then leave. Hint "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" It wasn't designed to be a big city for sports, children, metro rails, etc. So now after all these years they trying to make it a big city for families and businesses...Vegas ain't designed for that. They would have to literally rebuild the city from scratch for all that

I moved here in 2006 as a kid. I always tell people that its a fun city, with plenty to do if u got the time and cash. But my main issue with this city is the people. The people here are some of the selfish, rudest, and fakest people I've ever met. No one knows their neighbors, a lot of ppl trying to scam u or make a quick buck by throwing u under the bus the first chance they get, etc. Also no one seems to think about our summers.
