As the EV industry ramps up, it could be hindered by a global shortage of nickel, a key component in most lithium-ion batteries. Tesla recently signed a deal to source nickel from a proposed mine in Minnesota, though mining raises a variety of environmental concerns that EV automakers must grapple with if they want to source battery minerals responsibly. Many also hope that battery recycling technology will scale up quickly enough to make a dent in the problem.

Indonesia's nickel trade has been discriminated against for a long time, before we exported nickel worth 1'5 billion USD before it was deducted and the price jumped to 20'8 billion USD after the smelter was built and even then those who import from Indonesia still benefit a lot because it can still be processed there and the price will also increase. soared bigger than 20'8 billion USD and there are still many raw goods that we export very cheaply and then process them and the prices become extraordinarily expensive and we are like destroying nature in Indonesia to make other countries' nature green, this is really very very evil discrimination.

Now Indonesia has flooded the market and caused the nickel price to drop so much that the Australian miners are stopping production and putting all their mines into care and maintenance.

@Brendan Geormer Hate to break it to you shortages might get so bad that there might even be a shortage of shortages. In a July 2021 Financial Times article Bank of America's Research Predictive Analytics team, led by its head of research - director Thomas Thornton, thought there might eventually be "a shortage of shortages". (i'd link the article but then it'd get flagged as spam)

It annoys me when people put a lot of resistance to mining things in the country instead of importing, either arguments about contamination and destroying the landscape. Not because they're invalid arguments, but because that means we are ok having someone else destroy their land for our sake, but it's a problem when we talk about doing it here instead.

Lol…… I actually argue with them, have you seen nickel mining in Russia!? It’s possibly the dirtiest industry in earth aside from the Canadian tar sand. The saddest town on earth is in Russia where they produce nickel.

Yep and your the problem with climate change and global supply shortages Amazon said it right the world needs to be transformed into a themepark while manufacturing is taken to space let me ask you something how many astroids are between here and mars alone that we pass by every year just there alone how about on our moon the magnitudes of resource veins and how much large scale mining like your saying could do you dont want the job out of the way then it be one thing if you built things to be recycled vs thrown away we give this job to amazon not you because now we can demand this from them and help achieve it by taking a proactive approach in the design of amazon and then maybe giving it to you or our state keeps it sense yours clearly cant see outside its box

70% of nickel is used in stainless steel. Batteries have been a growing use, but mostly for phones. Automobiles will primarily use LFP batteries.

What about need for Nickel in Solid State Batteries ? Many believe by 2025 these will begin to be introduced into the Market. Also, I suggest we even take drastic measures, recycle Nickleback !

Why the US is running out of everything fron money to people, metals, in rubber and sand? Russian metals are deeply rooted in the US market. The US has already banned Russian oil and gas, but nickel and palladium have been noticeably left off the blacklist. Both are key components for America’s green revolution, which has some wondering if they’re simply too vital to sanction. The US is also facing an aging population, falling birth rate and economic recession caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. These issues will have huge implications on the size of the workforce and the consumer base. US government could run out of money soon- The US Treasury Secretary What country has spent 40% of the combined military budgets of the world, but their Pentagon still indicate to Congress they need to increase the military budget by $7 billion and send their troops to the Pacific to 'encircle' China. Isn't “Cold War and zero-sum mentality” that leads to obsessive military superiority?

Copper, silver, and palladium will likely crop up too. Additionally if the price disparity between the face value and metal value of US nickel and penny coins gets too high no amount of legal tender laws will stop people from hoarding/melting them down.

Tesla has long term contracts with suppliers. Half of their cars also do not use any Nickel because they use a iron cathode. This is OEMs biggest Problem though

The long term contracts do not matter , if nickel price is $100K, $200k per ton , then Tesla will have to sell the cars for so much money that nobody will buy them. , its not a contract issue, its a supply issue, Tesla isnt the only company that will need nickel , 28 automakers, motrocyle makers, stainless steel producers all need nickel and stainless steel prices have quaddrippled in the last year alone.

@@cashcow4383 tesla locked in alot of its prices a while Back. This price Explosion will affect them the least of all the auto manufacturers. They are also the company that orders the most amounts and has best horizontal integration among their competitors. Who would you sell your supply to? Tesla, the trillion dollar company, making millions of cars, growing like crazy, super high demand in their product. Or the OEM/start up that might not even be around once their contract is over?

Not a single mention of other battery types like LFP that are already being used in EVs. We might just see one of the developers of those make significant advances which narrow the gap between them and best of class N* batteries, and the problem will reduce on it's own... My gut tells me someone is going to use some nano technology in a clever way to reduce some of the volumes needed and at the same time improve their performance in energy density realm... Then again, so much battery research going on all over the place, could see an entirely different mixture of chemistries come to the fore and Ni might not even be involved in them. Recycling is a good thing anyway, make the pipeline from user to those plants simple to use and it should address some of near-term demand.

Depends what you mean by long range. Storage, and 300-350 range cars can be accomplished with iron But a 500 long range cyber truck will likely need nickel.

A relatively important but ultimately short term problem. Sodium (salt) Ion batteries coming out on the market late this year that don't use Lithium or Nickel. Already 10 times cheaper and 1000 times cleaner to produce. 5 yrs till they're the dominant EV battery. Lithium and Nickel will only be used in phone batteries and similar products.

Sodium batteries are perfect for electrical grid load balancing, not EVs, because they don't have enough energy density but are relatively cheap. Solid State Lithium Phosphate and Lithium Sulfur are the two upcoming battery chemistries that both don't require nickel and offer comparable and better energy density, respectively. Solid state lithium is currently headed to production with lithium sulfur close behind as breakthroughs in dendrite reduction using glucose have made them viable for long-term use.

@@gljames24 CATL have already achieved 160wh/kg with their sodium/prussian blue variant batteries. They will have their 2nd gen out later this year. EV vehicle packs will probably be hybrid of sodium and nickel based batteries until the sodium / prussian blue variety achieves or passes power parity/density.

Karora Resources has recently discovered a new high grade nickel ore trough located next to their current mine infrastructure. BHP, located a few kilometers away, already has facilities there to process this ore scheduled to start arriving next year.

Battery technology is quickly adjusting to the shortage of nickel and cobalt. New battery chemistries are focusing on Lithium-Iron-Phosphate, no nickel or cobalt needed. Tesla standard range vehicles are now using this new chemistry. Beyond that CATL is working on sodium salt based batteries rather than lithium. It's a couple years out but coming. These are early days.

Exactly, this is a very one sided and not very well researched article. CATL have achieved 160wh/kg already and will have their 2nd gen batteries out later this year. EV vehicle packs will probably be hybrid of sodium and nickel based batteries until the sodium / prussian blue variety achieves or passes power parity. Exciting times for renewables and lower and cleaner production costs.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) is not a new chemistry. It is safer (250°C before ignition vs 150°C for Lithium Cobalt - the more common Lithium Ion chemistry), but it’s energy density and charge voltage are significantly lower than other Lithium Ion chemistries.

Check out Queensland Pacific metals on the Australian stock exchange. Can turn laterite ore into battery grade nickel similar to hpal plants but carbon negative, no tailings dam, clean and green and fits esg criteria with LG Chem and POSCO as stake holders.

@@A.bankss No, actually they shouldn't exist when you really take the time to think about it, and if we're being honest with each other we know that not even half of that nearly 8 billion has access to these resources to even consume them. The issue isn't a lack of resources the issue is the lack of proper and effecient allocation of these resources. Why is the continent of Asia and Africa Europe and the United States mineral pit while the natives in those regions don't see any material benefit from the labor and shipping of those resources to wealthier countries. You didn't do much with your response here pal. Nearly 8 billion people and more than half live on pennies a day. A third experiences food insecurity, water issues, but yes all 8 billion of these people have complete access to all the resources and use them equally. Oh my bad that's not the world we live in you bufoon.

I don't like the framing of mining vs recycling. We need both. One thing to consider is that with demand for nickel growing new techniques will be found that find new deposits and new ways to refine the low quality nickel to be less energy intensive etc. We are only really scratching the surface here.

At current consumption levels, we will run out of known phosphorus reserves in around 80 years, according to MIT. The industry agrees with this. Most phosphate mined in the US comes from a mine in Aurora, NC, although there are other mines in the western US. The vast majority of phoshates are used in fertilizers.

Tesla has already mentioned adding manganese to reduce nickel demand. As the demand for batteries increase different chemistries for different applications will find their way to market.

there are abundance nickel reserve in indonesia, but tesla refuse to invest in nickel industry because of environmental sake. sooner or later korean or chinese EV maker will replace tesla as first EV maker in the world. because they already build nickel ecosystem (from mining, semelter, baterry and vehicle) in indonesia.

Tesla is only #1 in the USA with a poorly developed (for now) EV market. They are getting crushed in China and Europe because the are a luxury brand and dont offer cheaper options. so i agree, just that Tesla isnt close to being #1 in those markets already.

The world absolutely sucks at recycling basically everything. Almost everything can be recycled or reused, the main draw back for some is that it can be cheaper to use new virgin materials such as plastic, and there is basically ZERO education and policy for recycling Especially in the US. What about the heat pollution which is causing global warming? Recycling plastic costs 1000x more energy rather then making new plastics, that's the real problem here. Plastic is a big problem but it isn't a big deal right now because the real problem is the heat pollution. And the same goes towards recycling anything, it will always cost more to recycle then to produce.

I moved from the south to the north east to take care of my grandmother. When my engine in my 96 Toyota corolla manual crapped out. I just did a engine and transmission swap from a 2010 Toyota corolla manual. I'm a huge supporter of making everything modular so you can swap internal components very easily. You can extend the life of really anything if your design it that. Companies don't want you to fix what you already got. They want you to buy a new one and just throw it out. And the amount of plastic that is thrown out is disgusting. There are technologies that can scan and separate every kind of plastic that is manufactured. We do need to recycle and thing of a thing we buy as an investment. My dad owned a automotive repair garage when he was still working. When he started, you bought a high-end car jack and just rebuilt the piston and pump chambers about every 10 years. Now car Jack's are so cheap they get thrown away and buy new ones. It's a change of mind set and tax incentives to make things modular.

You also can't compare recycling all Anything as the same because there are some nay factors that go into making And recycling products. Such as what type of material is it, how far did it travel, what mode of transportation did it travel buy, what is the new product going to be and how long is it I tended to last, what sources of energy is being used processing the material, can the material/product be recycled again, etc. Have you ever even seen a garage dump? Do you even know how many billions of dollars the EPA spends on cleaning up old dumps and super fund sites that are polluting the air and water? Do you have any idea the long term contracts and securities it takes to get and maintain new supplies of raw materials from other countries around the world? DON'T spread BS information on the internet¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lithium is actually a pretty small portion by volume of this type of battery - they have mix names like NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) - those callouts are for the Cathode material, and the Anode is graphite (generally). when you charge one, electrons flow from one to the other and when you use the power (discharge) it flows the opposite direction. The mix of materials affects how much charge it can hold... Nickle lets you get more into less space essentially... Some Li batteries don't use Ni at all - like LFP - they're lithium iron phosphate in nature...

Tesla is using predominantly LFP battery chemistry. Elon’s nickel plea and email referenced here are a year old. Tesla changed direction. Its actually GM who has the biggest problem with nickel supplies. Its all readily available information but as usual this reporting is inaccurate with regard to Tesla.

It would be interesting to see if the LiS (lithium sulfur) battery can be both perfected and mass produced. This is kind of the holy grail of next gen battery tech if it can be achieved in a way that makes sense for EVs. There are some indicators that we may already be at the dawn of this entering into EV use through recent advancements and innovative design. No shortage of Sulfur out there. This may lead to a bifurcation where LFP batteries get used for stationary storage and LiS batteries get used for transport applications. I could easily see LiS in cars, trains, planes, and boats. A practical durable chemistry may proof to be 2x to 3x as energy dense as the Lithium-ion batteries used in Tesla cars today. That would be enough to fly a regional airliner, allow a cargo ship to cross an ocean without being overburdened with battery weight, or allow a battery electric train locomotive run a full work shift at full power. Granted LFP batteries are already finding their way into battery electric locomotives and it seems to be working out as train locomotives can be setup to carry a whole lot of batteries mass wise. There have also been a demonstration of a dual battery modified Tesla Model S using was is suspected to be an LiS battery for is 600 mile "range extender" second battery pack in addition to a 150 mile Lithium-ion battery. Even if the battery market bifurcates this way and Lithium Nickel Cobalt batteries go into a decline, Elon Musk still needs the nickel for his stainless steal Starship rockets, which he wants to make a lot of.

So, it will be insanely expensive to start the mine, keeping the water clean, and storage of co2. Yeah, I've never heard of a mining company that would do all this unlessforced. Unless they are monitored strictly they will screw over everyone due to the scarcity of the product on the market. Greed and lack of suppliers gives the mining company all the power to do whatever they want.

The recyclability of EV batteries is driving mining company/bank financing loan writer's reluctance to make new mines. Once the global car and light truck fleet is mostly EVs, demand for nickel and other raw materials for EV batteries will drop off sharply, as new batteries will be made from raw materials recycled from old batteries. The huge costs and many years of effort to bring a new mine into production plus the short period of time there will be demand for the nickel from the new mines is why Tesla is willing to write big checks to get the mines to happen.

CNBS fud at work. Tesla has long term agreements in place that predate this spike in nickel price. The ev competition in North America is just starting to negotiate supply. They might have a tough time. And then there’s the LFP batteries that Tesla uses more and more. No nickel no cobalt no problem.

My 2011 pickup truck has almost no nickel, less than 2 pounds of copper and zero lithium in it. My truck is more environmentally friendly than your Tesla! Oh, and your Tesla probably runs on electricity from a coal fired power plant.

Nickel is not necessary for lithium batteries. Yes, battery would have lower capacity if other chemistry is used. but that is what we need. But there is better battery closing to production! Solid electrolyte lithium metal/sulphur battery. This battery formulation uses solid electrolyte, lithium metal anode and lithium polysulfide anode. Experimental batteries already reached 1000 charging cycles common for other battery chemistries used for cars. Capacity is 2-4 times as high as for traditional nickel containing lithium ion batteries!

It sounds more to me like an environmental scientist believes that modern technology can make mining more environmentally friendly, and will attempt to convince people of her belief. Whether that will happen, no one knows yet. Wait until the report and think on it for yourself. I have met many scientists who also deeply care about sustainability, so it is not hard for me to believe that there can be a genuine effort to minimize the environmental impact of this mine. I'm not sure how this project will affect the environment, no one is. But I would say that it is YOU who has made up their mind here, I mean haven't you? Regardless of the study's conclusion, you will sing a little tune about corruption and be convinced (just as you are now) that no sustainable solution can be found for this nickel mine. Yet you come here and talk about confirmation bias. It's hilarious.

The grid only has problems during peak demand. 07:00-10:00 & 16:00-21:00 EV’s charge at night so there is no problem for many years, think 2040-50.

which is why you encourage home solar - not that it has to add power back to the grid, it can just free up what is ON the grid for other uses during daylight hours. If the need were there you could easily add 25 % power availability within a 5 year period just using efficiency reviews of it's use, upgrade motors in plants and fix the wonky HVAC systems etc... it's totally doable... and who says everyone has to have an EV ??? If the US got to 35% EVs in the next 10 years in the rolling fleet, it would totally upset the crude refining industry before the power generation industry...
