I think the binge format has something to do with that. People watch in different rhythms, hard to find someone who is in the same episode as you. If you wait too much, there’s already something else to watch. And you have to choose between watching something your friends have already watched or save it for later and watch the new thing. This way shows don’t have time to build momentum.

Agree! Netflix only need to use a portion of its $17 billion annual content budget to produce big-budget movies or tv series to keep its subscribers. Assuming a budget of $100 to $200 million each, Netflix can easily produce one big-budget production every month. The remaining money can be used to buy third-parties content and mass-produce the other nonsense.

Netflix has continuously raised prices while simultaneously losing content, shifting away from the binge model, (one of the defining differences over cable,) and infamously cancelling new IPs with insane speed and frequency. Of course they're losing subs! Streaming being binge-able, and consolidated into 1 or 2 sources for an affordable price was the main thing getting ppl to stop pirating. Now companies are showing too much greed and have fractured the streaming landscape and charging silly amounts, (and thinking it acceptable to constantly raise prices). Who can afford to actually subscribe to all of these? So congrats, instead of having everyone subscribed to 1 or 2 and sharing the profits every month, ..now you just get someone subbed for a couple months, then cancel and switch to another, and cycle through as they watch things, ..or they just password share or pirate. Focus on customers and profits will follow. Focus on profit and customers will leave.
@ZoneSkye
@ZoneSkye 2 жыл бұрын
I will say for the decision of whether or not to use the binge model, it depends on how the title in question might be released elsewhere. Anime fans in the US use the term “Netflix jail” for exclusive titles that are being aired week-to-week on TV in Japan or even on Netflix there (or other regions that aren’t the US), but are being withheld from US audiences until some time after the show/season has finished so it could be released in one bingeable drop. They failed to take into account the expectations of anime audiences stateside for how week-to-week releases are handled by competitors like Crunchyroll that release episodes hours after they air in Japan, and were largely clowned on by such fanbases. Though nowadays, titles like the recently released Cyberpunk Edgerunners have successfully implemented the binge model because it was released in all regions in that format. So, the lesson for Netflix here is that, especially for international titles, they should adjust their release format to be consistent across all regions. If a title is being released week-to-week in its originating country, don’t make some segments of the world to wait to be able to binge, killing discussions or otherwise losing audiences to pirated sources in the meantime. And likewise, if a show is dropped all at once, then it definitely should stay that way across all regions.

They cancel shows if they're not getting the figures they wanted, and the move away from binge watching is to keep people subscribing week on week and to increase the water cooler chat around them. Content is key, and aside from a few great originals Netflix has, Disney is making more high quality original programming and not filling their homepage full of older or cheap reality shows and throwaway comedies.

These companies wanted to launch their own streaming service, but then because its on their own service you have to still pay a monthly subscription just to watch their content. So like for example if you wanted to watch any Disney Movie, you cannot do that because all of it is on Disney Plus. You will never find any Disney content on Netflix and you still have to keep paying money just to see your shows but they are on different services. Netflix needs to invest in quality writing and bold story telling, thats the niche no other studio/streaming service is willing to bet on overall. Having a handful of fantastic shows and movies across multiple streamers tells us that each streamer simply wants to have one or two golden children that bolsters the streamer's image with award badges, but still would rather fill their library will names and legacy titles over quality of storytelling. Disney has way more legacy titles and on-the-table money to play with, they are hard to compete with when it comes to producing blockbuster standard movies or cinematic series, but it bloats its own library by abusing the legacy titles, creating an oversaturation of one-note formulaic content that needs to fit into an assigned pre-destined universe which in addition to the eventual fatigue fans and casual viewers will get from such content, the programs are bound to collapse in on themselves through varying quality and nonsensical and unnecessarily plot models that are inherently borne from the limitations of necessary cohesion and progression through the universe (not to mention the family friendly boundaries most of their shows have to dance within). Netflix has been wasting money as of late with unnecessary blockbuster movies such as Rednotice and Grey, which are made for the summer cinema going experience you just don't get with the stay at home TV watching model that streaming produces, no matter how big your TV. They should take a note from A24 and focus on diverse, creative, risk-taking content that offers the writers and directors a sandbox for filmmaking creativity, that's what's missing; quality and that sense of uniqueness you leave the movie or show with where the viewer instantly knows they wouldn't have gotten that experience anywhere else, and they'll keep coming back for it.

Netflix should NOT go with ad tier. That's a bad idea. When your platform grew on having easy accessibility to content and distinguishing itself from traditional media, going to ad tier is bonkers. Disney+ Is not the same type of service as Netflix. It is a traditional cable company who is streaming legacy content. I am willing to bet that Netflix's watch time per subscriber is MUCH higher than ESPN+, Hulu or Disney+. Disney+ is not disruptive at all, so its explosion of subscribers is unsustainable. Disney+ will fade, and Netflix's core business model will continue to grow. I have already watched everything I could ever want to watch on Disney+, while I find a new interesting show/movie to watch on Netflix every day.

Any service that doesn't let you see what's on the service, unless you make a payment, should get a court order telling them to always have all their content visible at all times. Netflix doesn't want people to see what's on their service unless they pay. By than, it's too late, and you've wasted your money if you don't like what's on the service.

If Netflix continues to cancel great shows like Squid games and all the other very popular fare, and goes ahead with ads, and taking away the 2-3 same household licensing, then they will fail big time. As it is, my wife and I are watching slightly more content on Amazon Prime than Netflix. This is because the original shows and new content has all been cancelled or taken off-air on Netflix. In simple terms, Netflix needs better shows and better programming. Also live world news like AL-Jazeera or Reuters news. We stopped watching cable TV years ago and 90% of my TV time is spent watching educational things on KZbin now, with 10% split between Amazon Prime and Netflix.

I think as the years has gone by I find I watch Netflix overall less and less on a monthly basic as compared to previous years. Most the best show series I liked, many just been cancelled. A few remain. But so much stuff is now on Netflix it’s hard to find stuff you actually enjoy watching without having to just random watch shows to find out if like or not. Need a lot more quality shows vs a huge heap of shows that just aren’t as good. A focus more on quality vs quantity.
