I remember receiving a pair of NB for my birthday back in 1989. I was very upset cause at the time I rather have Nike air. No one in school was wearing NB, just when my mom lost her job a year a later, I started wearing that birthday present, we couldn't afford any shoes at all!!😅 Today I own 3 different pairs!!!❤

If someone told me a few years ago that New Balances would resell for hundreds over retail, I would have laughed at them. The hype has certainly died down a bit, but GR models at its peak were fetching upwards $700-900 on the resell market. The fact that a "dad shoe" that was belittled in 2016-2017 became glorified in 2019-2022 is so bizarre to me. As a reseller, I've seen trends come and go, but this was by far the biggest turnover. Maybe sketchers is next haha.

I found 1 photo of my dad in the 70's, he was still very young, 20 years later Bell Pants came back for a while, and i used them also.. Now i'm seeing kids using them again, and i like that.. I don't need an influencer, celebrity, or athlete to tell me that a shoe actually fits me and is comfortable. And, oh, yeah, it also delivers performance while being used during an athletic/sports activity. That New Balance acknowledges that not all feet are the same and then applies that to their product(s) is what makes me (and apparently many others!) keep on coming back for more. The product simply works.

The quality isn't just in the Made in Us or UK, I wear the budget New Balances as well for work and they have outlasted all other brands and are more comfortable than most as well. New Balance is a tennis shoe that is built to take care of the feet, ankles, and knees. Any exercise physiologist and knee surgeon will tell you the support you get from tennis shoes, especially the lateral (side to side) support, is important to both on court performance and knee and ankle protection. Increased mobility combined with health safety support is what every shoe built for tennis should be based on. This is why shoes specifically for tennis are made.

It's not about the shoe brand at all. There are plenty of brands offering comfortable shoes that might or might not work for you. First and foremost you need to figure out exact problems with your feet and choose the very specific shoe that fixes those particular problems. Just because I buy NB sneakers it's not guaranteed they will miraculously work for me. You have to pick exact model for your own unique set of circumstances like foot width, type of pronation, the height of your arch, etc... Stop being a brand fanatic. Brand means virtually nothing if they don't make shoes suited for your personal foot shortcomings. It's all about the specific shoe characteristics that will serve you individually. I have bought Asics sneakers for years thinking this is a reputable brand that makes good quality comfortable shoes, so it's automatically a slam dunk, but guess what? Those Asics were not comfortable for me at all. Does that mean Asics a bad brand? No. I just picked the wrong model that did not address my personal feet problems.

Back in high school and college days Nike was an upstart that was moving in on Puma and Adidas running/track shoes. A few years later New Balance became popular due to the availability of different widths of all their shoe models along with Asics' predecessor the Onitsuka/Tiger brand (Nike shoes were always tight on my feet). For a while NB became the preferred shoe for road racing/marathons and Onitsuka was preferred track spikes if you had wide feet. The 608 cross trainers 2018 and before were wonderful. I was a gym owner for 14 years. and wore them all the time. Also played racquetball and did wind sprints in them. SINCE 2018 the new Versions ( I bought some in 2023 after the last 8 pair wore out) are TERRIBLE with hard soles and thin inserts. My Plantar Faciitis that had been gone for 20 years came back in 3 days. I am now searching for new shoes. I would like to see New Balance go back to making them the way they did 2018 and before when made in Indonesia.

Surprised there was no mention on nb numeric. Them doing a good job entering the skate market gave them skate street cred. And skate fashion tends to bubble up to hype fashion which bubbles into 'higher' fashion. Same way nike sb dunks caused a huge nike hype revival outside of jordans.

I was wondering why I was suddenly obsessed with this brand when their shoes look very basic (ordered a shoe a couple days ago) and it's because of celebrities and influencers wearing them which is pushing their agenda. Their marketing is working!

Actually New Balance have a policy that doesn’t pay these celebrities, athletes, and influencers to wear their products. It speaks for itself how comfort and timelessness help on promoting their product.

I rocked lots of the classic 574’s in high school because you had so many color choices to coordinate and then in my 20’s I discovered their Minimus running shoes with the Vibram bottoms I put hundreds of miles on many pairs until they changed up the design and fit to where they just weren’t the same anymore.

How can you do a story and omit the fact that NB has also produces exceptional models out their factory in Flimby England? NB opened their first production factory in Workington, West Cumbria in 1982, from there to Flimby in 1991. The factory employs 273 people and produces 580,00 pairs of kicks annually. My personal favorites, 1500 and 991 are " Made in England " models. NB, in my opinion offers a superior quality product that is understated, yet stylish, quite comfortable and very practical. Those that know just know. FACTS!!

I wore New Balance from 2001-2005. The shock absorbency was terrible and I got shin splints. Switched to Asics in 2005 and never looked back. As a PT, I recommend Asics to A LOT of patients and they are always pleased.

Perhaps this collector feels confident that New Balance has not betrayed their nerd roots, but we CAN be confident that they have betrayed the wide footed amongst us. This was a company that used to produce the bulk of their styles in 4E widths, so that folks with wide feet knew that they were not left out of the style trends at NB. This is no longer the case. They have even changed their sizing designations. IT is a different company, and they have left their orthopedic roots behind.

I remember even in the 2000s and early 2010s, the only people wearing “dad sneakers” were generally not the most popular or well liked kids. First people who come to mind are classmates who were on the spectrum, or with some form of developmental disability/delay. You weren’t uncool for wearing the sneakers, it’s just that those shoes were associated with being uncool, if that makes sense. I vividly remember always wearing skate shoes as a teen. Toms, vans and other similar popular shoe styles at the time didn’t have enough support for me😅

I remembered that my shoes for the whole grade school years were New Balance. In the Philippines, only a few wear NB when Nike, Adidas, Puma and others are more popular. I didn’t have them in High School and College though. At 45, I realized I never had wore NB since 13. Hahaha.

New balance shoes are one of the best shoes I have everworn since childhood. I didn't care what kids at school had. Nike,Adidas, puma, etc. In Middle school I had New Balance, and ASICS. Fantastic brands for the price. Light, confortable and affordable. That's all it matters. With Nike shoes, one takes the brand off,it only costs like $10 to make the shoe.

I always wore NB tennis shoes, the white/gray ones in the eighties and it was the only sole that could keep up with my intense use. Nike I wore down like they had cake as soles. Here in te Netherlands they were not seen as dad shoes over here, not that I know of at least.

Absolutely. I switched to NB from Nike and Reebok back in the late 80s because they were the first company I knew of that offered shoes for different feet width. Eventually I convinced many of the male members of my family to switch too. The comfort made us stay. Now that they have become a fashion statement, I am not liking that they aren’t as freely available on sale anymore. It used to be a sports person’s secret now it is a blooming fashion statement. Ugh!
