The current market/economy is unnecessarily tougher for bloomers/senior citizens. Over the years I was just buying and holding onto potential assets, which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market trend, plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I’m really worried about survival after retirement.

Through portfolio restructuring and diversification with good ETFs, S&P 500 and growth stocks, I've turned my portfolio around from $180k to over $440k in a year. @@KK-pm7udIt is how it works. There's a case study for it in the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. The idea is to spur on domestic industry by making imports more expensive for consumers, making domestic products more desirable. The problem is that we are an import-based/service economy with little in the way of a manufacturing sector. Prices go up, and countries usually retaliate which hurts exports for American companies. It just puts us in a box with little leverage.

Why can't a single reporter challenge Trump when he talks about tariffs as if other countries pay them? Not a single person has even brought that up when he says "we're going to take in so much money from other countries" and "charge tariffs on other countries" etc., they just let him get away with it. 1. t'Rump thinks the US doesn't need anything from other countries. Once the tariffs start against Canada, Mexico, China, etc It will make it MORE expensive for US companies to get things cheaper from us. The high cost of living in the US will get higher. 2. Yes Canada's dollar will go down, but that will mean more US tourism which will help our retail, hotel, restaurant, ski resorts sectors. Also less Canadians will cross border shop in the US which means our money will stay home & border towns in the US will suffer & business' will close, creating unemployment. 3. Canada should only raise tariffs on US products that we don't need (because we produce our own) like alcohol, food, clothing, cars, etc

At the simplest level, tariffs are taxes placed on goods made overseas that are imported into the country. Notably, foreign companies aren't responsible for paying the duties. Instead, U.S. businesses directly pay the tariffs on their imported goods to the federal government, and pass the cost to American consumers.

Stronger US dollar will give more international purchasing power to American importers BUT it will reduce exports of products & services to the rest of the world. Combined with the tariffs US consumers will pay, America could be facing a dramatic spike in inflation, rising unemployment, food shortages etc. Watch out if Canada retaliates on the tariffs by reducing electricity, oil, and natural gas exports. Could get cold in the Mid-West, New York, and Boston! Turning off their exported electricity for even an hour or two a day should make Trump realize the tariffs weren't such a good idea.

Tariffs are a tax at the wholesale level on imports. It is a form of a national sales tax that is paid by the ultimate customer. A shoe is imported from China at a wholesale price of $25. It is taxed at $2.50. Transportation and other mark ups add another $50. The price at the register is $77.50 then sales tax is added at 10% so the total price is $85.5. That is $2.75 higher than it would have been without the tariff and goes to the federal government to reduce income tax. Canada produces oil that US refineries are set up to use. They can reconfigure but that take time. So they will pay $75 to Canada and $18.75 to the federal government so that they can reduce income taxes on the wealthy. The reason for the hurry is Congress is trying to extend and pass a tax bill that benefits the rich.
@donkeymarco
@donkeymarco 5 күн бұрын
Even worst generalized tariffs increase prices even more for products where there is only one, or few, local manufacturer. As for oil, Canada could eventually put an export tariff on oil export toward U.S.A. when they will find refineries around the world willing to accept their crude oil, or just build new refineries in Canada.

Canada should immeiately put a levy of 2 percent in increments every week on oil until it brings it up to the highest tariff rate Trump has put on Canadian imports. Each weeks increase should be accompanied by a press release, so the American news can be flooded each week with how Trumps tariffs are backfiting on Americans at the pump. Over the years, millions of American jobs have been outsourced due to NAFTA, impacting various industries and contributing to the global outsourcing market. Trump has been critical of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) for years, arguing that it led to job losses and trade imbalances for the U.S. Raising tariffs can lead to more jobs coming back to the U.S. by encouraging companies to manufacture goods locally. I didn't vote for Trump, but I'm with him on this issue. This is long overdue. American made products will be better quality.

The AI thinks the flat tariff is a mistake but not tariffs altogether. Comparing the Multi-Layered Tariff Approach vs. a Flat Tariff Approach for Two Countries Case Study: U.S. Tariffs on China vs. U.S. Tariffs on Mexico To illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of a multi-layered tariff approach vs. a flat tariff approach, we compare how each strategy would function against China (a strategic competitor) and Mexico (a trade partner and manufacturing hub). 1. Multi-Layered Tariff Approach (Strategic, Sector-Specific Tariffs) ✅ Targeted sectors with high economic & strategic impact ✅ Minimizes collateral damage to U.S. consumers and allies ✅ Maximizes economic leverage on China’s high-tech ambitions ❌ More complex to enforce and requires global coordination U.S. Tariffs on China (Multi-Layered Approach) Focus: High-tech sectors, supply chain choke points, strategic imports Examples: Semiconductors & AI chips: Slows China’s technological growth EDA software & semiconductor tools: Blocks China’s chip self-sufficiency Aerospace & defense technology: Disrupts China’s military-industrial complex Effect on China: High long-term economic disruption due to reliance on U.S. technology Slows China’s industrial modernization and military development Forces China to invest in costly, inferior domestic alternatives U.S. Tariffs on Mexico (Multi-Layered Approach) Focus: Selective tariffs on autos, steel, or specific industries where U.S. wants reshoring Examples: Automotive sector: Tariffs only on components to encourage U.S. production Agricultural goods: Avoid tariffs to maintain food supply chains Effect on Mexico: Encourages nearshoring and U.S.-Mexico economic integration Avoids disruptions in industries vital to U.S. consumers Tariffs remain a negotiation tool, rather than blanket punishment 🔹 Outcome: For China, this approach maximizes pressure on strategic weaknesses. For Mexico, it preserves trade benefits while nudging reshoring efforts. 2. Flat Tariff Approach (Uniform Tariff Across All Goods) ✅ Simple to implement and enforce ✅ Reduces trade loopholes and circumvention ✅ Applies consistent economic pressure ❌ Harms U.S. consumers and businesses indiscriminately ❌ Weakens strategic impact by treating all goods equally U.S. Tariffs on China (Flat Tariff Approach) Example: A blanket 10-25% tariff on all Chinese imports Effect on China: Encourages China to shift trade routes to avoid U.S. tariffs Fails to isolate key strategic industries-China finds alternatives in low-tech sectors (e.g., textiles, household goods) Harms U.S. consumers by raising prices on everyday goods (electronics, clothing, furniture) U.S. Tariffs on Mexico (Flat Tariff Approach) Example: A blanket 15% tariff on all Mexican imports Effect on Mexico: Damages industries highly integrated with U.S. supply chains (autos, agriculture) Increases costs for U.S. companies and consumers without achieving a specific economic goal Incentivizes foreign automakers to move production to Asia rather than the U.S. 🔹 Outcome: For China, this approach lacks strategic precision, allowing China to adapt easily while harming U.S. consumers. For Mexico, it disrupts integrated industries unnecessarily, weakening North American economic cooperation. Conclusion: Why the Multi-Layered Approach Is Superior ✔ For China - A strategic, sector-specific tariff approach maximizes leverage, disrupts high-tech progress, and avoids harming U.S. consumers unnecessarily. ✔ For Mexico - A selective tariff strategy preserves beneficial trade flows, targets only industries relevant to U.S. interests, and strengthens North American supply chains rather than hurting them. A flat tariff is a blunt tool that fails to exploit strategic weaknesses while unnecessarily damaging U.S. industries and consumers. In contrast, a multi-layered approach ensures that tariffs work as a precise economic weapon rather than a general economic burden.
