Probably most viewers have no idea what a brave thing it was for Mr Bachher to meet with Palestine protestors, all alone. The Sikh community, of which he is obviously a part of, is known to be brave, hard working and very devout. The gentleman has an approach and mindset all university officials should have. However, some of his comments are quite troubling. My daughter attends UCLA. As a senior in HS she wrote a paper for her honors sociology class on Palestine. Just as she learned when researching her paper about the Nakba and violence since, just as she saw when Israeli supporters started violence against pro Palestine students on campus, just as we have all recently seen with the Maccabi Tel Aviv hooligans starting violence in Amsterdam- Israel has a free pass to unleash whatever violence it chooses. With impunity. No other nation can murder American citizens with impunity. Except Israel. So as many rational people do, I take issue with the gentleman's comment that its complicated. No. Its not. He's very slick and smart and if he actually gave his number to students and were they didn't follow up or at least pass it on to faculty advisors then that's definitely a mistake, although as he pointed out there wasn't much he was going to do. But there's a much bigger issue and that's that. this isn't just a call from students. It's a call from faculty as well. he could have reached out to any faculty at any time. People who actually have a strong understanding of finance and of investments and of the way to divest from industries and companies that operate against the principles upon which a university is supposed to be founded and run. focusing on the inability or failure of 20-year-olds or even younger to follow up on a phone call with the most senior investment person in the UC system is a bit cheap as an argument. there's literally dozens of UC faculty who could sit down with him and other members of the financial and investment Brain trust and figure out ways to have a far more ethical investment portfolio. 1) The CIO gave a long story that could have been summed up in 2-3 sentences. 2) If these students were Pro-Nazi (as a example), would he have wanted to meet with them? As such, there is the double standard treatment when it comes to Israel and the Jewish people. When people ignorantly protest Jews/Israel, that is ok/free speech. However, if someone protests an African American group (as an example), that is horrible/not allowed.
