Wood tools are always a pleasure to use, and they look beautiful in the shop after the work is done. So, when I saw the 36” wooden brass-capped rule from Woodsmith, I knew I had to have one and design some accessories for it.

I love these videos I just keep rewatching waiting for the next one. I’m curious how you guys would tackle something bigger and more complex like for example a smallish bent lamination cabinet? Where the side or bottom is curved and how you would gland the joinery of that

Thank you for watching! I would like to start exploring some more complex furniture projects. I enjoy complex curves and shapes and all of the challenges they offer - and what better machine to use than a CNC router.

One thing to consider when building your own CNC is how to house the electronics. I used an old PC case for a handful of reasons. First it was cheap. Second, it's a nice metal construction to help shield sthe system from noise. And finally, I was able to repurpose the existing power supply. Besides the power for the motors, you're going to need 5 VDC and sometimes 12 VDC. The PC power supply has outputs for these. To make it easy to use these, you can buy a simple board that mimics the connection on the motherboard that the power supply plugged into. This breaks out all the different outputs from the power supply into easy connections that you can use however you want. It's a simple system that is inexpensive and works out pretty well.

Thank you for sharing this. I am thinking about making a few more homebuilt CNC routers and the electronics are a big part of the machine. I have had some issues with interference form dust collectors and such making the machines do odd things so I like the idea of a shielded case.

Thank you very much for watching. I look forward to making each episode because creating with a CNC router offers so many possibilities - wish I could spend more time with it.

Really nice CNC project for the shop! Too cold for my garage shop yet here in MN but looking forward to a project like this soon.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I understand the cold shop problem. I have a blacksmithing forge in the garage and it is definitely a seasonal hobby.

Didn't you use to use Vectric software? Any reason why you didn't mention it at the end of this video?

I did use Vectric VCarve - sorry if I wasn't clear about that. I tend to do all of my design work on Autodesk Inventor since that's what I use for my work with Woodsmith and Shopnotes. I then create DXF files and import them into Vectric VCarve. I plan on doing projects using VCarve alone, or Fusion 360, or Alibre Workshop and migrating away from using Inventor for Basecamp in the future.
