If you make the rails on the table/bed part a bit more recessed, you could have removable covers to 'hide' the rail when not using this as a flattening rig. This could be the main 'workbench'' most of the time, with only the rolling sled part needing storage

Izzy, not only is it a slab flattener, planer sub, jointer sub, but you utilized CNC properties by having the gantry being the reference edge for all of the machining. I imagine that something like this led to the modern-day CNC machine. 🤔 Adding to @myGrowthrings mount 1 edge to a wall and make it fold down to keep a slim profile when not in use, or possibly even use it in a vertical orientation. The gantry will always be the referenced machine edge and I have seen CNCs work folded up against the wall...
@TheMadManPlace7 ай бұрын
Using it in a vertical or near vertical orientation has the added advantage that the chips, dust and swarf immediately fall away from the cutting bit so that the life of the bit is helped.

Interested to see what other ideas you come up with for it.

Hi Izzy, what a fantastic build. I've been wanting and trying to get my garage up and running as a shop so I can work from home. Lots of pauses in the plan because of all the cr ap life throws at us such as health and bereavements etc and the impact they gave on finances. This is a fantastic build even if it is a prototype, a number of my tools got destroyed in a garage flood and I haven't been able to replace them. Fortunately I still have some tools like my faithful old Elu 1/2 router. This build would enable someone like myself to turn my router in to a completely universal tool and save initial costs. I love this! It may take more floor space than a planer when being stored, but not in usage. Planing an 8' board requires a least 8' of infeed AND 8' of outfeed. This could theoretically do it with only 8' (plus a smidge for fixturing) total. I'd love to also see the router be in a removable carriage so it could be swapped out for a powerful sander or a circular saw! If you add slide locks and a good tape measure (or maybe threaded rod and half nut for incremental adjustment), you could have a killer panel saw! it wouldn't be quite as flexible as a table saw or track saw, but you could cut awesome panels for cabinets! Oh, with the slide locks and the router, you could do perfect dados too!!!

This is quite spectacular, really cool. @Izzy, I am sure you quite know what you are doing. But for everyone that considers building this: note that dust extraction is difficult with this open gantry setup. Please, please use PPE to protect your lungs. Open milling creates fine particulates, and they will ruin your breathing if you do not protect yourself every time you do this kind of work, including quite a bit of time afterwards. The fine particles will stay suspended in the air for a long time.

That's a fabulous build Izzy. I built a similar one (no gantries) but I added a 4-inch dust port and a barn door track on the ceiling to keep the hose out of the way. I also added EPDM rubber wipers. This setup eliminates 90% of the chips.

My thoughts on it is when you figure for infeed/outfeed this might actually save space in a small shop. And having the angle cutting to me at least seems like a huge safety benefit. I'm not going to speak for everyone here, but I have never felt safe having my blade in any other direction than a 90. Just always feels like something will go amiss. I’ve been considering a very similar idea for a bit now after seeing how affordable those linear rails are getting. One thing you could maybe add is a one to one copy fixture by adding a template and a pointer to trace your template that is attached to the router base. I’ve been thinking of also adding stops to the rails to basically turn the flattening jig milling machine for wood. Maybe even aluminum in a pinch.
@gdonham1203 Жыл бұрын
I like your idea. The moveable table is cool. I have a 5' x10' slab flattening jig and bought linear rails that I have not installed yet. I bought a Lee Valley rail kit that uses electrical EMT for the rails. That works but it will sag if you are not careful. The matchfit is a very useful tool and helps keep your table from being eaten up by screwing stops in to keep your slabs from moving. I have a Porter Cable 7519 3 HP router with the Infinity Mega dado bit and that works so great. Looks like that might be what you were using. The flattening jig I have is an open 2x6 table and I think I will steal your idea and put a plywood top on with the matchfit clamps and hardware. Nice job. I also have a CNC and I can see you made your moveable table on the CNC. That brings a level of accuracy that you just cannot do with manually cutting the slots and so on that you made for the moveable table. There are several plans floating around for making a work bench with the match fit system and they also go down the sides. Keep it up.

It's also my outfeed table for my tablesaw which has my router lift in the wing. But I could definitely figure out a way to place this on top or in some way incorporate it into my setup. love the smile and joy you bring Izzy, cool thing about this build is guanine idea that can be customized further and a electrical planer can even go into it. best part i would like is a longer plunge for vertical precision drill using router.. eve as deep as 6inches makes it a killer combination. if can run using a template reader can be a copier Aswell... love this build very much... Thank you for the team and letting you pull this off.. joy watching You work around these solutions...

Just realized that this video is 7 months old, but I'de like to suggest an idea. Maybe you've done it allready. Put some Led lights under the router. Protected with acrilic. But this table is something beautifull. Very very cool and cheap and very functional. Love your videos. Best regards from Portugal

Wow. That chamfer/taper side table is wild. I started this video thinking it would be just a well built router sled using nice linear bearings. Holy smokes, this is genius!

Damn dude I'm really thinking on this one. Watched the video twice. If your could have the leaf folded up flat with the table you could get bigger slabs. Also making a housing to fit a circular saw too and stop blocks on the sled to make a track saw. Needs casters too!

So cool! The aggressive chamfer capability clinched it for me. How about some dust collection? Maybe with a plexiglass box so you can still see what you are doing?

I just found you and am so glad. Can't wait to build some of your projects and get our shop up and going. This table is a great idea since it is small. We have a shipping container for a work shop and this is perfect! can't wait to watch more.

Love the design. It's giving me some great ideas for when I get round to building a bench next summer. I was just thinking, maybe including Dog Holes so you've got some options for clamping, and maybe the bench can become an assembly table as well.

I'm 20 seconds in, and can see how superior that thing is!!!

My first thought is that for planing, this eliminates snipe. I really like it.
