Very well done series so far. There's far too much misinformation by probably well meaning but less than fully informed people both on KZbin and the machining forums about this subject. Even at the hobby level a copy of the Connelly book should be on everyone's bookshelf. And I more than agree with your point in the first video about spending what's required to get high quality, accurate, and repeatable measuring equipment that can be relied on to perform up to the requirements. Machine tool testing and alignments can be a complicated subject and I think your doing great to show and explain it as well as you have.

Thank you Turning Point, means a lot. This series by far has taken the most amount of time to shoot. There is still a lot left to go! I owe a lot to the person who taught me. He spent a lot of time teaching the theory and then letting my make my own mistakes and how to get it right. After this series is done I'm hoping to have him bring in his laser system and show how high end machines are done.

Unfortunately I've had to pretty much self educate myself about this so it takes a very long time to even find the correct information. But I think if you can get that laser system shown it would be really interesting to see how it's properly done today. I am looking forward to the rest of the videos you have planned. No CNC equipment, linear or box ways in my shop. But the alignment tests are still the same for what I have.

I wonder if you could shim the rails or scrape underneath them to compensate the curve in x axis discussed in the previous videos. Shimming would probably be really bad for rigidity though.

What is the proper procedure to align the granite square to the table before testing?

For me with this system meausure nothing if the table is parallel to guide but inclinate both... Because the dial will pass always only from one point from x+ to x-,so the dial will indicate always 0...while if the guide are parallel and the table is twisted is ok the system... If the table is all x or on x+ is normal that on the final the dial increase because the weight is all on one side....

The table is an unknown, it could have error in it, it could not. The stone is a calibrated square with less then 1 arcsec of error. Once the machine is square you can then run one of the slots on the table to make sure it is parallel with the motion of X. But the rotation of the table does not indicate squareness between X and Y.

I'm confused. If you adjust the stone so that it's straight, then it should always be straight, right? This could catch waviness, but how exactly does it catch straightness?

"Waviness" is the opposite of "straightness", if its wavy its not straight. Adjusting the stone to get it roughly straight is where you want to start and then adjust out the low and high points to get the rails not to be wavy. Then you can check the opposite axis and check if its square.
