I like the format of this video a lot, very easy to follow. Sometimes with build videos you can’t tell what’s being made until the end but this one was clear while showing great closeups of details that might have otherwise been confusing without the drawing and description. Great job!

Thank you, I will hopefully get more done to it as I have changed jobs and have now moved, so hopefully I will get more time to tinker in the garage. Thank you for your sub 👍

Very inspiring work, Neil! I found this channel as I was searching for the SX1 mill but I subscribed for the solid engineering work!

Thank you Leo, It's taken a long time getting here and am very near making another video on the X-Axis. I love my Sieg X1, it's seen me through 10 years of faultless operation, even the nylon gears are original (think I'm noo gentle for it). Love your channel, I am an old-school electronics engineer where I used to fix Amiga's, Atari ST's, Monitors, well anything ;-D. Thank you for subscribing.

@@Dev255 Thanks Neil! Knowing what you know now about the SX1, would you still get it? I've been going back and forth on the Axminster SX1 and SX2. The price difference between them isn't *that* big and 500W DC brushless motor with belt drive seems like a good deal!
@Dev255
@Dev255 4 жыл бұрын
If I was buying again, I think the X2 would have it as the motor drive gears on the X1 can be a little noisy and have a little backlash, so can cause increased chatter when milling, plus the difference between 150w to 500w and additional 500rpm of speed would win it for me, plus an extra 10mm of lateral and 40mm of longitudinal movement is a plus. If your not worried about price, then the X2 wins I believe. What I would ask is, if you bought the X1 would you be constantly be thinking... what if I bought the X2? Plus the X2 has the controls on the front... Think I just sold it to myself haha

@@Dev255 All good points. Especially the last thing (I'd think endlessly about what if I'd spring for the X2). Anyway thanks very much for the insight!

Absolutely AMAZING editing and detail. This video deserves a heck of a lot more views. Honest Tip: I think the only thing holding video quality down for large youtube audiences is the camera/video quality during dialogue parts.

Thank you, I agree, I now have a nice setup in our new garage + have a decent mic. It's nice to get great feedback, it really helps with the channel. Glad you enjoyed it 👍

Great job! Is there a design decision to be made about putting the encoder on the motor compared to down the transmission line to the shaft of the mill?
@Dev255
@Dev255 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you, yes at the moment I have an AMT 102 on the back of an ODrive motor and that is working great (there is another video on that one 😁). As with one on the mill table itself, I may try the same encoder attached directly to the table to get accurate position control too, that way I should be able to track and remove most of the backlash during operation.

Hi does your mill have the original motor and gears ? or you upgrade something ?
@Dev255
@Dev255 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes my mill has it's original 240v 150W motor and original nylon gears (both 10 years old), but these will be upgraded to a brushless motor and belt-driven spindle. All this will run off Solar Energy :-D.
