Little correction, you don't invest on KS, you donate to the project. That's a key difference regarding liability.

you essentially preorder. legally most countries don't have donating in exchange of promise of a product as concept separate from buying. anyway you can pledge money to the project without anything in exchange or make a pledge in exchange for promise of getting the product. there is more than "oh well the money is gone" with kickstarter, but if a company is belly up the company is belly up, but it's not like a company can just say that they had a headache and not ship and keep the money and keep operating. the kickstarters a formality... they've sent units to basically everyone on youtube now. those vids and this video are legally 'paid' promotion because the product was received from them, influencer marketing regulations wise.

@@lasskinn474 nope, it is not a preorder. preorder guarantee that you get the product on the delivery date or else they will need to refund. donation is the right word, you will or will not get what you donated to.

@@MegaMaking there is a vat/tax, a payment and a promise of spending the money to deliver a product. Its a preorder with a flexible delivery date, kickstarter never refers to anything as a donation instead you pledge to pay when the ks closes. Besides for most countries what it is being referred to doesn't change consumer laws. When ks says on their rules that you're not preordering its qualified that you're not preordering an existing product. The companies can also get sued for fraud by state. You can also sue a company for not delivering the promised reward that was promised in exhange for money. Often there isn't any legal instance to sue for the money unless you can show that the creator just embezzled the money and didn't spend it on trying to deliver - it is extrmely easy however to spend the ks money legally as wages to yourself or such and that just leaves the isolated llc to sue and they'll be bankrupt, exactly same as if you preordered a product and they went bankrupt while holding your money from a normal website. And yes people and companies have been sued for not delivering. You're under same risk when ordering basically anything though the company could go belly up before they deliver what you ordered. You can also issue a chargeback but often the promised delivery dates are way after a chargeback period. Like, look, if you could just sell stuff in exchange of a donation everyone would do that. University guilds and such often do that but it doesn't actually change running an underground bar into being legal. Much like calling a ponzi scheme a blessing circle where you make a donation doesn't make it legal because it was a 'donation' given in exchange of receiving donations. So anyway, if you run a KS scam better to form some asian hard to investigate llc to do it so it's harder for anyone to sue you if you fail delivering after paying yourself most of the money as interest for a loan you signed for the company. Point is that legally they're on the hook to deliver the product or you can sue them, practicalities of suing an american company or a dude being a lot easier than some wish scammer.

@lass kinn I was going to argue that it is indeed a donation, but you two are both correct and just arguing over semantics (how you each personal view the word donation/pre-order to mean given context)... Personally i think donation is an acceptable description as there have been several KS campaigns that failed to deliver. No the companies were not sued or faced legal issues but even though they promised if you donate X money you get this, it's only under the stipulation that if they get the project working do you get it. Invest is probably the better term and yes pre-order is a term that could be used to (depending on how trustful you are on the campaign you are backing). In my mind, if you donate (give) money to a politicians campaign and they promise let's say student loan forgiveness if elected president, I wouldn't use the term "I pre-ordered student loan forgiveness" because honestly I don't trust politicians and anything they say. If you are more trustful of the campaign then yes as odd as it sounds pre-ordering student loan forgiveness does make sense. But the meaning behind donation/pre-order is based on how you view an organization (the more trustworthy the more pre-order seems correct and donation seems incorrect). But this is a pointless argument on semantics and different people view words and meanings differenttly.

@@ZenithWest169 ks has a working prototype stipulation so if the tech doesn't work is faked it becomes fraud already.. Its quite easy as a company to just dump the money and run though. Indiegogo doesn't have the already developed stipulation and laxer rules for the projects to explain where the money went(although ks can do little to force the companies explain the breakdown of where money went despite it being in the rules) Ofc its best to approach it as a gamble of sorts. Also for a non igg/ks example of possibility of not getting a refund even if explicitly promised the preorder cash wouldn't be touched by the company see the amico fiasco. (This is for physical products, games and such have different rules on ks) Edit: safest way to preorder is through a local retailer you think wont go bankrupt such as gamestop or whatever, although who knows about gamestop, who are on hook to refund you regardless if their supplier goes bankrupt

I backed this and went for the X1 Carbon with AMS. I currently own the original Creality Ender 3. I heavily modified this as far as I can. While I get great prints, I know there is better. This unit from Bambu Labs looks like the next jump in 3D printing. It's already set for the higher temps required filaments, so i can skip upgrading my Ender.....thank God. I'm getting tired of tearing the Ender apart and trouble shooting to get it right. These guys appear to have that solved. Thank Stefon for the excellent video. You are a great credit to the 3D Printing community. I'm sure many have benefited from your knowledge.

Hey Stefan, I just wanted to say I really appreciate your coverage on the machine. Especially closer looks at the electronics and how everything works. Im pretty bummed that the AMS has some spool limitations. I definitely have a more positive outslook on the machine after seeing all of this, I'm not going to buy until it goes retail, i've been burned by lesser investments in the past, but these guys seem to have everything worked out. That being said, i certainly see it getting much more expensive with domestic stock that includes tariffs and shipping to the warehouse.

Love the innovations and it will help wake up the other 3D printer manufacturers to innovate. I have bought two kickstarter 3D printers and the amount of energy and time I had to put into them to get them flying right was not worth the money saved. I like the Bambulab features but I see a lot of plastic and wonder how the printer will hold up over time. All of my current printers are working very well. I will sit this generation out and wait for the "2.0" versions to arrive.

Oh boy! I really hope that bambulab's market entry will be successful! If it is, this will become one of my favourite textbook examples of great innovation management! They have it all! Being a spin off from DJI, an unlikely competitor for the established companies, taking Prusa, Ultimaker etc. by surprise. They offer a great customer value with their automated tuning process and hasslefree setup. They bring new tech to the table that the established firms don't have. They enter the market via a low risk, high publicity campaign, securing funding and advertising at once. And they apparently did their economics homework and planed their production scale ahead. Please let them be succesful and give the 3D printer industry some fresh competition! I would love to see this work!

The timing of this campaign can't have been very welcome in the Prusa camp, with the XL on pre-order. However, the XL has a larger bed and tool-changing, which might be more suitable for some people. It's also a proper pre-order and not a KS campaign, which will be a deal-breaker for a lot of people. Will be interesting to see how both the X1 and the XL fare in the next year or two.

Excellent video! I believe 08:18 is incorrect. The Bambu Lab blog entry on the AMS explicitly mentions that there is a hygrometer (humidity sensor) in place, but I don't believe its raw output is available anywhere. When the desiccant is used up as detected by the humidity sensor the LCD will warn you to replace it.

I think this is the printer I've been waiting for to upgrade from my modified Balco / Wanhao i3 Plus. Not as part of the Kiskstarter or even as a customer of an early production machine. Once they are more established / fine tuned, and I know more about spares availability, etc. Thanks for mentioning that the Fiberlogy spools don't fit in the AMS. That is a shame - I guess I'd have to respool my Fiberlogy filament.

Great video. This looks cool. But a non-user replaceable nozzle is kind of a buzz kill. This seems so complicated that it's going to have problems and they did not build it with service in mind.

They built the nozzle and block as one unit but it's not too expensive. It's only 15 dollars. Hopefully they dont jack up the prices in the future so I plan on buying a few spares right now while the price is cheap.

The "LIDAR" IS almost certainly a laser triangulation sensor. Low-cost LIDAR only has cm accuracy. Even high end LIDAR can't measure with tens of microns accuracy. It's the wrong tool for the job, whereas laser triangulation is the right tool.

They may need the triangulation lasers to do bed leveling. But the flow adjustment can for sure be done with a camera.

The FDM 3D printing industry haven't been in motion for a long time now, little tiny new features added to multiple devices but never a real game changer. Hopefully, starting from the next year this loop will break, with the new printers on the market actually having something new, the Prusa XL, the Anker 3d printer and now this, hopefully we can see some new and actually useful innovations in FDM 3D printing industry. Though I hope that the open-source spirit of the 3D printing community doesn't fade away with all these patented and mass produced devices, one of the most important things that's been pushing this community forward in my opinion is that our first priority now is actually working together for advancing this technology, not to just make some money and leave.

Thing is, most people are fine with just an Ender3. For most purposes, an ender3 really can just get the job done. For any change to be put on the market, their gonna have to introduce all these features at the lowest price point they can. 3D printer owners arent exactly your average Macbook user, who are willing to spend $2k on a shitty i3 processor just cus "its easier". People are gonna value the modularity and hackability of their printers. This printer does so much stuff right honestly. But a cooler engineering challenge would be to make the cheapest most barebones no-nonsense 3D printer, that has all these features done in the cheapest way possible. Something like what Creality did with the Ender3. Imagine these same engineers going gung ho creating the most simplistic 3D printer possible with the most readily made and compatible parts. I still feel like 3D printers can become a hellavulot cheaper

I’ll buy one as soon as it’s available to ship from their website. This printer will complement my Method-X perfectly (the Method-X’s heated chamber allows me to print large PC parts at 95% infill with perfect flatness and the DEX setup means that I don’t have to watch $170/kg support filament get pooped out the back end of the machine). What this machine will give me over the Method-X is speed, build size, and a not-terrible software experience. I expect this machine will perform all my printing outside of large solid pieces in warp prone materials. I’ll order an AMS if it can be modified to fit Prusa and 3DXTech spools.

Nothing matches a heated chamber for solid prints in warp prone materials. The Method-X gets a bad rep, but if you NEED large prints with 95% infill in warp prone materials then it’s the most cost-effective choice.

I backed this printer... let me state that first. However I don't feel it's fair to say Prusa doesn't innovate. Nearly every printer out is a clone of the Prusa, and they like Apple or android make small iterations and grow their business over time. That being said... the Bambi lab X1 carbon blew me away... all the features are just overwhelming... I'm so happy they are positioning themselves to be the next standard. In 10 years we will look and see many clones of this printer... because if manufacturers like Creality or Elegoo don't respond, they will be forgotten. Great video as always! I love your content.

Of course it is easyer to copy a machine if you are first of all aloud to and have all the plans and the software. I personally wouldn't go for that printer, because I personally really value the open source approach of prusa. It did soooo much for the 3d printing community. I totally understand that not everyone values open source as much as I do which is fine of course.

Backed it myself a few weeks ago after seeing how they're already able to deliver, and hope they are able to continue to do so with my and others backing! I have yet to purchase an FDM printer and only have a resin printer. Mostly I've been severely disappointed in setup times, unprofessional solutions, and overall print time of most of these extrusion printers. However, there are some applications where resin is not so great, namely having to deal with working around suction cupping on certain designs. Very excited to see you were able to receive one for an overview!

Thanks for the additional coverage on this printer Stefan! Got a pair of these on order, one with the AMS, and one without. Next month can't roll around fast enough. Have a few CR-10 v3's right now which have been solid 24/7 machines for the past year but i'm looking forward increased output, multicolor, and the ability to do PC6-CF out of the box with these X1 Carbons. Having these on the way is making me question if I'm going to stick with my Prusia XL preorder or not. The extra build volume and multiple extruders might push me to keep it too .

I've 'ordered' one and just hope it will survive the long shipment to Germany, people say will take up to 6 weeks, so better don't expect this awesomeness in July if it's going to be shipped by ship. IMO the first thing that other companies should offer is at least an optional enclosure. I just started with 3D-printing in October last year and the first things I was printing were parts for my DIY-case made with aluminium profiles and acrylic plate. It's not that I preferred it to a ready-made solution (could be offered way cheaper produced in bulks), but I couldn't find any for reasonable prices. My case does not only keep the dust outside and makes printing ASA like PLA, but there is also almost no smell even while printing ABS and it's considerably more quiet, energy-efficient with lower heat emissions. But this thing even makes printing without headed bed easy, or did you use a headed bed for PLA? Could you be so kind and measure the footprint of the case? Can't find any infos about it.

I really like your description of their scanning system Stefan! I have been wanting to know more about it but it seems few have dug into it. Nice to see they have an AC bed. Is it running a relay, SSR, or something else to handle the PWM? This is one of the more in depth reviews of the actual systems that make it work, thank you. This is what makes me interested in the X1. Fast CoreXY machines with resonance compensation are not new, but this level of sophistication at such a (relatively) low price-point definitely is. It already seems to be a very polished physical product and I look forward to seeing how they develop the firmware/software to improve the user experience.

Just received my X1c and it is truly awesome. So fast that videos don't do it justice. It has worked very well out of box. This machine exudes quality and polish and I am very happy with it. There have been a few small bugs: Using polyterra pla the default profile under extrudes by a small amount (this is an easily tuned software parameter in Bambu Studio). This was how I fixed the somewhat common X1 problem of top layer gaps. I have had a few errors where the Z axis failed to home and the printer thought the motors were overloaded. A recent firmware update appears to have fixed this. And I've had a few instances where the ams has pushed filament off the side of the spool when retracting and then when it tries to push that filament into the printer the ams binds up and asks for you to come fix it. In fairness this is with cardboard spools (which they don't recommend with the AMS). The included bed sticks WAY too well and gluestick is an absolute requirement, but you need to reapply very frequently. They sell a textured PEI bed on their site that I'm sure would address this, but you do need a bambulab bed because there is a special section of the bed that the X1 will clean it's nozzle against, so generic beds won't work. These small problems aside, this machine is lightyears ahead of anything else on the market and if you have the money I highly recommend it.

Thx Stefan showing us what exactly under the hood!!! It save me the cost to back one for and even no wait until July this year. 👍🏻 Based on the chip, it really carry the DNA of the team of DJI engineers. We can easy found the exact same chip from DJI product likes ESC board in Mavic mini. With the experience on such familiar hardware as well as collection of mature technologies/idea/mods from 3D communities, I will say it is a piece of cake for those engineers who makes this dream desktop 3D machine. The successful factor which also the most difficult part in product manufacturing are about “cost control” then “how to market it the best way”. With solid background learned from DJI so far and relatively low cost in mainland China, I truly believe they are not that had to archive their goal tbh. Additionally, I found this machine has already been reviewed by all famous KZbinr, with this strong support in Marketing pov, I can see this project will have a great success at the end.

I emailed Bambu Labs with a technical question and their response time was very fast. They answered my question within a very short time so I believe that customer service is going to be a high priority for them and they seem to have a desire to improve the product as time moves forward. So far I am very impressed.

I didnt find out about it until after the kickstarter but I put in my preorder. Excited to receive it. I think this company seems really competent which makes sense considering DJI is another highly competent consumer technology firm. Like you said, at this price point they probably need to sell tens of thousands of units to really be profitable. Hopefully the machine takes off.

Nice examination, you showed us all the hidden bit the other reviews missed (all the technical bits, like drivers). Makes a huge difference in confidence in the machine, although I would have liked to seen more interchangeable parts, maybe if bambu labs succeeds more 'clone' bits will be available. Would love to back it but a fixed income doesn't allow for many mistakes I'm afraid, so I have my fingers crossed for all the backers who have helped this come to market, thanks for taking the risk.

Yaaaas! Finally some digging into the details of the printer. Many don't get past "look, it prints fast, AMS *cough*MMU*cough*, and poop shoot". And finally a good look at the "LIDAR". Every time I brought that up, someone went "well they innovated on that. Nobody else has. All the other LIDAR systems aren't accurate or small enough" and now I see that it isn't really LIDAR in the way everyone knows it. Their solution still works, but it's like taking a sports car and calling it a race car. You can... but it misses what makes them different. I'm very happy they credit models and people and don't just take it. They certainly did their research to make a good printer. I'm still not sold until units get into people hands months down the line. That first shipment will be fine, but future shipments and manufacturing runs are what I'm more curious on. Your review was great. The only thing I worry about, and covered only by 1 other review (Breaks n Makes), is that apparently they're going to have subscriptions for slicer features and similar in the future. So how many of the features people are raving about will remain is to be seen. I did a larger writeup elsewhere, but the one part I want to bring over is one you mentioned; this is a needed wakeup call. I expect Prusa and a few others can adapt, but many won't. I also have stated "too many in 3D printing try to hardware-solution their way out of a software problem" and I think that is what's gonna make and break this and other systems. You can add as much cross bracing as you want, but if your system still gets ringing then you need software... and if the 3D printer community becomes "I just take it out of the box and print", then all the exposed wires and motors that make these machines tinker-er friendly are going to be the minority and may even be rejected for those reasons. (Tinkering will not go away though). Time will tell, but it's a step in the right direction. Will they become a Prusa/Ultimaker or will they fall by the wayside as others start to hit feature parity... to be seen.

I really appreciate that you directly tackled the comparison to Prusa and other similar market comps. I believe Prusa is a positive influence to the hobby however I’ve always been turned off by their price point compared to my perception of the build quality/materials. For only a slight price increase, Bambu by contrast offers what appears to be robust and well thought out construction & feature sets that provide some degree of future proofing in that I won’t be rushing out to buy the next mildly iterative product from another company. I’ve backed the X1 Carbon + AMS on day one and look forward to hopefully seeing Bambu deliver on the hardware and software fronts. I also chose to back the Anker M5 and I’m very much so looking forward to seeing how these both influence the greater market hopefully for the betterment of all involved in the hobby, prosumer, and small/medium business worlds.

Bambu is building on what Prusa and others have done and overcome for a decade or more, Borrowing all the ideas from the 3D printing community building your slicing software and firmware of of the hard work of others and bringing a machine to market with millions in backing before even starting a Kickstarter campaign maybe gives them a bit of a head start, Will it disrupt the market, yes. Is another competitor good, yes. Do they deserve some credit for the work they have done yes, but it is always easier after the hard work has been done.

@@thegarageluthier The question is, why the other companies like Prusa or Creality or others that flood the market, still produce the same not-so-advanced products? They had headstart since they are in the industry way before, but still fail to advance. Now this company made a proper product with the features that missing for years, and they did it with proper industrial engineering mindset!!! Selling an overpriced 3D printer, like Prusa is not innovation in my eyes. If it would have been made out of metal parts, rigid frame, modularity or anything professional, then I would say okay. But as long as zip ties holding the linear rails while others cloned it for 1/5th the price in metal, I should say that it is overpriced. As Stefan said (in reverse), there is always somethihg that is half-assed in other 3D printers, many times not just one thing, and many times it wouldn't even be more expensive to do it properly. I like hobby community and all, but I am an open-minded person who always want to improve. I don't have a full workshop with everything, like probably most of us, but I always try to somehow create proper parts with the tools I have and improve my skills. Half-assed is not an option for me. I am not shitting myself when I see a CAN bus or an USB connector, or a LQFP chip on a printhead, everything is learnable.

@@gabiold you do realize that just about everything you take for granted in 3d printing has been accomplished because of the hard work of others like Prusa? Flexible steel build plates, powdered coated PEI, temperature compensated level sensors, sensorless homing, all the firmware improvements for ease of operation through stepped setup. Duet and klipper and marlin for PA, for resonance compensation for core xy firmware implementation, for all the different levelling and tramming options and so many other things it's hard to count. But back to Prusa they have produced incremental upgrades over the years along with different advancements and then the SL1 and Prusa mini as well as the new XL and print farm system and software. Not to mention customer service and company growth along with all they have given back to the community.

@@thegarageluthier I want to add that inventing something doesn't mean you are done for good. You have to improve continuously otherwise others will do, and you'll be out of business sooner or later. It won't take away what you have been invented, but if you slow down, others will be ahead of you. Not only Prusa can innovate. While it did, several years ago, a whole lot of others did too, and still doing this day. While it can make up a great excuse that "But I was the first!", nobody cares outside of history articles, most users just want a better, more capable product in the present. Just to mention an example, MirageC does way cooler developments, in bigger steps, while (I assume) he is on a lot smaller budget. Cars are invented centuries ago, but you probably don't want to choose an early model for commuting to work, isn't it?

I backed it. Was about to back the Anker but, thankfully, I decided its just a fancier version of my Prusa MK3S so I decided not to back Anker. I had trouble with selecting a pledge, I tried to get the early bird one as soon as the Kickstarter campaign started but I couldn't. I gave up and got the X1 carbon combo instead. I still ended up being backer 1,700+! That was in the first 10-20 minutes, I think.

Hadn't seen the filament cutter in the extruder assembly before. Had no intention of getting the AMS at retail before, but with the filament cutter I think it's well worth the additional cost. (but it needs more space for desiccant) Currently planning to wait till the X1 is available at retail, but $1500 for a super-fast auto-calibrating printer than can change it's own filament is a steal. Only take 75 rolls of $20 filament to make the printer cheaper than the consumables.

I've used similar integrated and USB-C connected toolboards with Klipper on my printer. The USB-C cable probably carries 24V and CAN bus. Definitly not something you want to connect to your phone. Otherwise I really enjoyed the more in depth look on the printers internals. Exactly the level of detail I come here for. Funnily enough I was quite hyped for it and backed it initially, but later on pulled my backing. I dont really have doubts about its qualities, but in the end I mostly want a machine to tinker with and this is not it. And I dont print enough parts otherwise to make this machine worth it.

Excellent video! It baffles me as to why they didn’t utilize the infill area of each printed object for the purge tower, this would greatly reduce waste and nobody cares what the inside of their object is colored. If there is excess purge-to-infill, it can be programmed to utilize as much as possible to complete infill and *then* purge the excess remainder out the rear. By weight, it wasted more filament being purged out the rear of the printer than what was utilized for the Catan pieces.

Thanks for doing something a little different with this video! I really liked getting a closer look at the brains of this machine. I have backed it, for just the X1C without the AMS. Right before the Prusa XL was announced, I had a massive issue with my Ender-5 that stemmed from two things: the challenge of getting that printer's bed properly trammed, and the challenge of getting all the different parts of the nozzle properly seated against each other. I was completely fed up, and when Prusa announced a printer that had a one-piece nozzle and a bunch of automation for flow rate and first layer height, I was in. Well, the X1C has all those advantages too. And it is much better set up for printing ABS, which I do a lot off because I find ABS is much easer to join parts and to finish props so they don't look 3d printed. *And* it's doing all that at half the cost. The XL is arguably better set up for multi-colour and especially multi-material printing, but I don't care about that. And yes, the XL has a larger print volume, but the reality is that 90% of what I print will either fit on a 22x22cm bed, or needs a 50x50cm bed. So a 25x25 and a 36x36 bed both have the same usefulness, for me. I don't do multi-colour or multi-material printing; I'm sure if I had an AMS I'd find a use for it but it's not a priority. My current thinking is to buy an AMS in a year or so, when I've saved up more money, but only if they get the filament run-out fail-over feature working, where the printer just switches to the next spool when the first runs out. And there's another advantage to the X1 over the XL: Bambu has acknowledged that this feature would be useful and is working on it, while Prusa has made no indication that this is even possible on the XL. At this point, the only real advantages the XL seems to have are the modular heat bed, which is good; a less wasteful mulit-colour setup (no need to purge with multiple toolheads), which doesn't matter to me; and the reliability of the Prusa name. On the flip side, Bambu clearly has production up and running and has actual printers in hand to share with the world. Unless there's a KS disaster, it's almost certain that even with slow-boat-from-China shipping I'll have an X1C before the XLs are even under production.

Good review on the new beasty!! The one issue i can see is it having to do its test before every print. Unless you can disable this function, it sounds like it will take a bit of time until your print starts even with its speed factored in. Keep up the great stuff. I am still fighting my tronxy A5sa!! Been a nightmare from day one!!

06:49 - You can disable the automated functions on each print if you're confident that it's all going to be fine. If you're only ever printing a single material and doing short prints I imagine that you can turn all of that off. For long prints the additional calibration time at the start is likely worth the peace of mind.

My question is how well the mmu handles more brittle filaments like carbon fiber and how dry can it keep things like nylon and water soluble support. Both seem like they could hinder functional part printing if not taken care of... But so far I'm confident it'll be my new favorite printer
