@Bill Gates why would you hold a phone in the same pocket as keys, oh my God
@rpm016t3 жыл бұрын
General engineering principles would say if you want something to be less brittle and prone to cracking, make the material softer and more forgiving. It seems this is what Apple have done with the iPhone 12. They compromised screens that were hard to scratch, for screens that don’t crack when dropped. I was personally very disappointed with how easily the 12’s scratched
@sherlock333 жыл бұрын
Yeah in engineering world, its Hardness what accounts for scratch resistant
@Omar-kw5ui4 жыл бұрын
As an Engineer I would like to point out that using a material with higher toughness of course will give you a material that can plastically deform to a greater threshold, thus being less brittle and less prone to fracturing. However, this comes at a cost, because materials with higher toughness typically have lower hardness. Lower hardness = less scratch resistant. Not sure how different than regular glass this new "ceramic" apple is using is though. P.s. Using sand paper to test for scratch resistance is a very very bad idea. Sandpaper, is made of the hardest materials out there, almost nothing can resist a scratch from sandpaper. In fact, most of the time your phone gets scratched in your pocket or bag is because of grit/sand particles in your pocket that rub against the phone. And sandpaper is usually made from way harder materials that regular sand..

Chris should have dropped the phone such that it hit the edge of the bricks to the left of the cement walkway, and then let it come to rest on the cement. Your sandpaper "test" didn't really seem to be all that realistic as there wasn't all that much pressure applied IMO. A lot of the other iPhone12 tests I have seen show that despite it being "stronger", the phones case and glass still show damage when dropped from various heights than compared to iPhone 11's dropped from similar/same heights. This is why they make phone cases and screen protectors.

You can’t feel the cracks and I don’t look at the back of my phone, so it doesn’t effect the functionality at all. However, after multiple drops on the back, pieces of glass will probably start falling out, exposing the phone’s internals, and that’s when it becomes a problem. That’s why i wish they’d put the ceramic shield on the back of the phone too. Either that or find a way to make wireless charging work through an all aluminum back. I think the problem with these drop tests is that in actual situations you probably won‘t drop the phone like that. Everytime I dropped a phone there was a little more force involved, like when you trip your phone might fall forward with a little more force than the „test fall“ which falls to the ground without any force; or if it falls from the bed, or you try to grab it when it falls out of your hand, then there is a lot more force. I will not rely on these drop tests too much and will use a back cover, or at least a dbrand skin or something like that, although I absolutely hate to use phones with covers.

Not many people are repeatedly dropping their phones from 9 feet. The main problem I wish they would fix are the micro scratches. Those are extremely annoying. Be nice not to use a screen protector.

mine scratched (tiny little ones) in less than a week without a screen protector. I didn’t drop it or put it in a bag or anything. you NEED a screen protector

Kinda dumb....given (every) company needs to make a product to a price point. Being that it is new, I can see the production costs going down over time making it more feasible to add in future models. Nothing really surprising about that.

I went caseless with my absolutely ancient iPhone 6s after my old rubber case absolutely fell apart and I'm not going back. My phone mostly lives in my purse anyways in its own pocket, so I'm not super worried about scratches. If and when I do upgrade, it's probably gonna be the same deal. No case for me

Very unscientific guys. I would expect a lot more from CNET (no offense intended). The phone never actually landed directly on its face. We all know that these handheld drop tests are totally inconsistent and useless for really assessing the durability of a device or a screen. Please utilize professional testing if you want any credibility in these kinds of reviews. Also, when I see clips of your videos embedded in yahoo articles the CNN video is unable to be enlarged to full screen. CNET videos are the only ones that do not seem to work in yahoo.

Great, I’ll use it naked until I damage the frame and then I’ll put a bumper. Let’s not forget that we don’t drop phones head on like that. Impulse tries to save it. It drops from 2-3 feet high after final touch.

Corning has admitted for years that getting scratch resistancy is much much much harder than getting crack resistancy. People are still looking for a combination of both though. I am not a fan of expensive smart phones at all, but I might make my first exception on the rule and get myself an Iphone 12 mini. I am a network engineer who used to run a repair shop in the past, so by definition I HATE what Apple has done to the newest phones making it impossible to replace parts yourself. Getting the Iphone 12 as a daily driver without protection will be my ultimate test of approving/disapproving the value of expensive phones.

She is being extra gentle while 'testing it'.But when the phones drop or slide on street its not going to be gentle.And she is not showing the result properly to camera.This video is like a apple advertisement..

Drop a gamecube controller on the face of it from 3 feet. I broke my screen after an epic smash bros match and my controller landed on it.
