I felt sorry for Bob Michel. He served in the House for 38 years, never part of the majority. Missed the Speakership by one election.
@finalbossd4 жыл бұрын
Actually, he knew that Gingrich would be elected speaker and chose not to run for re-election because of the way Gingrich remade the Republican Party.
@robertpolityka84644 жыл бұрын
@@finalbossd Gingrich would have ran against Michel for the top spot, whether it be Minority Leader or Speaker. Its better to retire at the top, then to get deposed like a couple previous GOP Leaders, Joe Martin (1959) and Charles Halleck (1965)

How the hell where democrats able to win ! The house for38 years
@robertpolityka84643 жыл бұрын
@@bestproto5117 actually it was 40 years (1955-1995)! Bob Michel was a member of the House in 1957. Many factors contributed to the 40-year Democratic reign of the House..incumbency (and seniority) of members, gerrymandering of Congressional Districts in favor of one party, popularity (or unpopularity) of the President at the time. Also, the South went from being mainly Democratic in 1955 to being mainly Republican in 1995. For example, there was a Democratic Congressman from Mississippi named Jamie Whitten who served from 1941 to 1995. He served as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture for most of that period..and eventually served as Chairman of the full Appropriations Committee. He lost both of the chairmanships in his final term in Congress. After he retired, the Congressional District went Republican. Mississippi went from being solid Democratic State to solid Republican, but Whitten's chairmanships (and the power behind it) helped keep him in office for 53 years.

@orecreeper2128 Жыл бұрын
1 man did not kill bipartisanship. What did was the nation dividing itself into 2 groups with fundamentally different visions for America. The modern left and right have almost nothing in common with each other, have no shared values, and disagree on everything. I guess the only bipartisanship that is left is the establishment supporting more money for politicians, big corps, deep state bureaucracy and globalists :/
