Many, many nights I've spent watching No Reservations as a teenager. In my young, adolescent mind, I was on those trips with him. He took me through Japan, China, The U.S.A, and countless other places. And as an adult, he did the same in Parts Unknown. One of my biggest inspirations in life was Anthony Bourdain. I've never felt close to somebody I've never met, before Anthony came along and changed that. He had a way with words unmatched by anybody I've ever met/seen in my life. He was a genuine, honest, funny, intelligent, well traveled man. His impact on people was, is and will continue to be immense.

As a person that has been dealing with clinical depression for as long as I can remember it’s hard to explain how the world is seen through our eyes. To understand I will try to explain how I see it. And everyone I’ve talked to with depression Agree with. So here goes, We comfort others in their time of need yet can not feel comfort ourselves. We use laughter as a tool to keep others happy yet cannot feel happiness ourselves. We seek to please others without an idea of what pleasure is. As him I sought answers or better yet relief in substance, through alcohol and drugs. This was just a way to cope with the reality of my lack of truly being alive. We breath and exists yet really never feel alive. We feel deep love for those that are important to us in life yet can never feel loved, In our eyes we are a burden to those we care about. We are unable to except that someone can love us because we can’t even like ourselves. We think “ How can you love me? Look at me, I’m so worthless, I’m such a failure! A failure at being normal, at being a person. No matter how successful we may be it never seems that we amount to anything. So, to put you in the mind of our fallen brothers and sisters, we feel as if us being gone is an act of compassion to the ones that matter the most. This is not , in a mind of a person with depression an act of selfishness but an act of love. An act of unburdening those we love from our darkness inside. It’s hard to comprehend how someone could think this way to those that are blessed enough to not have this illness. I’ve been told “ Stop feeling sorry for yourself, you’re young and successful. What do you have to be depressed about?” We don’t feel sorry for ourselves, we feel sorry for the people we love and for putting our burden on them. Much like others with this affliction, I take medicine for it. Medicine alone can not cure you. I find that taking medicine going to counseling and a good support group can help you and save your life.

Laurette LaLiberte Thank you for sharing that. We need to help the world understand. We need to make people realize that “ Clinical Depression” is not a state of mind but an illness. Don't put chefs up on a pedestal like everyone is now doing with Anthony Bourdain. Many of them are great at what they do, but they are not God. Chefs I have met were hot headed, temperamental narcissists. And many of them had serious drug and / or alcohol dependencies. They are human, just like everyone else. And some of the shit restaurant owners / managers get away with in terms of violating labor laws, hiring illegal workers, safety violations galore, etc... defy description. Stop idealizing what is a brutal cutthroat industry. Moreover, stop putting people like Anthony Bourdain up on a pedestal. If any of you even bothered to read Kitchen Confidential, Anthony himself even addresses these issues. Anthony never once claimed to be God. Or a role model. Or perfect.

And no doubt his worshippers and his co-conspirators at CNN will attend the Church set up to sanctify this guy. Their communion will likely consist of an animal that was tormented and killed as an homage to their god.

I know Mr. Bourdain would be appalled at the thought, but his work on Parts Unknown should have put him on a very short list for a Nobel Peace Prize. With this show he reached millions of people and reminded all of us of the common desire we all have to share time and simple, great food with one another. Probably did more to soften people's hearts to other people and lands and cultures than anything most of the recent Nobel recipients ever managed. Rest in peace good fellow.

This one really hurts. My husband turned me on to his shows a long time ago. We spent countless hours watching him and listening. We've watched all his shows from Japan many times over, discussing when we finally have the money, where we'll go based on Anthony Bourdain. If you've ever been depressed, after watching his shows, you could tell he was a tortured soul but we all thought he had already successfully pulled through. It breaks my heart. I'm deeply saddened for everyone that actually knew him because the people who only knew him through TV feel so touched by this horrible news. I can only imagine.

We're from the Philippines (my husband and I) and we watch his shows, even the re-runs of the old ones. He always had a straight-forward, no-nonesense, and yet entertaining way of sharing his stories. His passion for food was one of the things that inspired us to explore and experiment more, to be a traveler and not a tourist, and to appreciate the things we have as a people since some nations who have less treasure whatever they have despite all the hardships they encounter. He seemed like the kind of guy who'd apologize in a heartbeat if he was wrong, and would gladly learn from the people around him without using his name and status to get special treatment. Such a sad thing, taking one's life. May he continue to travel and discover things, wherever he is.

Man.... I feel like I lost a personal friend or like a good ol' uncle or something like that. I freakin' love this dude. Suicide is a sickness. My dad committed suicide in 1983 when I was just 7. I still wonder why. So Mr. Anthony we will always wonder why even in 30 years... Only because we love 💘 you bro. Thank you for bringing us around the world with you. We all felt like we were there right next to you in all your travels. May you now get some much needed rest. ✌ Peace... And we will all meet up on the other side one day.

Dear Bourdain family and Asia, I've never met Anthony, but like so many, today was hard, I've loved him since "No Reservations" I love to travel, but haven't had the priviledge to do it nearly enough. Through Anthony's eye's we were able to see more of our world, and taste each place he went! You will hear this alot: I'm so sorry for your loss, but it's our loss too! A friend I would have truly enjoyed for the Great food and the well traveled stories he could tell! So Sorry!

Every religion that believes god paradise & hell , yes says u go hell for suicide, but remember this man maybe had mental health problems, and we know God forgive the mental people, so please don't judge as it is for God to judge. 2nd he died, gone, so show Some respect for the dead people, hope good for them, and remember you are next 1 day.

The William Wallace quote, "Every man dies. Not every man really lives." It comes to the front of my mind today. Anthony Bourdain truly lived his life and we were so lucky he shared it with us.
@mattkotulski4376 жыл бұрын
I don't know if one was truly living when he takes his own life. Seems his life must have been empty, meaningless, for some time. He probably didn't feel truly living.
@mattkotulski4376 жыл бұрын
So how does that change what I said, unless with a torturing illness one really lives full?
@LIVEINPEACE20236 жыл бұрын
Matt Kotulski That doesn’t mean that he never truly lived.
@MrCeora6 жыл бұрын
Matt Kotulski, the true proof of living is the way in which you touched, changed , or affected the others lives. That being said, I would think his life carries on in another level at least. Also, like the old folk used to say, "Speak their name and they live, if only for a fleeting moment".
@snickelfritz41796 жыл бұрын
Kind of sadly ironic that the mere sound of this man’s voice was so soothing to millions yet he suffered from so much inner turmoil that he saw no other way than to take his own life! I rarely care when a celebrity dies because I usually feel that they never showed their true self to us so how could we be sad at their passing? When I heard the news of Anthony passing away I was pissed because how few people make us feel like the world is a real, organic, and beautiful thing in the land of charlatans. Why is the suicide rate at a record high? Because this new uncaring technological world looks at us as nothing more than a stat on a fucking productivity sheet. How much can you produce? God I pray that someday soon this machine grinds to a halt and the lights go out so we all are forced to notice the stars again. To anyone thinking of prematurely ending your journey please don’t because the fact that the world makes you so sad means that you care so intensely about things. We need more of you to save the rest of us because we are the ones that are truly lost.

I once saw Bourdain sitting on the outdoor patio of Esca in NYC. I was passing by and it was such a moment in time for me. It was past lunch time, and he was there alone. I stopped and could have even said something. But it was enough just to spot him there appreciating his wine and meal. I read his books and watched his shows -- and never imagined we would have to live without his presence in the world. He was so great! I'm missing him all over again this morning.
