I never actually met him, but I feel I knew him. I've traveled the world with him within the walls of my living room. Ate supper with him nearly every night. My 6 yr. Old daughter loves him too. I have still not had the heart to tell her that he passed away. Not only because I know she will be heart broken, but also we are healing from one of my best friends also passing this year. 2018 was a bad year for us. But mainly so she can still enjoy him, the way I used to. Now I watch him and it deeply saddens me to know that he is no longer with us. I never met you, but I feel I knew you and you took me places and taught me things I would never be able to go and do on my own. I pray you are at peace now Anthony Bourdain. When I eat pork and drink I will think of you.

interesting fact about that episode, cnn has done virtually no reruns of that episode whereas all other episodes keep getting rebroadcasted on the weekends. now this is a bit conspiratorial on my part but not that far fetched either: the establishment, of which cnn is a part of, doesnt want you to think of iran as place where any normal looking or happy people live they need you think of iran as a hell hole where women are treated like dogs so that if they ever launch a war they can justify it and ABs episode in iran didnt help them paint the picture they want.

Anthony was a philosopher. Through and through. He was able to take such a simple thing like food and expand it’s meaning past the ability to eat. It’s hard to accept his death, but it was beautiful to see how many adventures he was able to take. Anthony, you’re no longer exploring this world, you’re now exploring another. Rest easy bourdain. Cooking has always been my number 1 love. Anthony was an inspiration to many. So honest. So loving. Always willing to listen. Taking people all over the world to see new places they wouldn’t of seen or food they would of never heard of if not for his show. My heart breaks for his family and his daughter. Ive had deep and lasting bipolar disorder for 25 years. The highs can be fun, but the lows are absolutely crushing. Ive contemplated suicide many many many times. The only thing that keeps me here is my profound belief in reincarnation and in knowing that death is not the end. But a door. And whatever you could not conquer in this life, you will repeat in the next. Your dark side is not something you slay. Its meant to give you a different understanding of existence. Darkness is real. Shake its hand, respect it, and know that the good that exists in you is greater. Its a test used to discover your best self. If you were always happy, you would never stretch. Until you get weary. Stretch. Understand. Empathise. Love. Rest in greatness Bourdain

Not sure anyone can truly understand until they've been there themselves. One of the unfortunate social and societal side effects of this malady. And it is a malady. The first step is recognizing it. Then, fighting it, knowing it's going to be a long, hard battle - possibly lifelong, as you say. The only way to deal with it, I suspect, is to listen to the advice of your friends and stay as close to them as possible.

In my youth I worked for 80 hours a week as a sous, and some years later, the first time I picked up "Kitchen Confidential" I felt like I knew this guy. The rogueishness was especially attractive because it seems to permeate a kitchen working at full speed to make good food. This is only a pale example, but it resonated with me. We served duck a l'orange, and our duck sauce was made from scratch: duck stock, fresh squeezed orange juice, and our secret ingredient -- a big dollop of Grand Marnier. Customers loved it. One day our manager told us to substitute triple sec for the Grand Marnier, said "no one will notice. The Grand Marnier is too expensive!" My chef and I shared a look, agreed to adulterate our fine sauce with crap, and sent him on his way. From then on, whenever we made a new batch of duck sauce, we would serve the manager and the post-lunch wait staff their lunch in a side room, and either I or my chef would keep a lookout on them through the little round window while the other ran behind the bar and poured the big dollop of Grand Marnier into a glass. Then we would run back into the kitchen and make our sauce -- the right way. The people continued to rave about the sauce, the manager thought he was saving money, and we knew we were doing the right thing. It's an insignificant little restaurant story, but I always thought that Tony would have wholeheartedly approved. I will miss him so.

After reading and watching the interviews with Tony last week speaking about his last shoot--the Hong Kong episode, things seem clearer to me. He had tried for years to get his idol, the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle, to appear in an episode. Not only did he appear, but he got behind the camera and actually photographed the entire episode. To add to the serendipity, his director had an emergency illness 2 days before the shoot. He asked his girlfriend Asia Argento to step in and direct it. She did. And all this happened in Hong Kong--Tony's favorite location. It was truly the pinnacle of his career. Could it EVER get any better... I know Tony loved his friends and his family, but I think his career (Not the money nor the fame, but the PASSION for what he did) was his life. He lived life hard and passionatly, yet with great sensitivity, and sometimes that passion can drain you over time--especially when you reach a perceived pinnacle that you fear you may never reach again. I think Hong Kong was, in his mind, as good as it could get, and as good as it was ever going to be.

He was a total inspiration for me. Much if the places I travelled to was because of him. Even when I was posted at the US embassy while I was in the marines, much of the places I chose to go was because he went there. Even all these years later I still watch his shows and remember the guy. One of the things I loved about him was the fact that despite him being more liberal, he was not afraid or antagonistic about meeting with others who thought different. I can say that the world can learn a lot from this guy. He is sorely missed.

Like we were only allowed to see Robin Williams as an actor, so we assumed that that was who he was at all times, making it seems so confusing when someone so visibly happy was actually sad. When I was growing up and trapped alone in a house I desperately wished to escape from, his show helped me leave for hours at a time, opened my eyes to new dishes I could try to make myself and new cultures and history for me to research and learn from. I wish I could tell him how thankful I am that he helped me realize that people, and the stories they have to tell, are the most fascinating and valuable resource this world has to offer. In every country I visit, no matter how far and often I travel, his approach to life, and his philosophy about taking in all the world has to offer, will never be far from my mind, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this.

He was a class on his own. Chef. Philosopher. Traveler. Complicated genius. Drunk and Druggy. but above all a man with a passion for life that was contagious ...truly devastating that he gave up his passion for life by ending his own. Only somebody with deep and dark depression can understand the choice he made. Do not judge him, depression makes you a person who sees NO LIGHT at all. He reached a point where he couldnt take anymore of life. I understand this feeling. I am always suicidal its just a matter of degree. Right now I feel like 30% suicidal but I have been up to 90%. I was never affected by a celebrity's death like Anthony Bourdain's, this one is painful. In these troubled and divided times he was a beacon of hope for me, through his medium he made me feel that there are no bad races, that one should open their hearts and minds to other cultures. He made me feel that it's going to be okay, he was one of the good ones. Now he's gone, and it really hurts. I never knew him personally, but if there's an after life, I hope to share a beer with him, sitting on plastic stools as we eat barbequed pork impaled on bamboo skewers, and share a smile or a bout of laughter. I'll miss you Bourdain.

I tried and love durian fruit because of his show! I eat at Katz Deli anytime I can because of Tony, and whenever I would have out-of-towners visit, I'd take them to Katz and show them a clip of Tony eating there. I always get the Tony classic: pastrami on rye with mustard, sour pickles and a Dr. Brown's cream soda (HIGHLY recommend it). There are few celebs that have hit me hard with their deaths. Alan Rickman was another one who shocked me when he passed. But Anthony Bourdain had me in utter shock. Like Adam Richman tweeted, "Damn it Tony....why?" That's all I think about now. I ate last year at Eric Ripert's 3-michelin restaurant Le Bernardin because I saw Eric on Tony's show and I loved their bromance. I read that Eric was the one who discovered Tony dead. That's horrible!!! We lost an icon for sure.

My brother who was a therapist who passed away used to say that each of us is a walking mosaic, no one part of our lives larger than another. When I think of people like Anthony Boudain who ended their lives prematurely, in his case probably due to suicide, I like to think of that quote, and remember him more for him traveling the world and teaching others about it than for his death and how he died. I have no idea about his poliical leanings, and I know he wasn't perfect and had shortcoimngs as we all do, and what t do know is he opened up the world to many thru his travels and vulnerability, and I appreciate that! Our world today seems to be in disarray. Social Media I think plays apart. Sometimes people think they are never good enough no matter how famous or rich they are. I think the world mourns today together for an outstanding human being who at the same time was as normal as you & me. Peace&love to AB. Rest easy friend.

That has to be the worst age to lose a parent. Not young enough to not know what's happening and not old enough to handle it emotionally (not that anyone can handle losing a parent). I hope the child has a close relationship with the mother at least so she can lean on her in this difficult time.

wow, some people really think that depression is just “feeling a little down.” It’s living everyday with no matter how much or little you have and still not feeling happy or satisfied and feeling constantly drained - its a disease. If you think that you had depression and just got over it, then good for you, but life isn’t the same for everyone.
@LovelyLisaMarie20006 жыл бұрын
Andrew Simoes Tell me about I think of it daily. Been depressed for years. It’s something pills don’t make better. I truly believe there’s no cure. If I didn’t have my fur babies I would have done it a long time ago. I couldn’t leave them because I’m all they have and no one would take care of them like u do. My lil guy suffers separation anxiety and when I left for a month he literally chewed all the fur off his leg. No way I could leave him for good. Some days are bad but I just try to stay busy. It’s the worst disease that’s mentally draining. Plz pray for me.
@thehotsixer16 жыл бұрын
If you truly believe there is no cure, then how could you ever expect to feel better? You see the conundrum you have put yourself in? Yes, pills won't make it better, only you can figure out what will make it better, and then do it whatever it takes to make it better.
@LovelyLisaMarie20006 жыл бұрын
thehotsixer1 You have no clue how it feels, you can’t just change it, it’s not that simple or I wouldn’t have manic depression to begin with. All I can do is Learn to Live with it through my Animals who depend on me. That’s the only thing that makes me function daily, they are my therapy and this is why I don’t talk to my family much because they think there’s a easy solution when that is totally WRONG!!! You can’t understand unless you are in the same boat as me!

Some people don't understand the difference between situational depression and clinical depression.
@JoeKing67.6 жыл бұрын
It's sad what people think,depression is a blind disease, I use to be that happy,funny guy everyone liked,but somehow I ended up having clinical depression and gad(generalized anxiety disorder),I have not gone out in 12 years,once in awhile I would but end up leavi g after an hour,I'm 50 now I was a tuff tattooed guy,now I just struggle,I cry for everything and cry for nothing,I was very active now I don't wanna do anything, if not for my wife and son and my parents, I would end my life,but till this day I have to put my happy mask on and be strong,being depressed and having depression are two different things,I hope people read this so they have some understanding and could support someone they know with depression,I do take meds they help a little but I certainly am not the person I use to be,to all with depression be strong,gotta go I'm getting man tears typing this comment.

I don’t worship celebrities that seems to be the culture of today in an era of Social Media and many not worth their salt. But for Anthony I not only deeply respect but really love the guy because I identify he came from a cooking and food background and his adventures through Food Traveling and bringing you stories as they were through the lens of food. I admired his past, overcoming issues that were dark to him which never happened to me, but I understood and respected him. He didn’t shy of talking about his past, you understood him more. I’ve watched all this travel shows, starting when he was on the Food Network with a Cooks Tour abroad, then when his show moved to the Travel Channel, then it moved to CNN. I didn’t watch every single episode, life is happening, but I watched a damn lot of them. As a Naturalized American who grew up as a kid in a foreign country seeing Anthony’s show meant something different to me as would any show mean to anyone differently. Having spent time in the military living abroad in Asia as well, I understood how in travel food could connect you with people and their culture, my own included. He went to many countries and places, he brought us their culture and told their stories through and over food which helped understand cultures many have never been to. Many people in the U.S. have no friggin clue about the rest of the world outside the borders of this country. Nor do many people ever see the real country of places they travel to only ever staying at some posh resort in some far away destinations. Anthony went to those places that many people traveling don’t often go to. He spent time with and among real locals and in so saw and heard their stories. He help tell us some their stories all through the context of food and sharing food and culture with the locals of that country. That was the appeal of his show to me as someone who also grew up in a different country myself. Because so few Americans have no damn clue about other countries, their cultures, their food or what’s happening in other places with human stories there. He helped tell and craft the stories that many other won’t and don’t have a platform to tell, all through a travel food show. He took us all there, to those places and to stories of people and family in those places. And it was so shocking yesterday when I heard “Remembering Anthony Bourdain” and I immediately thought, wait... you only be remembering someone that has died. Which was when the shock set in. I’ll forever miss the guy and his show and his take on those story he told. It’ll never be the same.

Ardent Dfender you are so right I loved the way he went to the locals for an authentic cultural experience. As a former flight attendant, I must say It does get lonely traveling a lot . Being alone in different cities, jet lag, unfamiliar surroundings etc. will really wear you down. Sometimes its hard to sleep, even in Luxury Hotels. You are often alone with just you and your thoughts in your hotel....traveling for work is hard and can get depressing at times. I remember a Captain of one of our Crews had a wife and a child hung himself in the closet of our Hotel. He was a great guy too, never would have thought he would do that either.I guess no one ever knows what someone is thinking. God rest his soul...We will miss you so much:( Mr No Reservations!

Sort of.... read his upbringing. He was a prep school kid. He attended Vassar College for a few years, later going to the Culinary Arts Institute of America. But, never mind socioeconomic class crap. Believe me it is crap, despite that particular cultural elements in an environment may be influential (or not). I take it that you mean "blue collar type of guy" in that he has that lack of pretentiousness, and he seriously frequented a lot of eateries that are just that.... Good stuff! He's not a snob. But he's all about quality and adventure. He's got that rugged individualist attitude. He's kinda punk like The Ramones he liked so much. Very nice character, true! Missed? Ahhhh, for sure!!!!

Don’t stress the Angry Blackman, he’s just emotional. Understandable. As for his lifestyle and how it equated to his happiness, he could have all that wealth & fame and still be depressed. I think what doesn’t make sense to me is that he had a girlfriend and a daughter to love for... THAT, to me, is what makes no sense.

So glad this atheist Jevv is dead and now getting pounded in the ass for eternity by Satan. He hated and used white people. He said he wanted the white race gone from the planet, and he prevented whites from being on his Houston episode. He was selfish & a psychopath. Pathetic how pseudo-cultured & pseudo-intellectual leftists praise him because of his own pseudo-cultured TV show. That's all these leftists have is their TV, cults of personality on TV and movies, and the State feeding them a bunch of lies through "education" and welfare slave programs.
