The guy that took Pete's bets ..Ron Peters lived across the street from me in an apartment complex about 8 years ago but he's since passed away. I got some of the bookies golf clubs out of the dumpster with his name on them when he threw them out one day just because of the significance of who he was.

4 packs of cigs per day. Just goes to show you that he had as bad an addiction as Pete Rose. Imagine if the only person in baseball who smoked cigarettes was Bart Giamatti? MLB may have told Giamatti that if he continued to disgrace himself and baseball by smoking cigs then Bart Giamatti would have been thrown out of baseball for life just like Pete Rose. He couldn't quit, and when friends asked Bart Giamatti why he didn't try to quit, he simply said that he knew he couldn't. Who made the biggest mistake in their life, Pete Rose or Bart Giamatti?

He had previously had a heart attack before this and kept smoking anyways

If Rose had confessed that he did bet on baseball, he'd have been in the Hall of Fame long ago and wouldn't have been out of the game for that long. Had he humbled himself and apologized, he'd have long since been forgiven.

Betting is becoming more normalized by the day. Bad or good. Rose not making the hall of fame is whatever, but saying he put a stain on the game is ridiculous.

How do you put Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire in now? Imagine their speech at Cooperstown? Bad optics as they say.

@@adamdorgant9454 Giamatti and John Dowd offered Pete, to come clean with everything, and I mean everything. They were not going to charge him with anything. He was however going to have to pay his taxes. Also, they would have paid his gambling debt. He was also told that he would be back in the game in a couple of years, once there was evidence that he was turning his life around. Today, we'd be relishing the fact that he was in the Hall of Fame. To this day, why he lied is beyond me, and to a lot of other people, who did nothing but love him, and support him.

2:45 of this video i just laugh at it each and every time when pete rose says well regardless of what the commissioner said today i did not bet on baseball because we know now what a fib that was, as far as i'm concerned the ban should not ever get removed since the stress of this case factored into why bart giamatti suddenly died like he did.

The ban will never be lifted, even after Pete Rose dies because the permanent ban acts as a great deterrent to other players. Life means life, and it means after your life, as well. Pete is one of the all-time liars in the history of famous people. Think of how many times he publicly lied about it? He still lies to this day. Has to be many thousands of times that he lied about it publicly. It is really amazing.

Stupid is, stupid does. Even after all the evidence that was presented to the comissioners office, Pete Rose denied he bet on baseball. Yet years later, after continuous denials, he finally admitted that he bet on baseball, in part to peddle anything and everything to make a buck. Sad ending indeed for one of the best ball players of all time.
