Ethan Wayne, son of actor John Wayne, reacts to calls to remove his father's name from John Wayne Airport after inflammatory quotes resurfaced from an interview the actor did in Playboy Magazine in 1971.
Democrats want John Wayne Airport renamed after 'I believe in white supremacy' interview resurfaces
(CNN) - Democrats in Orange County, California, are done with The Duke, and they want John Wayne's name and likeness stripped from the county's airport.
The pols cite Wayne's professed support of white supremacy in a 1971 Playboy interview, in which he espoused derogatory views of African Americans, Native Americans and movies with gay characters.
The article went viral in February 2019, but amid calls to take down tributes to Confederate soldiers and others who promoted hateful views, it has resurfaced and serves as the basis for the Orange County Democrats' resolution, which passed Friday.

Good way to start is to stop calling them "celebrities" and go back to the term thespian, and save a term that should be used for people celebrated for their contributions to humanity instead of their contributions to corporate coffers. I also hate the term "influencer" and would prefer "Advertiser/Promoter" as it fits their actions better.

BLM is just as bad as the organizations they riot against. They use BLM as ab excuse to perpetrate their crimes. Every chance they get they riot. pillage and destroy. We know who they are.

Brilliantly said! My Grandfather was white supremacist and very homophobic. I’m gay, so it was incredibly hurtful, and I’ve always been a big supporter of minorities, so I still struggle with it all. He was my hero, my father figure, and I love him so much. He did come to deeply regret his racist past and love others, but he never stopped being hateful towards gay people. I think we all just have to do a lot of editing when it comes to family. Defending his words and actions would NEVER happen. John Wayne’s son agrees with his dad, that’s why he’s defending him. Btw my other side of the family were Italians that came to Mississippi around the year 1900, and around 1915 (my great grandma was 8) an Aunt was raped by a klansman, who then came into my family’s store and bragged about it to my Uncle (who’s wife he’d raped). Well, uncle pulled out a shotgun and took him out. That night my great grandma was awakened by her parents and they left the state and everything they had. The klan lynched any Italian man, woman or child they could get their hands on. My family. So yeah, any minorities fight is my fight. Sorry for all of that, this crap just really makes me nuts. Hope you have a lovely day 💚🙏

BS He was talking about black communists in positions of power that were irresponsible and therefore he does not support. Playboy: Angela Davis [a Communist professor in the San Francisco Bay Area] claims that those who would revoke her teaching credentials on ideological grounds are actually discriminating against her because she’s black. Do you think that’s true? Wayne: With a lot of blacks, there’s quite a bit of resentment along with their dissent, and possibly rightfully so. But we can’t all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.

I think he actually made a compelling rebuttal, but he still admitted his father made bad decisions in the interview. The fact that John Wayne's films generated significant income for native American communities was a valid point, most American cinema just had white actors play indians. @Steve Heston - I have the same question.. "Why do you waste your time"?... You responded with a paragraph the only *accused* but did not "enlighten". Saying something is a lie without producing any facts or examples certainly WAS a waste of your time. I'm a Republican (for lack of better terms) and I'm tired of Trump supporters (versus republicans) constant lack of any "Support" for the President and their inability to argue a point. *TRUMP QUOTE:* *“I’ve got black accountants at Trump Castle and at Trump Plaza. Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys wearing yarmulkes…. Those are the only kind of people I want counting my money. Nobody else… Besides that, I tell you something else. I think that guy’s lazy. And it’s probably not his fault because laziness is a trait in blacks.”* in 1997 he said the quote attributed to him was “probably” accurate. But in 1999 he denied saying it. The "almighty leader" himself is by all evidence a racist and his supporters are not only FINE with that, but they also try to justify it. It may not be conclusive to say consevatives are racist, but it's completely ridiculous to call it a LIE when you can't support yourt staement. Take a look at who our President deems "smart enough" to be around him, Trump’s actions (Not my words) speak the truth. Trump has removed all but ONE black member from his cabinet... He also has NO Hispanic cabinet members even though Hispanics make up the largest minority of this country. 89% Rich White Males... That's who Donald has appointed. ACTIONS folks. Trump Has Confirmed 150 Lifetime Federal Judges (which is ridiculous because he hasn't had time to vet that many), 92% are white with just one black and one Hispanic nominee... Ironically, just a token member of each minority to avoid a caucasian landslide. Another fun fact is that some of the "Judges" he has nominated NEVER TRIED A CRIMINAL CASE as a lawyer or a Judge! Trump would rather appoint totally inexperienced, unqualified white men before experienced blacks & Hispanics for a top Federal position that lasts a LIFETIME. There's your critical thinker. Donald will talk a game and toss the occasional scraps to the minorities that don't affect his life, but I DARE you to find a history of Donald entrusting any personal or professional business to Black or Hispanic men or women. These ate facts. Check them... I don't "KNOW" trump and he's never told me that he's racist, but his ACTIONS lay a damn good foundation of proof. You may say "He's not racist"... That it's all Left-wing "LIES"...What do you know that we don't? Use your "words" and as Daniel has already asked, "Elighten us".

@Steve Heston You're either a master troll or incredibly naive... Ethier way, you deserve a trophy... 1). You say Trump is "an American President, which means he is one President that cares for this country"... Really?... Is that what being an American President means?... You followed that up by saying Obama (Another American President) didn't care for his country... You seem to be arguing with yourself, Steve. 2). Did you actually bring up " Executive orders to further an agenda" when Trump has LITERALLY not only done that but has also threatened further executive orders that would violate your first and tenth amendments of the U.S, constitution? Can we ALSO remember who put the security of this country and its airports at risk by closing the fucking GOVERNMENT down? NOT for fiscal reasons, but for leveraging his own agenda of funding a border wall that he promised you would not pay for! Again, you seem to be defeating yourself here... 3). Your comprehension skills are suffering if you think I said Trump should "hire by color"... The FACT is that he FIRED people (minorities) that were historically competent and replaced them with people who had no experience... Some of which Trump has since fired, and some who had criminal pasts. Even some who are NOW serving jail sentences. My point was that there were QUALIFIED minorities available and Trump filled the positions with friends, family, and unqualified candidates. 4). You care about "Marxist rioting in the streets" and (presumably) the dwindling health of this nation and it's the inability to rid itself of rising COVID numbers... BOTH of these are happening under Trump's watch... This is what happens when a "LEADER" is unable to UNITE his nation and considers it "winning" to divide its people...People won't follow... People won't listen. It's impossible to "LEAD" a nation when 60% of its people won't stand behind you. It's not a new concept... Unless you are arguing for a dictatorship. 5). You claim the leftists want to destroy freedoms when TRUMP has literally done nothing but fight to take your freedoms... From freedom of speech, to rights of States to govern, to right to assemble (I'm not talking about looting), Trump has even forbidden U.S. Citizens to testify in court while also accusing someone using a constitutionally protected "Whistleblower act" as "Treasonous" which is punishable by death... He's had someone dragged from a rally for SPEAKING against him and offered to pay attorney fees for anyone who roughed the guy up! FREEDOMS? Tell me again, who's head is in the sand? It sure seems like a lot, but pick ANY one of my claims and research it. I won't even get into how he's put us at a SEVERE military disadvantage over the past three years. The man has no concept of strategic locations and trading of intelligence. I'm a "republican" by most standards... If you think for ONE MINUTE that Trump won't stamp an "Executive order" against our 2nd amendment right to bear arms the minute we use it for its original intent, (Fighting a tyrannical government) you are crazy! He's already set the precedent of covering his ass with executive orders while wiping it with our constitution... He's already proven that he's willing to use our own military against us... How mush forwarning do you need? Time for YOU to pull your head out of "wherever" you have it planted.

I'm not sure if that really happened. I watched the film, and there was no reaction from Sacheen during her speech (she was obviously not a trained actress if something crazy happened, like John wayne being detained by 6 security guards while actively trying to assault her, I think we would have seen some reaction). I was college educated and had already served three years at the Army National Guard. My father adored him, when i was a very young girl i did too. I grew up watching his movies. After my father died in 2003 my sister said she didn't want any of dad's old movies and books and what not (my father had quite the collection of John Wayne memorabilia) and did i want them. I asked her why she didn't want any and she told me she absolutely hated John Wayne and what a horrible person he actually was. I said i had no idea and began to research. Good lord. I had no idea his true beliefs. I told her i didn't want any of that old memorabilia either. Not after understanding the true man he was inside. I think she wound up donating it all to the local VFW. I've known since 2003 what a racist bigot he was. Shame really. An American icon but a racist bigot none the less. I firmly believe his name should be removed from the airport. When I hear young folks complaining about how badly they are treated, I shake my head with mild disgust. If they think they had it bad, they need to remember what those old folks went through, gather up their creativity and courage, and make a way for those who are coming up. So what if their teachers weren't black and didn't, couldn't, or wouldn't teach them these values; so what if their parents were disinterested or absent, you young folks owe it to be better than your own expectations. It's not just about money, it's about soul. And that's what makes us human.

tallaganda83 there is a great deal of POTENTIAL honesty in your comment. IF your grandfather WAS a racist, which was still VERY wrong but a lot more common in his day, and you are just being thankful that the world will never get to find out so you never have to answer for him, guess what; you’re just being a human grandson. You’re not here defending his views or the honor he would have destroyed himself like John Wayne’s son. You’re thankful you never have to. That’s the best a rational thinking modern day descendent can do. You can still love and remember your grandfather fondly, while being embarrassed by some indefensible portion of who he was. Whether I am right or wrong, I’m glad your grandfather wasn’t famous. You can remember him in peace 😆. God bless YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

As was rightly pointed out, by the time John Wayne made these comments in 1971 the Civil Rights movement was well under way. He himself had ample opportunity to be "educated" to the history of white affirmative action and black subjugation in this country. Especially ironic given his charge that he'd remain a white supremacist until the black population became sufficiently educated. He's no hero.

Jon Underland thank you! Being a “product of his environment “ is such a lame defense. There were plenty of white Americans whom did not have the same view as John Wayne. I would even go as far as saying even more. He either did not educate himself or he did not care about the facts but either way he was a coward.

Casting a movie at that time was not John Wayne's job. There wasn't much of a pool back then in Native American actors though many did indeed appear. The issue for directors was that if a real Navajo was needed for a part he might get Cherokees, Cheyennes, or other tribe members. That was a problem. It was difficult to be accurate & get the right Native American. Especially in a lead role. The German actor Henry Brandon played Scar in The Searchers (he also played Barnaby in March of the Wooden Soldiers). To be in a major film you needed to be a member of SAG/AFTRA & many Native Americans weren't. They did get minor roles (The Outriders -- 1950 real Native Americans were cast). And Wayne was one of the actors (I guess you didn't know this) who worked with Jay Silverheels (Tonto) to create an acting pool of real Native American actors for work in films. The Italian who played an Indian for decades was Iron Eyes Cody, he was married to a Native American, adopted 2 Native American boys. He did so much good on behalf of the Native American community including charitable ones they accepted him as one of their own. They even honored him in 1995 & presented him with a headdress -- something they seldom give to a non-Native American. There was no discrimination but just an availability issue. By the way, technically, Johnny Depp never should have played a Native American in the film The Lone Ranger if a Native American actor was available. Many were. If you want to criticize a little about casting a non-Native American -- focus on an issue like that.

It's about responsible people supremacy. John if you keep them down forever they will never as a whole obtain the degree of responsibility and respectability you deem necessary. Once they reach your standard you will simply move the goalposts. Simply living in lead infested homes takes a big toll on IQ and well as going to substandard schools and eating substandard meals (IQ is plastic and not fixed in either individuals or groups). Add Iodine to your diet and your IQ will improve. Maybe this accounts for the Japanese and Nordics being so smart.
