Curious, I saw a video a few years ago where the driver asked the checkpoint officer his reasonable articulable suspicion was that he (the driver) was not a citizen, and the patrol officer insisted; the supervisor was eventually called, the driver refused to go to the spot for further interrogation and said he'd like to exercise his right to travel within the USA unimpeded without answering questions or proving anything because he in innocent until proven guilty in a trial by his peers. The supervisor insisted; the driver invoked his 4th and 5th Amendment rights, he told the supervisor to check US Fed Law 18, Chapters 241 and 242 (Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law). They copied his license plates and told him to leave.

What are the things a person doesn't have to do? SCOTUS makes it clear in Florida v Royer that a person approached by law enforcement need not answer question and may decline to listen to them (460 US 498)

These checkpoints have been going on for a long time. I traveled back and forth between Canada and the US frequently between 2007-2014 (i.e., way before the Trump clown act) and was stopped quite a few times 80 miles south of the border. As a US citizen and veteran, I always had more trouble coming into my own country than the one which gave me a very inexpensive university education at a top-notch university. Thanks Canada!

I live in central Indiana and my son manages a drugstore. One of his regular customers was frantic over a checkpoint in Chicago. She said ICE had arrested her family members because they didn't have IDs with them and her children were left in Chicago with a just babysitter. They were driving to Indiana to visit relatives. It's a four and half hour drive from there to Canada.
