While Israel is the largest target for US foreign aid, the US isn't the only -- or the largest -- source of funding for their military. In 2023, Israel's defense budget was $27.5 billion, and only $3.8 billion of that came from the US -- just 13.8%. Sure, taking that away would sting a lot... but it's not enough to really stop anything. And worst case, it could push them to seek closer relations and support from places that aren't on the same page as the US, policy-wise, which could just cause the Netanyahu administration to double-down. I don't envy Biden on this... no matter what choice he makes, a large and vocal group of Americans are going to be upset with him.

@@olencone4005 I guess at the point of the US withdrawing support it would also mean that the US would stop vetoing UN votes condemning actions Israel is taking, so unless another country with veto power stepped in, Netanyahu doubling down could run the risk of Israel becoming a pariah state and he already has protests within Israel calling for him to step down/ hold an election so those would likely grow. But I also don’t think that should be his first worry, it should be that the US is losing credibility on the world stage by continuing to supply (even if only partially) an army that seems to be clearly disregarding any limitations (don’t commit war crimes) we have placed on their use.

Politics is often more about the behind-the-scenes mind games and less about more direct action... which is especially sad considering how many Palestinian civilians are caught in the crossfire every day in the meantime. But if we make the wrong move, it could shift things in a direction that would just make it all the worse for them... so Biden is forced to lightly poke the bear (with things like all these public statements or singling out a specific unit for aid restrictions) and see how it reacts until he finds the right pressure point. If it works, international support and all those protests inside Israel will grow and gain enough influence to force Netanyahu to change course.

I want to explain to people why what he said was highly questionable, and honestly shocking. I’ve heard of Morehouse before. I grew up in the black church. If anyone has been to the church, we know that Israelites are God’s chosen people in the black community and the land isn’t supposed to be divided up. This man goes to the black church and openly calls for a two-state solution and dividing up the land, which goes against what many at Morehouse have likely learned. This is an example as to why it is fair to say that Mr. Biden isn’t prepared for the job. He could at least pretend to know what’s in the Bible when visiting a Christian school.
