@Gadzonka If you want to get in to the weeds on definitions, perhaps you should do some more reading on ULA. ULA is a joint venture between Boeing and LM, not an alliance. In a joint venture, both companies own a share in a new legal entity. In an alliance, generally speaking, no new legal entity is created. In the video, the reporter made it sound like Boeing has nothing to do with ULA other than contracting launches, which simply isn't true. Boeing has a significant financial interest in ULA.

I don't buy what the announcer has to say. This is a coordinated effort between capsule and rocket. Everybody is in it together. 4.3 billions dollars to scrub at least two flights and four years over schedule. Even beyond that you have a rocket with a helium leak - a leak that they chose not to fix. I understand problems but I also understand astonishingly poor management. Top management that was terminated and paid a bonus of nearly 33 million dollars.

He didn't know why the count aborted, but he did say why it has to wait 24 hours: the launch pad, affixed to the Earth, has to rotate until it's under the orbit of the ISS again. Only when the launch pad is in the plane of the ISS's orbit can the rocket launch, if it wants to get to the ISS.

The only known leak in the rocket is helium, which is a thoroughly inert gas. However, it is odd that they have to sit on top of the 'bomb' and board and de-board a fueled rocket. SpaceX chose the opposite strategy: board the astronauts, enable the launch abort system, fuel the rocket, launch. Or, abort, de-fuel the rocket, disable the launch abort system, de-board the rocket. It seems naturally safer that way, but NASA's old guard was strongly against it, apparently because it's always been done the first way.

NASA had nothing to do with it. Congress mandates what NASA will spend money on, how much it will spend, and how it will be spent. And when NASA testified through Congress of the cost Plus contracts weren't working, and it was making the cost unsustainable, Congress ordered NASA to keep using cost Plus contracts for artemis. Luckily for us, Boeing didn't get a cost Plus contract for starlighter. And they are VERY over budget.

"Now that Jeff Bezos’s space flight company Blue Origin has lost a multibillion contract to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Congress is prepping the ground for Bezos to win a contract anyway, ordering NASA to make not one but two awards. The order would come through the Endless Frontier Act, a bill to beef up resources for science and technology research that’s being debated on the Senate floor this week. An amendment was added to that legislation by Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., to hand over $10 billion to NASA - money that most likely would go to Blue Origin, a company that’s headquartered in Cantwell’s home state." Now, the urine has to be stored on board in containers. In other words, Starliner's arrival at the station tomorrow couldn't come at a better time, and ground teams scrambled to make a switch ahead of launch. A replacement pump was quickly swapped into Starliner’s cargo. The pump weighs about 150 pounds, so the team removed two suitcases from Starliner carrying clothes and toiletries such as shampoo and soaps handpicked by Wilmore and Williams. There is a contingency supply of generic clothes and toiletries on the space station that the astronaut duo will use instead for their short stay, Weigel said. The mission teams also took a close look at Starliner’s parachutes after one parachute on Blue Origin’s recent suborbital crewed flight failed to fully inflate. Starliner uses components that are similar to that parachute system, Stich said. Blue Origin shared flight data with Boeing and NASA, and after assessing Starliner’s parachutes, the team deemed them “good to fly.”

There are 3 redundant racks of ground control systems that sequence the launch in a building at the base of the pad. One of the rack's printed circuit that controls the release of the rocket from the pad was slow (6 seconds) and out of sequence with the other two identical redundant cards. The three systems are required to be in sync before a launch can proceed. Since the systems are at the base of the rocket and it's fully loaded with propellant they have to detank before they can access the rack to troubleshoot. They have spare cards/circuits but the problem may be a power supply or network problem. It's going to be three hours before the building is safe to enter and troubleshoot

Its funny comparing SpaceX to ULA/Boeing... Col Hadfield is very used to NASA/ULA/Boeing delays so no big deal right? However its extremely costly to scrub. All the meanwhile, SpaceX is launching seemingly everyday like a well oiled machine.

Boeing is having a hard time making airplanes. I sure as hell wouldn't trust them to make a rocket right now.

While the ULA has been messing around with this rocket for months, SpaceX has been launching more than 2 or 3 rockets a week. Perhaps NASA should try launching the capsule on top of a Falcon 9.

After troubleshooting the issue in May, the space agency said a helium leak recently found within the spacecraft service module did not pose a threat to a mission. Rather than making a replacement to fix the leak, the teams decided that the helium leak is small enough to be manageable, Stich said. During the launch countdown Saturday morning, mission teams monitored the leak, and so far, no issues have been reported. The long-awaited first crewed spaceflight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft has been scrubbed for today, after a hold occurred minutes before its window for liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, this afternoon. The automatic hold was triggered by the computer that launches the rocket, which stopped the countdown clock. Two NASA astronauts - Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams - have now exited the capsule and returned to crew quarters. The mission comes after years of development and costly setbacks for Boeing's Starliner, which aims to compete with SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. When the mission ultimately launches, Wilmore and Williams are expected to spend one day in orbit before docking with the International Space Station.
