I'm a 4000 hour commercial helicopter pilot. The AA plane was doing what is was supposed to be doing. It had the right of way. The helicopter is capable of slowing or diverting. The video shows them at the same altitude. At night is easy to see aircraft lights. At LAX there is a helicopter route in front of the runways but it is not a free for all. Multiple times I have been told to hover in place, wait for the fixed wing to pass in front of you. Constantly in my career I have had to give way or make room for fixed wing. Don't forget there were two helicopter pilots and a crew chief on board the helo. That makes three eyes in the helicopter. Then another two in the AA plane. Military aircraft normally use another radio band but that does not disallow them to communicate with the tower. My take is the responsibility sits with the helo.

It's from the viewpoint of the video that is widely circulated. Yes. But bare in mind that they were moving in 3-D space. The airliner pilots would have been given a vocal warning from the GPWS to pull up. They would have had to change configurations really fast and abort and follow the STAR instructions that are on the plate of the airport. They usually brief it more than once during a flight, one of which is before landing.

I am having a hard time understanding why the army helicopter was allowed to fly so close and low of the approach end of the runway.
@christopheblanchi47776 сағат бұрын
The jet was cleared for landing and in final, the helicopter had no business being there. Why anyone cleared that military helicopters to cross an active final at a busy airport? These aircrafts were below 1000 feet, TCAS is inactive then, the plane had no reason to look out anywhere than in front of itself. This is fully controlled airspace and the tower is responsible for insuring aircraft separation. If the military wants to fly in a CTR, they need to behave just like all the other planes and get the same exact clearances. There is no reason why military aircraft should have any different clearance mechanisms.

The other report I've watched says the airplane changed the original landing plan, so they could land in different runway for some reasons. The question is, does the change communicated properly to other aircrafts around? I think we have to wait for the investigation result.
@epyoutube52185 сағат бұрын
@CaraVerde I think it was related to the high winds reported in the area. It was very windy and I think they can sometimes change normal runways and normal procedures. My guess is helicopter was expecting a "business as usual" routine and that's not what happened. Possible error on helicopter pilot or on the tower for not relaying runway landing changes due to wind. Just my un-educated guess. They say most crashes have more than one contributing factor though. It's probably more than just related to that. There are usually at least two contributing factors. Such as tower not relaying change and helicopter pilot assuming airplane position instead of verifying. The helicopter probably does these night training maneuvers at one of the busiest airports all the time (not sure why that's even allowed, yet another contributing factor) and posdibly the helicopter pilot had certain expectations and helicopter didn't confirm.

I am a retire Commercial pilot/ flight instructor from Australia. What a lot of BULLSHIT! The commercial jet was doing exactly what it was told to do. These aircraft are flying in CONTROLLED AIRSPACE! The military helicopter was flying visual flight rules (see and avoid). The helicopter was asked by the controller " do you have that aircraft in sight?", the helicopter answered that they did. The controller said "pass behind that aircraft"! Clearly the helicopter DID NOT have the aircraft insight. The two aircraft were on different frequencies, so the jet was totally unaware of the presence of the helicopter! The helicopter WAS aware of the jet! The jet was a 400 feet on final approach, totally focused on landing their aircraft and totally unaware of any potential conflict in CONTROLLED AIRSPACE! The arrogance of the current administration is reflected by the arrogance of these military pilots, flying in a VERY busy Controlled airspace. Apparently the "military" turn off their ADSB because they do want people to see where they are! What a great idea in the midst of one of the busiest airports in America while flying a course that conflicts with published instrument approaches. America is also in the midst of a pilot and controller shortage as an aftermath of the covid outbreak. There is a problem with the experience level of many controllers in the country. This is not THEIR fault. But let's just keep cutting government funding to these vital agencies. What the FUCK is wrong with basic common sense in America! This was caused by a lack of adequate funding of the basic infrastructure of providing funding in combination with the arrogance of the military, that the rules do not apply to them! PAT25 had previously reported the CRJ "in sight" and requested visual separation. The tower controller approved visual separation. When PAT25 didn't appear to de-conflict the tower asks again if traffic is in sight and to pass behind the CRJ. Unfortunately, PAT25 probably visually acquired a different aircarrier that was on final to Runway 1 and was focused on that traffic. Additionally, PAT25 was supposed to be at or below 200' on ROUTE 4....he was at 350'.

They hit under the 800ft mark 😮 I don’t think any maneuvering could be done at that altitude. Tragic accident.
@TheAccidentalViking6 сағат бұрын
The helicopter was supposed to be under the 200ft mark. They were told there was a plane and they identified it wrong. Maybe 'training' boys in deadly military toys should be done out of the commercial flight range.
