The division in congress really started in the mid 90's when Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House and ordered the Republicans in congress to stop hanging out with Democrats. He wanted them to go home, to their districts every weekend. Prior to that, Dems and Reps would stay in DC and spend weekends together, going to the same parties, same restaurants. They played softball together... and talked. The two sides were friends, Americans. Gingrich changed that.

It's pretty simple actually... When the left decided that Trump was a threat to their marxist, socialist, anti-American anti-freedom view of the world, they used whatever tactics they could to smear him and supporters, effectively polarizing the country politically and making it socially "acceptable" to hate the other side. I squarely blame the dems on this

Obama was elected to deliver "hope and change". But he had no intention of delivering either. He was just a genial, charming corporatist who worked for CitiGroup and had absolute no desire to deliver any kind of New Deal, which the country was crying out for. Sanders would have tried to do so in 2016, but he was stomped by the DNC. So although Trump and the MAGA Republicans are the immediate menace, it's the failure of Democrats to aim for anything more than status quo corporatism that has really led the USA to this point.

Sometimes I like- ok white libertarian man blah blah, and other times I’m like- oh wow, I didn’t know that/think about that/etc. My life has changed for the better watching Bill Maher’s show- not because of Bill Maher himself, but because of the opportunity to hear different viewpoints that allow me to hone in on what I think about the world based on hearing different people sharing their different ideas, life experiences, knowledge and opinions. I live in a town where people do not want to hear opposing viewpoints and it frustrates me because our little city is having many issues because there cannot be a consensus about how to move forward as discussions of varying beliefs are virtually impossible. This is true and wise. However, it's hard to compromise with people who won't listen to you, don't know anything about your situation yet have strong opinions about things you do which don't affect them or anybody, and actively tear down your humanity. E.g. you can't ask trans people to please be trans only where no one can see them, or ask black people to be satisfied that they're allowed to vote, and stop complaining that they still experience systemic racism.

Polarization seems to be rampant on one side. Not saying it's not on the other, but one side is way more vocal. And, it's not hatred or negativity to separate/divide myself from the extremists in this nation; it's self-preservation. How can I be friends or date someone or listen to someone try to justify their support of a rapist? Or someone who supports the mistreatment of "other" human beings? Or who caused/supported the taking of bodily autonomy away from half the country? Or who supported the day those supporters threatened to unalive people in our nation's Capitol, and wiped their feces on walls? That's just a COUPLE of things off the top of my head, fresh in my mind. If one supports this guy who wishes to emulate Putin and Xi and Orban, there is nothing going to bring us together. That man has to disappear in order for this country to heal. Maybe then the "radical" idea of ACCEPTING others for who and what they are - as their TRUE Lord and savior intended - can happen. Agree to disagree happens today in my conversations with people who believe in it. But there are some who just will not see.

For the past 7,000 years, there has always been a struggle between the Nomads (Rural folk) and the City Builders (Urban folk). The Nomads are connected to the processes that are required for LIFE to happen. City Dwellers are connected to existential realities, that create demand for the Nomads productivity, and this provides Economic potential. Works great, until the City Dwellers begin to tell the Nomads, how to do the job...that they've been doing for thousands of years. These 2 worlds can only exist side by side; However, they CAN NOT exist as one and the same. There must be TOLERANCE, for the system to function. Nomads must be allowed to be...nomadic, and City Dwellers must be allowed to live existentially. This is why the Electoral College is so important. It provides Nomads the required political protection, against and ever increasing City population, and a shrinking Nomad population. Respecting this boundary is what makes us great, and not divided.

@@theCommentDevilOn Common Sense! It seems that Common Sense has become a super power! So many people don't use facts to make common sense decision. They use an emotional response, a reactionary response, rather than thinking through an issue and formulating a better, smarter, fact-based response.

Uh... what? I'm a Viet Nam war baby, so clearly I wasn't there, but my Viet Nam Vet Dad and all pro-military/pro-soldier protestors were very much attacked viciously by anti-war protestors back then. There are award-winning photographs of the ironic violence of anti-war protestors. On that front, not much has changed: Protests are controlled mobs with a barely controlled mob mentality. That may be a good thing, sometimes, but the monster is always there lurking beneath the surface of even the most peaceful protests.

There was "good people" on both sides. (I can't believe I just said that!) Anyway, what we have today we didn't back then, is wall to wall video coverage. Now the crimes are much harder to cover up and the lies much more easily exposed. That includes all the 'infiltration' by the FBI into left and right wing groups in the 60s and 70s. There was violence on both sides. The pro-war folks hated the hippies, and the hippies saw some of the pro war types as Nazis and bootlickers for Uncle Sam. Both sides also made excellent points, though being an 'old hippie' myself, I still have to agree, war is only ever a last resort option.

I honestly believe that the worst thing that has happened to society is the internet and social media. I believe it would have been ok with if the internet was accessible via schools, libraries and even corporations. It would be more of a controlled environment. But it's accessible from any device any location with no real filters in place. People have been relegated to socializing behind a keyboard and a smartphone. No real face-to-face conversations. So many things have suffered because of social media. Although technology has progressed and matured, humanity has not kept pace with it.

Agree. Complicated debate. I think the readily available information/disinformation is what makes our country so polarized. Too many people watch only media that supports their thinking. I always remind people that there used to be a magazine, The Week, which published political articles that covered right and left equally. It wasn’t about party affiliation, but information. I wish people would take the time to do research. It could be as simple as subscribed to a couple different right/left/progressive/MAGA news sources. We are a country of free speech and ideas. Don’t remain ignorant when there is so much credible information out there.

I generally agree; as originally invented the internet was used for sharing research. The lack of Truth is disappointing. However the proliferation of the internet has allowed the common person to become a author, comic artist, and such. (IE: Webcomics, self-published books) Which I think is a very good thing, not allowing corporation sole control over the (fiction) media. allowing new ideas in
