One of those victims was Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero. He denounced state repression and helped mothers find their detained or murdered children. Roberto D’Aubuisson, a death squad leader, ordered Romero’s murder. Romero was shot in the heart as he said mass on March 24, 1980. A month before, Romero had sent President Carter a letter, pleading with him to stop U.S. military aid to El Salvador. Romero received no response.

That's because a murderous gang member is unlikely to be persuaded by human rights groups. They have something to say when their voice might make a difference. Common sense.

I don't care if you are Uncle Sam or the uk. I realize that when a small nation tries to implement tough solutions, here comes human rights activists , telling you about sanctions this and that , but it's not your people that's been slaughtered like wild animals. Yet you are the same one that will put out data of level 4 travel Destination warning your own citizens not to travel to. It's damm if you do or damm if you dont. Tougher punishments deter criminals from committing vicious acts. There is no way you can tell Singapore how to run their country, so why do you want to tell us how to run ours. Look, I get why Bukele is popular, he’s doing one thing that my people have suffered through for many years and I’m saddened and heartbroken by all the innocents that have been murdered, BUT it is definitely coming at a cost. How many innocent people have gotten arrested and detained in these prisons? That’s a data the government has not and possibly will not ever release. I’ve had a family member jailed simply for having a small tattoo and has not been released since the emergency order was placed 2 years ago. On top of that, medicine is becoming more scarce and food prices have exploded for the people of El Salvador. Cheap for an American yea, but not for them. Taxes have exploded as well, and the loans Bukele got to purchase all those bitcoins have not been repaid. This country is realistically on the verge of going bankrupt and if he doesn’t pay it soon, how will he continue to run the government, or at the very least pay the soldiers who are arresting and detaining the prisoners? Bukele took a desperate move, but I pray to god that this doesn’t come at a cost to my people who are doing their best to live a normal life. That said, I’m shocked Trump would throw Bukele under the bus like that haha, Bukele was at this year’s CPAC!!!

Let’s please take note that Venezuelan gangs now are the old Salvadoran gangs. This president took action and went against the grain and strong handed the gangs. Let’s state the fact that the democrats have condemned his style of reform….

I cycled through El Salvador, mostly along the coast, in 2013. I loved this country, but there weren't many tourists. I didn't feel unsafe, but Santa Ana was sketchy after dark. I'd love to return for a visit, maybe next winter.

I’ve been so impressed seeing El Salvador’s progress. The president has done such an amazing job. Would not have thought one guy in charge could’ve made the murder rates go down so much.

Since you CNN are covering the immigration story then why are you not following up to include how well the United States is doing on immigration. Shiw both sides of the story.

we should have bunk beds like that too for our prisons so we can put more people in it instead of letting repeat offenders still roaming the streets on low or no bail

@CNN Thank you for this news investigation!! Indeed, my mom and others in our family who've lived in the US since the 90s are buying land in El Salvador in preparation to returning to the homeland. It's amazing and emotional for us to finally return to a nation we never thought would be safe or prosperous. Now, El Salvador us safe and there is opportunity! Google opened an office in San Salvador earlier this year and other companies are seeing investment opportunities in this once violent country. The human rights groups NEVER spoke on behalf of the thousands of citizens that the gangs killed. NEVER. Now, they are saying that Bukele has violated human rights because gangsters are encarcerated. You tell me, whose rights are we really talking about? I believe that the innocent citizens' rights trump those of murderers. Anyway, thank you again for this great story and showing the truth. ❤🎉
