As early as 1903, the USA gave Panama the promised political independence from Colombia in a bloodless coup. This set the course for the canal construction. The Americans initially learned nothing from the French mistakes. They began construction work with the same problems: the workers kept dying, from malaria, yellow fever, and dysentery. Of the planned 20,000 workers, only 3,000 showed up, and as the epidemics spread, the survivors ran away - in 1905, work had to be stopped for the time being. Astonishingly, by the end of the 19th century,
