When I flew to South Korea my plane ticket alone was over 1,200 dollars. I'm guessing this guy didn't have a job that would pay for such a trip. If he was any decent kind of son his mother could have also guilted him into not going. I live in South Korea right now and, before I left the U.S, my mother made me promise that I would never visit North Korea. I will remember Otto for the wonderful young man he was, and his loving parents who dealt with this nightmare with love, dignity and grace. The evil, corrupt regime in North Korea will never redeem itself for what they have done to Otto and countless others in their own state. I'll bet there are lots of Iraqui mothers who lost children as a result of us "bringing democracy to the region" that share her views about the damage states can do to civilians. Bombing NoKo and killing more civilians isn't going to make her pain go away; she should be grateful that the US is pursuing diplomacy. If she needs more civilian sacrifice to get over the fact that her vandalizing kid didn't survive NoKo custody, she should take a look at the number of civilians the US has killed (and still is) in the Middle East for the past 17 years. It's a staggering number, we're involved in 7 wars RIGHT NOW which are costing civilians their lives (at tax payer expense) and she should stop hinting that we need to be involved in 8. Her grief is legitimate, but she sounds irrational and self-involved. If the way she's acting now is indicative of her parenting style then no wonder her son didn't have enough sense to stay home or at least NOT VANDALIZE North Korean posters like an idiot.

My son got a ride home from his assistant football coach his senior year. They were T boned by a drunk driver and hit a guardrail and tree head on at 65 MPH. Almost every bone in my sons face was broken. 2 agonizing months in ICU. Dozens of surgeries and massive face reconstruction. It was an unbearable two years but he’s recovered with some memory issues. Almost EVERY bone in his face broken and shattered, his head was twice normal size and I wouldn’t have recognized my own son. A MONSTER? My kids could never look like MONSTERS. Even had my son been burned which often happens in accidents like he survived, he could never look like a MONSTER. No human being that’s been seriously injured resembles a damn monster. Something is WRONG saying that about your boy.

Cindy....you should've used your voice to strongly deter your son from going to North Korea in the first place. Your son wasn't the first American held hostage. You and Otto certainly should've known things go sideways fast for Americans they capture. You go to the press to denigrate Obama and Trump but you couldn't stop him from going to North Korea. If you had taught your son how to conduct himself properly when in a foreign land with brutal laws, he would be alive as well. U.S. law wont protect your irresponsible son in a foreign country. US diplomatic efforts don't go far in hostile dictatorship. The US State Department warned people that if you go to North Korea, you are on your own. What part of that did Otto and yourself not comprehend? She speaks out of both sides of her neck. She and her husband bad mouthed President Obama for not doing enough to get her foolish son set free. Then, she criticizes Trump for conducting diplomacy with North Korea because of how they treated her son. Not enough diplomacy or too much diplomacy? Her view of foreign policy revolves around her naive and reckless son. A whole nation's foreign policy built off of her son's fate. Not to sound callous but Otto played a stupid game and won stupid prizes. Actions have consequences. The best thing he could've done is stayed home if he doesn't know how to conduct himself like an adult. You can get by being foolish at home but many places abroad don't play that game.

I deeply regret what happened to Otto Warmbier and hope that his loved ones will one day be able to live with their grief. His death is a tragedy. But I am an ex-soldier who served in some of the nastier countries on this Earth and this compels me to ask a very simple question: What in the world was Warmbier doing in a country that hates us as a civilian tourist? Look, there are places in this world you should not go no matter how young and idealistic you are, and *very* high up on that list is North Korea. People are 'detained' in that festering sore for political reasons every year. Their laws are so draconian that they make the PRC look like they respect human rights. So yes, Otto Warmbier died because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the kid put himself there on purpose. I'm sorry for his family, but that's just how I see it.

Sad but I have questions, did he break N Korean law? Who would travel to N Korea for a vacation? Who paid for his trip? Is he so important that the North would use him as a hostage?
