Here in Melbourne Australia, we remember the 2008 Black Saturday in the area of Kinglake, another freak of nature that started with temperatures of 46C combined with high winds. In the end, 120 people died, 414 were injured, 450,000 hectares burned, 3500 buildings were destroyed and an estimated one million wildlife was lost. The day after, as I walked through the devastation, I was numb from the force of the fire that left nothing standing. It is important to realise that when nature strikes that hard, there isn't much the authorities can do. Here, a 30 metres high wall of fire swepts through the area, which fortunately was slightly away from densely populated areas. We hope that the people from LA stay strong and get through it with a minimum loss of life. Things can be rebuilt but people cannot be brought back to life. This LA area is prone to fire so hopefully, there will be new designs and new plans to avoid this disaster from striking again. Rather than thinking about fire protection for individual houses, it may be time to implement sprinkler systems for entire streets. Since we can have remotely operated CCTV cameras, why can't we have remotely operated fire fighting equipment?

I have now heard of 3 deaths in the LA fires who were people with disabilities. James Woods basically saved an 94 year old man with dementia, who was left behind by his caregiver. It is UNFORGIVABLE to leave the most vulnerable people in our communities left alone in a crisis. There should be a system in place that identifies the elderly and disabled, and where they are living so that they can be helped in emergencies.
