"Buffalo Calf" appears to be based on a historical figure known as Buffalo Calf Road Woman, of the Cheyenne. She was a contemporary of the legendary Crazy Horse, and fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn. Cheyenne tradition holds that she was the one to unhorse General Custer during that battle. ...Though that would have put her well after the Golden Age of Piracy, which had ended more than a century before the historical Buffalo Calf Road Woman was born. Maybe it's best to take a game about pirate talismans turning people into rats with a grain of salt, rather than as a fully sourced historical record.

This game just seems like an OXboxtra madlib. It's a _pirate_ (Andy) game with _cute animal characters_ (Ellen), some armed with _Dark Magic_ (Jane), where you have _Dark Souls_ (Mike) exploration options, but be warned you may experience _skill tree regret_ (Mike) or existential dread when encountering _spider_ (Ellen) bosses. As a ratroidvania the usual advice applies: _Don't be a Dob_ (Luke).

There's a Japanese female samurai with a naginata?! Now I'm more than curious about when and where I can play this intriguing game that definitely gave me Rescue Ranger vibes just from the title card! (It's not a spear as it's slightly curved much like the swords it's based upon and it's not a pole-arm/glaive as there's no real axe-like shape or sharp hook for snagging armor/people in a fight to get them in range of other blades) Though the naginata's origins are a little fuzzy, it was used mostly in warfare by common soldiers before it became a more sophisticated martial art for women. Usually nobility meant to guard their house during crisis. Even better is the inclusion of a Chinese 'ghost', really rounds out the cultural mishmash of the Pirate Age.

@@leafandryly Well, it's about the only bit that is! But basically, pirates would take whoever could sail and were willing to have a share of the risk and rewards. So it's not too weird to see four different nationalities in one boat. Pirate History Podcast is a good bite sized history lesson. He's just started on ancient pirates too.

This game claims to be set on the Irish coast and the four playable characters are a hollywood native American, a british/american coloniser, a Trinidadian slave, and a token asian warrior stereotype all working for an english with the goal of getting a pardon from that english who in all honesty likely deserves what ever happened to him. Not one Irish player character, that stage Irish merchant and granny are better let slide without comment or the expletives needed to elaborate would have this comment shadow banded by KZbin. Who's dumb idea was this game. If you cannot incorporate your setting in your narrative why not set it on the American coast and swap out the witch for a voodoo priestess. At the very least that would fit better with the characters backgrounds.
