Well you said you didn't raise her this way, but, you did raise her, and she did this. You really should take some responsibility here, this was her oppertunity to learn, why you don't co-sign, and why it is uncouth to even ask someone to do it. You said you are savers, but if you were following the baby steps, you could not have co-signed, because that is not staying out of debt forever. If you complete the Baby steps, you would not be able to co-sign because you would not have a credit ratting. I made a huge mistake of cosigning for my daughter when she was 20 and had no credit. She had a great job at the time and made the first several car payments. Then she quit her wonderful job because her boyfriend was fired from the same place she worked. I was stuck making the car payment because she was living with her loser boyfriend who wasn't working, and she was trying to make ends meet for both of them. I ended up paying about 75% of that car loan. Fortunately it didn't put me in a horrible financial spot, but it was money I could have been investing for the future! Many years later when she totaled her car in an accident, she had a good chunk of money saved up for another car, but was lacking $2,000. It was a really good used car, and totally worth the extra $2,000. Because she had no credit, we loaned the money to her on our credit card. She paid it back in six months PLUS the interest which was 13%. I was stupid the first time around. My husband and I were forgiving the second time around. She learned her lesson from the first car debacle, because I would not let her forget, and was incredibly thankful that we were willing to give her a second chance.

Generally it is not. Unless, of course, you are prepared to pay the loan.
@chrisgast7 жыл бұрын
It's typically a bad idea. In general, finances should be treated like a lifeguard between a rock and a hard place with it's victim. Say for example you are a lifeguard and you need to rescue a person who's in trouble underneath the piers. You have the person now but a big strong wave is about to slam you into a pier piling and the pier area is too wide to get out of quickly. Do you put yourself against the piling or do you put the victim against the piling? If you put yourself against the piling, then you are precisely doing the same thing when co-signing a loan or mortgage. If you put yourself against the piling, then you could get knocked out and/or your ribs broken and then you BOTH will drown. You put the victim against the piling and force them to deal the brunt of the hit, that way you could still save them. Same thing applies to finances. You can't guarantee the other person will survive (pay for the loan/mortgage). If you endanger yourself by co-signing the loan, how are BOTH of you going to survive if he/she doesn't pay the loan/mortgage or lose their job and can't find a new one???
@topsykretts2264 Жыл бұрын
Cosigning is stupid. Too many things can go wrong and put strains on relationships you care about that could’ve been easily avoided just by saying NO. Doesn’t matter how responsible you think the person is. Also if that person is as responsible as they say they are then they wouldn’t need a co-signer. They would also be patient and save up for whatever it is they need the money for or find a different legal way.

I told my son (when he was in college driving my paid off Tahoe for free), the only way I'd ever co sign a car note was: 1) give me 6 months payments in advance, 2) you pay me directly every month 10 days before the due date. 3) if you miss a payment, I'll tap into the 6 month reserve. 4) once it's down to 3 month reserve, car is getting sold. guess what? he paid cash for a car off Craigslist. I made it so uncomfortable for him to consider even asking me to cosign 😉. plus I kept telling him you don't want car payments... pay cash, get a gently used car. 👍👍👍

But if you must do that and before you do that, Ask yourself these 2 Questions:1)-Why co-sign for someone who is totally irresponsible of meeting their obligations of paying their Bills on time? And 2)-Why Co-Sign for someone who doesn't have a stable strong structured type income to begin with? If a person can't pay for it with cash outright, It ain't meant for them to have it in the First Place! Plain and Simple!

Your name is NOT on the deed? I hope that's not true Arlene. That means if "anything happens" you are out on the street. People laugh at married people: "I don't need a piece of paper to show we love each other". Love has nothing to do with it, genius. The law does; IF you don't want to be living at the homeless shelter when he/she kicks you out of THEIR house.

I wish Dave would emphasize more on HOW to say no to lending money or cosigning for someone. We get it --- don't do it. How??

When people ask you to co sign, they want to scam you. Period. If they had their finances in order and understoof the risk and responsibility of signing that, they wouldnt ask in the first place.

It only a bad idea if a person is not responsible, usually with a relative such as for child is not often a bad idea. But when it's for a close friend it can be mess

It's really only a bad idea if the person that is borrowing the money (in your case, YOU) is not responsible with money or ANYTHING for that matter. Even if the person was responsible, what if they lost their job and can't get a new one? Then the person who cosigned it is now on the hook for it.

I've had a cosigner for my apt when I was 18, and 2 other times I moved apts at a young age. Excellent credit. I'm extremely responsible. But then again, no one would have known for sure that I was. Now my dad who I rarely speak to is asking for me to cosign and I wont. I know hes irresponsible. Guess it depends on how responsible people are...but I definitely am grateful for my cosigners who helped me build my credit and now my credit is so good that people are asking ME. And I'm 23!

Co-signing is dangerous. It means you are a risk taker who likes unnecessary risk. When you co-sign it means you are going to pay the debt whether you want it or not. If one feels they have to co-sign ask the person you are co-signing for something in collateral in case they don’t pay and you will see if they will ask you again to co-sign.

He's basically saying that the parent lending / paying for their housing up front is better than co-signing for that apartment would be.
