I was asked to co sign twice at 18 and if it wasn’t for me listening to Dave since 16 I probably would’ve done it. Looking back now, I’m now 20, the two people are both in trouble financially and I would’ve taken on the full debt. I thank God for Dave

Co-signing is even dumber than lending someone money cause when you have to co-sign, it's money you did not have to begin with and then you will have banks coming after you for money you don't even have. If you can't afford to GIVE the money to someone then you can't afford to lend or co-sign.

Do we have the same in-laws?!! My in-laws want me and my husband to put my mother-in-law’s mortgage in our name. Mind you, we already have a house mortgage for the home we live in, but they want us to take on a second mortgage for “the sake of the family” knowing full well we want to buy a better home for ourselves when we start our family soon. Silly b*tches.

yeah, I was stupid! I co signed my daughter's student line of credit. After 2 years she quit school and left the country, leaving me (just retired) with $40,000 of debt and a bad credit rating. Makes me so sad cuz she wasn't raised this way. So we had to pull money from our retirement plan. Thanks to God we are savers and my husband just landed a great job where we think we can recoup in a few years. It breaks my heart that she would do this to us.

Well you said you didn't raise her this way, but, you did raise her, and she did this. You really should take some responsibility here, this was her oppertunity to learn, why you don't co-sign, and why it is uncouth to even ask someone to do it. You said you are savers, but if you were following the baby steps, you could not have co-signed, because that is not staying out of debt forever. If you complete the Baby steps, you would not be able to co-sign because you would not have a credit ratting. (Not you specifically Bonnie) though I am a little harsh, just some things to think about.

I remember I needed a co-signer on my first car. I fought tooth and nail for the sales guy to not ask my mom. I wanted a certain car, in order to get it I needed a co-signer. Knowing what I know now, I should have just taken the cheaper car where I didn't need a co-signer. Even if you pay on time you dont want that feeling of someone constantly over your shoulder.

I made a huge mistake of cosigning for my daughter when she was 20 and had no credit. She had a great job at the time and made the first several car payments. Then she quit her wonderful job because her boyfriend was fired from the same place she worked. I was stuck making the car payment because she was living with her loser boyfriend who wasn't working, and she was trying to make ends meet for both of them. I ended up paying about 75% of that car loan. Fortunately it didn't put me in a horrible financial spot, but it was money I could have been investing for the future! Many years later when she totaled her car in an accident, she had a good chunk of money saved up for another car, but was lacking $2,000. It was a really good used car, and totally worth the extra $2,000. Because she had no credit, we loaned the money to her on our credit card. She paid it back in six months PLUS the interest which was 13%. I was stupid the first time around. My husband and I were forgiving the second time around. She learned her lesson from the first car debacle, because I would not let her forget, and was incredibly thankful that we were willing to give her a second chance.

@chrisgast
@chrisgast 7 жыл бұрын
It's typically a bad idea. In general, finances should be treated like a lifeguard between a rock and a hard place with it's victim. Say for example you are a lifeguard and you need to rescue a person who's in trouble underneath the piers. You have the person now but a big strong wave is about to slam you into a pier piling and the pier area is too wide to get out of quickly. Do you put yourself against the piling or do you put the victim against the piling? If you put yourself against the piling, then you are precisely doing the same thing when co-signing a loan or mortgage. If you put yourself against the piling, then you could get knocked out and/or your ribs broken and then you BOTH will drown. You put the victim against the piling and force them to deal the brunt of the hit, that way you could still save them. Same thing applies to finances. You can't guarantee the other person will survive (pay for the loan/mortgage). If you endanger yourself by co-signing the loan, how are BOTH of you going to survive if he/she doesn't pay the loan/mortgage or lose their job and can't find a new one???
@topsykretts2264

Cosigning is stupid. Too many things can go wrong and put strains on relationships you care about that could’ve been easily avoided just by saying NO. Doesn’t matter how responsible you think the person is. Also if that person is as responsible as they say they are then they wouldn’t need a co-signer. They would also be patient and save up for whatever it is they need the money for or find a different legal way.

I told my son (when he was in college driving my paid off Tahoe for free), the only way I'd ever co sign a car note was: 1) give me 6 months payments in advance, 2) you pay me directly every month 10 days before the due date. 3) if you miss a payment, I'll tap into the 6 month reserve. 4) once it's down to 3 month reserve, car is getting sold. guess what? he paid cash for a car off Craigslist. I made it so uncomfortable for him to consider even asking me to cosign 😉. plus I kept telling him you don't want car payments... pay cash, get a gently used car. 👍👍👍

I haven't missed one payment having a cosigner and has actually boasted my credit to were my next car won't need a cosigner. Not everyone is irresponsible but i always pay my car payment before anything. If i can do it and succeed why can't other people? Cosigning changed my way of living, i don't live like a king anymore and i always pay my bills before anything else. if you take care of business before having fun you won't need to worry about ruining anyone's credit.

So in the meantime they keep putting mileage on mom & dad's car? They need a car now so they take two or three thousand dollars and put it on this new junker which stays parked in my driveway and then one day it starts to leak oil??? Hmmm........ We have no public transport in this area. I get what Dave is saying. Just not sure I like the alternative. My kids are the most responsible kids you've ever seen. They do their chores around the house and they never miss a day of work. They go to church every Sabbath and they pray before they even start the car up. Proverbs 17:18 talks about your neighbor but it doesn't really mention about your kids.

never co-sign.... if you really want to help them you can pay for it yourself and have the person you're helping owe you.... when my niece had to get a car to go to college she didn't have the money so I paid for the car and she owed me the money.... and she paid me when her scholarship money came in.

That is a good idea. When the car is paid off, you can transfer ownership. But while you the lender owns the car, you have the liberty to sell or get rid of it at will.

Your sister did not need a car to go to college. Public transport runs very often around every 5-10 minutes during school/work hours

Dave is spot on with this one as learned the hard way back in 1997 when i co-signed for a cousin to get a car and i ended up getting stuck with the car note,But fortunately, i was able to do a settlement offer for a fraction of what the debt was actually worth and i paid it off.I'll tell anybody that The surest way to Poverty is To Co-Sign for anyone under any circumstances. But if you must do that and before you do that, Ask yourself these 2 Questions:1)-Why co-sign for someone who is totally irresponsible of meeting their obligations of paying their Bills on time? And 2)-Why Co-Sign for someone who doesn't have a stable strong structured type income to begin with? If a person can't pay for it with cash outright, It ain't meant for them to have it in the First Place! Plain and Simple!

Even when you get a co-signer, the borrower still needs to have good credit. (At least for a home mortgage) I’m not sure why this would turn out to be bad. I know tens of people who had co-signers and none of them defaulted,

Your name is NOT on the deed? I hope that's not true Arlene. That means if "anything happens" you are out on the street. People laugh at married people: "I don't need a piece of paper to show we love each other". Love has nothing to do with it, genius. The law does; IF you don't want to be living at the homeless shelter when he/she kicks you out of THEIR house.

When people ask you to co sign, they want to scam you. Period. If they had their finances in order and understoof the risk and responsibility of signing that, they wouldnt ask in the first place.

It's really only a bad idea if the person that is borrowing the money (in your case, YOU) is not responsible with money or ANYTHING for that matter. Even if the person was responsible, what if they lost their job and can't get a new one? Then the person who cosigned it is now on the hook for it.

I've had a cosigner for my apt when I was 18, and 2 other times I moved apts at a young age. Excellent credit. I'm extremely responsible. But then again, no one would have known for sure that I was. Now my dad who I rarely speak to is asking for me to cosign and I wont. I know hes irresponsible. Guess it depends on how responsible people are...but I definitely am grateful for my cosigners who helped me build my credit and now my credit is so good that people are asking ME. And I'm 23!

Co-signing is dangerous. It means you are a risk taker who likes unnecessary risk. When you co-sign it means you are going to pay the debt whether you want it or not. If one feels they have to co-sign ask the person you are co-signing for something in collateral in case they don’t pay and you will see if they will ask you again to co-sign.
