One thing about warding and map awareness, I used to ward constantly, but I was never looking at the map so it didn't help much. I've found now that I look at the map much more often, I'll notice when we have no vision and WANT to ward because I can't see anything. I feel like telling people to ward doesn't help the underlying issue which is map awareness. If you build map awareness, you'll want to ward though
@geli95us5 ай бұрын
And the underlying issue of lack of map awareness is bad threat assessment, if you feel threatened you'll want to look at the map, if you look at the map you'll realize that you don't have vision and thus feel unsafe, which will make you want to ward to increase safety

@Gloriankithsanus4 ай бұрын
In fact, I think he meant selective perception. Confirmation bias is the broad overall term for a lot of smaller things that play into it. "I am bronze" is not really a preconception which you could have a confirmation bias for. It's the result of selective perception from playing and ignoring your bad plays.
@tails53884 ай бұрын
no. Confirmation bias is starting with a conclusion and only looking evidence that promotes that conclusion instead of looking at all the evidence available and making a reasonable decision. He was likely talking about "Positive associate" bias. Where we tend to remember or focus on positive traits and experiences over negative ones. Like ignoring red flags in an abusive relationship because they are nice *sometimes* for example.

Players have gotten better in general too man. I've been platinum one season, back then I even met Ocelote in one of my ranked games, most other seasons I ended up in gold. This season I even touched Iron 1. What I realized is even in Iron 1 people aren't so bad, they know how to play their character and they cs really well. Could be I've gotten older, I'm 39 now, and lost my quick reflexes. So yea, I can really understand how people end up in Iron 4.
@Gloriankithsanus4 ай бұрын
You don't need reflexes. As he says in the video, league is a game of anticipation - most of the time you know what's going to happen - the moment you get surprised, is the moment your personal game knowledge was lacking. People who are iron just really don't play enough with intention. Or not frequent enough to begin with. Which is totally fine.

I main jungle, but have had my laning phase both mid and top periodically. For me it was such a red flag when annie goes for Kennen Kennen Kennen when they have 1100 gold and NEED to base asap. If their focus was 90% on the wave and just dumped W R on it at multiple points and pressed B they would have a 500% bigger chance to win that game. And he can fix these things, he is not hopeless at all, as long as he gets that chip off his shoulder about ranks and stuff. I remember your video which I hate to bring up, when you played in bronze to demonstrate the points we could say this Annie needs to work on. As you said yourself later, it doesn't mean anything when a competent player goes smurfing and does it, BUT this kind of demonstration really hits it home big time. Since it's a genuine iron player, again, no insult to Alex, it shows the things needing fixing, and you commenting it as a coach in the background does the job beautifully. I think we can use more of this kind of content when you feel like it, since open minded and curious people across the ladder might need just this message and a relatable case study to watch with your explanation in the background. Much ❤ for this, Big Curtis W video.

There was a skillcapped video that probably added the most consistency to my gameplay over anything else and that video was the how to recall like a challenger or something like that. Getting a good reset is such a major fundamental part of the game I have to remember about when I leave my aram cave and do some ranked. Learning how to get good recalls without tp also made me appreciate having tp so much more. I've been playing jhin and brand adc this season and I always take tp on brand so any unfortunate bot fiesta isn't and instant game loser. But yeah making sure to crash a big wave for a cheater recall and then not letting your opponents get a good recall is winning lane 101 for me these days. Different matchups make things different every game of course but crashing that wave to make sure they lose minions and you don't is majorly important. Toplane will teach you quickly what a good death is when you get dove for a 1v1 but the wave you lose is so big that you never recover. Your opponent in that case took a great death in order to set you behind.

One with your analogy. There are no new players, hence dying in NA and EU (I mean for ranked play). Simple fix: If someone is afk for 15 minutes, it terminates the game. Always have +ev double or closer to double compared to -ev. At least Dimond always rewards playing. Now with Vanguard punish players who are sorting (easier said than done) or hard inting. (Yes, there are more things to do, but this is the best way to let new players get in and stick with ranked. All popular games do this like Fortnight, CS, etc.)

Sure there are legit new players who deserve to be in iron but there's also lots of vet players who do know how to play the game and often get called out to be "smurfing" just cos can't climb and hard stuck in low elo for one reason or another. There is also a chunk of smurfs in iron 4. I mean there's a meta of certain players putting their accounts there on purpose. And the system doesn't detect them; And why would it when Riot doesn't even play their own game to know of these issues. The point is; it's like playing any new account. You're going to run into players that are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc account. You aren't actually playing at Iron 4 despite being Iron 4. The reality is the rank system in these games are extremely flawed, and in this game in particular. One season the system will favour duo queuing. Another season the champions you enjoy/play are sub-par (or the counters have been buffed), Or maybe the roles you play have less impact, etc, etc. Fact is that the ranked system isn't really an indication of skill (I mean it is and isn't), it's more of an indication that you follow the current flavour of Riots BS balance. Hell, if you want to increase your win rate, dodge every Red team game and play only Blue side. That automatically improves your rating (not by much, but a fraction of an increase can be enough to climb). And the fact the riot hasn't fixed that shows how they really give a shit about competitiveness, especially when champions are balanced for pro-play and not balanced for the 99.9% of players that actually make the company money. /rant
@geli95us5 ай бұрын
This comment is a giant red flag, you're focusing on factors outside your control when it's perfectly possible to improve your situation using just the things you do have control over. Also, you're making a lot of faulty assumptions, riot doesn't balance champions around pro-play, they mostly balance them around the elo at which they are strongest, they don't want simple champions to run rampant in low elo just so those champions can have a 50% winrate at challenger, and vice-versa. Role impact doesn't matter for climb, it makes it faster, sure, but it doesn't affect the maximum rank you can achieve, the reason is that in your games, every role is matched except your own, for example, if 90% of games were won based on who has the best toplaner, you'd auto-win 45% percent of games and auto-lose 45% of games, so they balance out, in the end, the only thing that matters is your performance compared to your counterpart. Any tricks that improve your rank won't take you very far at all, say that dodging some games gets you from 50% to 51% winrate, what happens? you go up a division, the games become harder and that 51% becomes 50% again, almost no change at all, other than wasting time dodging games. The difference is meta is more of the same thing, playing a 52% champion can maybe net you a few divisions, but having to learn a new champion each time the meta changes means you're better off developing mastery with one champion even if they are not the strongest, there are a lot of challenger players who otp sub-optimal picks, so it's obviously possible.

@@geli95us I don't think you understand my main point of view: Anyone who doesn't see ranked for what it is; A fucking joke, are in fact not very bright. Nobody cares about your rank. It's not an achievement. It's a waste of time. And even more of a waste of time when it's not designed properly. That being said. I will refute your argument that riot balances around all elos. Champions that are problem champions in the competitive scene are usually gutted into the ground until Riot decides to rework them. But that's rarely done for champions that are a problem in lower ranks and are non-competitive champions in proplay. It's happened time and time again. I mean look at Sivir and a lesser extent Janna. Both very strong with a team and coordination. But they are on the weaker side for solo Q carrying. What part of that is "balancing for other elos"? Janna has been so nerfed over the years that she does literally no damage anymore, meanwhile Riots lovechild Karma can and does annihilate lanes. You're also missing the point about role imbalance. If jungler and support have the most impact in the game, then logically you should play those roles to carry and win the game. You're kidding yourself if you really think all roles are equal, and "they don't matter". Games are won based on impact on the lobby, not based on whether you win or lose your island game, please don't get that mixed up. You could be playing a champion all the time that does extremely well in lane, but doesn't scale or team fight effectively. Warwick top is an example of this. He's generally a champion to side-line team fights or push (ironically his passive is yet to be fixed to actually work against towers, meanwhile Vayne top gets love and attention (while warwick has more bugs in his kit than vayne has skills)). And your argument of learning new champions isn't really a valid argument. If you don't know the champions of the meta, then you're not really equipped to beat them in lane (as you seem to imply just beating them wins you more games). I will grant you that JUST winning your lane (and doing nothing else with it) at lower elo brackets is probably enough to climb. But then again, if you're in iron I'm pretty sure you can just turn up to lane and that increases your odds of winning. But that's more to do with enemy players quitting rather than you having an impact on the actual game. You didn't make that player quit. Just as you can't make others tilt, only nudge them in hopes they do. But then, is that really being better at the game? Or just being good at annoying other players? At that point you're not really playing league. You're playing the ladder. The take away from all of this is that Riot doesn't understand their own game. They keep releasing new content before fixing bugs of champions that are years old. So to sit there are pretend like their ranked system isn't broken/unbalanced is peek ignorance. That's the biggest red flag here.

I don't think that the confirmation bias thing is as true as some people think ngl. I feel like it has more to do with league being a team game where everything you do effects the team for better or for worse meaning that a lot can go wrong whether you play well or not. You just have to try and make eniugh good decisions to balance it out. Many times I've lost matches where one lane got fed and could 1v5 the rest of the team. In situations like that, you just gotta chalk it up to the game. Unfortunately that happens a lot in low elo and depending on the champs you play, you may not be able to make up for someone doing bad.
@joshuaharris22455 ай бұрын
It's probably MORE true than some people think. I promise you, for every "mistake" you see your teammate doing that drives you crazy wondering how they can be in the same elo as you, you're doing a similar level mistake 20+ times without noticing. But you'll either say "ah shit" and then move on and never think about it again, or think "i rarely do that, its ok", or just straight up not notice you did it. We as humans REALLY don't like admitting to this. I'm well aware of the phenomenon, and know its true. And yet I *still* get defensive about it. So just nature of the beast. It's a much bigger deal than you think.

22:20 Sorry if this sounds mean but. . . If you get into a fight for your life and FORGET to use summoner spells, there is something seriously wrong with the way you are thinking in this game. They have cool downs that are 3-5 times longer than your R ability! This means they are 3-5 times MORE IMPORTANT lol. If you wouldn't forget to use your R in a fight, you surely shouldn't be forgetting to use summoner spells. . . I do know people in Iron 4 that main Kayle and constantly forget to use their R to save people or themselves. I suggest getting more familiar with the key binds and spending a LOT of time in bot matches to get comfortable piloting the characters. Good luck!

I disagree with taking teleport over ignite, you said it's easier for lane but I see it the other way around, because teleport it's harder to use it well and understand how to use it, I see teleport has adding complexity since it requires a better fundamental understanding of wave states and reset timers. In my experience when I was gold I tried to recreate and copy other mid layers who would take teleport, but then failed to know how to use it well, on the other hand ignite I see it as the easiest spell to use. Teleport lets you basically "cheat" a reset. In iron you are not learning league, you are learning how to play a real time video game on a computer. Theres no shame in that. It allows you to experience the world and retain the information you gained much better, than straight out spamming league games every day. At one point, you will enter information overload and then confirmation bias, selective bias and all the other issues that stop you from retaining information, both good and bad, is going to get hampered. Soloq, is a lot more on and off than we would like to think.

Mathematically, if smurfs are common enough then it's possible to be stuck because there are 4 vs 5 randoms which means the chance of a smurf on the opposing team is higher. I don't think this is actually the case in league but "you can always climb" is not necessarily always true.

you're assuming that the ranking system doesn't work. For an individual game, absolutely the chance of there being a smurf on the enemy team is higher, however smurf accounts very quickly get moved to align with the skill of the player, therefore we can assume that for an average game all 10 players in the game have a true skill level in line with their rank.

Despite the stigma regarding smurfs, League of Legends has an incredibly aggressive matchmaking system and very very quickly places smurfs in higher mmr games despite their account rank being lower. When playing through bronze and silver the amount of noticeable smurfs was astonishing low and the ones that felt like they were smurfs played more like they were low plat or mid gold, often throwing their leads and losing games despite being ahead. For me personally, it's only in plat games where I've started encountering the truly disgusting smurfs that are very clearly smurfing. I assume it's because of the very aggressive matchmaking where a smurf who plays in anything below platinum will be placed in plat mmr incredibly quickly before again being boosted up if they continue to stomp. Naturally this is all anecdotal and just my own experience.
