THANK YOU FOR THIS EXCELLENT VIDEO!! Yes, I’m shouting - because I have viewed at least a 1/2 dozen YT videos on the PnR (most if not all from prominent BB “explainer” channels) & *none* comes close to this one - clear verbal explanation, lots of examples, and a step-by-step review of all the options for using the PnR. Plus - & the more I think about it, I think this is a crucial part of what makes your video so good - NO voiceover narration from the creator. The play-by-play by the broadcast announcers is fine, but with the other videos I watched, the VOs were verbose & distracting. You gave super-concise statements of the key learning points & then let the video clips do the talking. Thank you so much (see, I stopped shouting) for enabling me to understand what I’m seeing when watching games.

Over the past 2+ years, I've picked up basketball seriously. I always used to play, but it was just because my friends did. By the time I began loving the game on my own and actually got passionate about it, the pandemic hit. It's been hard trying to improve as a player and learning everything on your own but KZbin and the internet were there to help. But the most helpful, by FAR, was finding your channel. Your breakdowns on dribble moves, defense, shooting, P&Rs and more were HUGE to my game. I literally learned every bit of defense and driving from your videos and it's helped me so much. I finally made my school team and managed to get on the starting 5. Can't thank you enough.

Really great examples and breakdown. I’ve seen so many screens irl and on KZbin be used terribly where the ball handler just ends up going iso on one defender after another after screens. Very few KZbin 2v2 creators use pnr. They just iso while the teammate stared and waits for the ball
@CoachFrikki Жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely agree. The PnR culture has to change. Why would you want a slow iso over a wide open three or slip to the basket?
@brootal4234 Жыл бұрын
@@CoachFrikki Yeah and it makes the team predictable and the game harder than it needs to be. I know one player who will complain about getting double teamed in a pickup game but he doesn’t get that the other team has him figured out. He’ll never pass so they just surround the iso player and he ends up losing the ball or calling weak fouls. I’m going to keep your vid in mind when I play this week and remind my teammates to roll or pass to the open screener.

Apologize for my confusion but I'm currently paused at 6:33 because "screen slips *right* between defenders can be taken as one of two meanings: 1. Screeners move to the right side of their body, between defenders (their right arm) 2. Screeners simply slip between defenders in whatever direction is advantages ("right" just emphasizes the action of them slipping)

Amazing breakdown, thanks coach. Just one small comment - in the Stockton/Malone empty side clips, we are in the era of illegal defense, so the help defender is forced to go late, otherwise they get a whistle. Nowadays you'll rarely get a side PnR THAT empty, and even more in Europe/FIBA rules, where no Defensive 3" means someone can camp under the paint to help on all rolls. That does free the skip pass, though.

3:37 the point is that if you pass, now you have a advantageous mismatch also if your defender switch to someone who is slower and taller, it's easy to blow pass them
@CoachFrikki Жыл бұрын
And if your switch defenders is not slower- what is the point of the screen then? Good teams don't have bad defenders.
@shuyuantang5331 Жыл бұрын
@@CoachFrikki still a lot of times we can get a big-on-small mismatch at the post area i think one key function of a screen is to create mismatch... of course my understanding of basketball is not nearly as good as yours, but this is one area where i have a slightly different observation
@CoachFrikki Жыл бұрын

@@CoachFrikki I never said I necessarily prefer it... it depends on the scenario I just wanted to say there is still a point there... even though it is not ideal... it could be an advantage And I would only prefer it if my screener is a great post player given that he has gotten into a good position I am not saying it's the best option, but it is another option especially when the defense is able to recover/switch fast

Good point, but that defender still has 4 help defenders with him. 2v1 situation or a wide open three is always better than a "mismatch". And in 99% of cases you don't have a Lebron on your team.

when they switch I actually think it's good to just attack the mismatch, at least most of the time. of course it has to be a clear mismatch, for example if you get a switch vs Anthony Davis (like the one in this video) maybe it's not the best mismatch you can get, but AD isn't definitely the average defender. and obviously those mismatches exists for the big as well. that being said I'll look forward to understand better those other options that are mentioned here

The video mentions the "perfect screen" has no contact, but I think that would really need both players (screener and ball handler) to have absolute perfect timing and I believe this is through a lot of training amongst the players. In pick-up games where people don't really know one another so well, I still think it's better to have the screener to make contact to "pick" off and seal the opposing player completely before rolling off in order to ensure the 2 v1 advantage.
@CoachFrikki Жыл бұрын
You can get the timing when playing with brand new players. The key is that the ball handler has to wait for the screener to roll. Attack (or pass) at the exact second you see the screener rolling. Problem w/ your strategy is that you can't "pick off" a player who is trying to go under and switch the screen.
@curiousboy2204 Жыл бұрын
@@CoachFrikki usually, the screener's defender will be guarding the screener (standing with his back facing the basket) instead of going up to face the ball handler. The screener will not be able to roll. So in this case, the ball handler shoots the ball by hiding behind the screen somewhat. If the screener's defender commits by going up to face the ball handler, the screener should roll. Then the ball handler attacks (or pass)
@curiousboy2204 Жыл бұрын
@@CoachFrikkiThe screener can set a "hard pick" i.e. stand just beside the opposing player to screen him and seal him. He will then not be able to move much.
@CoachFrikki Жыл бұрын
