Great video!! It's interesting that you get right to the issue that most people struggle with..."the ball goes in the direction of the racket face (strings)" not in the direction of the racket's travel. There must be 100 videos of how to hit a slice serve with pronation, but this one really connects all the dots. Thank you!

*THE* best slice serve coaching I have seen yet by a mile. This solved the mystery for me of what was going on at the ball level, and pieced everything together from the ground up. All while keeping everything simple enlighten that it could be mapped to a set of simple drills for someone to build on. Thank you 🙏
@lordbyron36034 жыл бұрын
I tried it today!! Wow! I’ve missed out all these years. This slice pronation is phenomenal. It looked good, felt good and generated tremendous pace. One of the club members commented “ nice serve!” First time anyone has ever made a comment like that. My service motion went up another level too. As I’m tossing the ball, both knees begin to bend towards the right at the same time I’m knocking the birthday hat off. My upper body torso is torqued at this point because it wants to spring upwards to the left. I spring upward using both feet. It resembled a Federer serve ... that’s how good it was. { I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that’s exactly what Roger is doing. He torques his body. That’s how he gets so much height off the ground why he gets that whipping action on his serve). Thanks again Ryan.

Ryan, you are a fantastic teacher ! This video in particular and a few others regarding the slice serve is explained so masterfully. Highlighting our human nature(whether beginner players or not) to face the net,or at least our tendency(and mistake) to have our entire racquet facing our target is powerful. So, you do a remarkable job at expressing and repeating (like any good teacher should) what really works best- the ball goes where your strings are pointing. In another video regarding the slice serve, I recall you saying, toss to the right, body goes to the right, racquet is swinging to the right and the strings are facing towards the target. Also, you don't even need to look at your target. Almost like a no-look pass in basketball(the no look pass in basketball are my words and my way of reinforcing this tennis truth about the serve). I'm in Arizona. I went out recently and just simply trusted these instructions. Magic! I just focused my eyes on a large light pole off to the right, tossed to the right , moved to the right with my strings facing the target 🎯. I'm not exaggerating - within a few minutes, I had that light bulb moment. I got it. It makes everything easier this way. It's also a fantastic serve that has been working out wonderfully for me. I appreciate your intelligent instructions. You've helped me become a better tennis player and I'm truly grateful ! Thanks !

One of the best slice serve videos on KZbin. thanks you! The face sends it, the path bends it. simple. I don't understand why so many instructors try to teach players to carve around the ball, and to not pronate. obviously all the pros are pronating on slice serves. Yea I can get some crazy slice with this carving motion, but my pace, control and consistency drops significantly. not really what I'm looking for when serving.
@TikiCat33 жыл бұрын
Absolutely fantastic lesson, Ryan. In addition to correcting my slice serve, you imbedded and demonstrated two "BIG CONCEPTS" to improve ALL tennis shots in this video: (a) "Tennis is an EDGE game", and (b) the ball goes in the direction of the racquet face, not in the direction of racquet face movement across the ball. Thanks!!!

I've been struggling with a consistent slice serve for three years and I never thought to use my topspin pro to practice before. I've also had trouble pronating with my slice serve because I try to hit the ball and curl around it - which leads to a ton of shanks off the frame. I tried warming up as you show in this video, and after I warmed up I got 60 of 80 second serves in which is a first for me!

The simple advice "the ball goes where your strings point" transformed my serve to the better in an hour of practice. Before I had a hard time serving down the T from the deuce side but when I do this it goes down the T with ease and the slice keeps the ball in. I also stay more sideways so more easy power. Now I only need to figure out how to consistenly serve out wide which I used to do with my old tecnique where I was simply rotating but opening up too early. From the ad side I hit out wide with this technique for some reason and again more easy power because I stay sideways. It's fine but I need to learn how to adjust if I'd like to go down the T more. Another video you have where you explain the slot position of the 1hbh made my backhand better. I don't hit with much top spin but as long as I focus on getting the racquet into the slot position at least I have consistent power.
