this is ok for beginners , more advanced players do pronate , the slice is created with the contact point on the ball, but you need to still pronate if you want more pace

Nice lesson! Can we have the same for the kick please? For a reason I ignore, people teach slice serves a lot more than kick on KZbin....

For this elbow conditioning, it may be helpful to use a whip analogy and see if they understand. Females tend to be able to imagine flowing movements easily, this analogy may have helped her really grasp the concept.

I taught a Russian guy how to serve by doing this throw against the fence technique cause he never threw a ball and hit his serve with a stiff straight arm. I was tired of seeing it so I told him I'm gonna teach you to throw then put a racket in your hand. It worked after about 25-30 reps as I got him to loosen up and bend his arm 90° then drop into a trophy position or semi trophy. It clicked. I was happy and he was happy. I told him to throw about 50 balls a day at a wall or his garage till he got the feel. Then come to the court and hit a bucket or two of balls bout 4 or 5 times a week.

at 2.40min Patrick says it's a very good first serve. I think there is something that can be improved if I just look at the position of non dominant arm, the position of the racket and the elbow of the dominant arm in the trophyphase. I don't really understand why he starts with the slice service instead of tackling the main problem of her serve. He only pays attention to it after 9.40 minutes!

So this technique is to hit the slice without pronation, right? Or even perhaps a bit of supination?

Hi Patrick, do we need to pronate the racquet? If I saw correctly, I think there was no pronation. I'm confused because most coaches tell me I need to pronate. Thing is I find it hard to pronate and still get the slice to the left, so I don't do pronate - which seems to be just like what you are doing in this video.
@igoraleksandrov6448

Hi, you are right - there is no pronation in this service. Patrick shows the serve for AMATEURS. Before contact point with the ball, racquet already is PARALLEL the net, next moment racquet is moving to right and carves the ball looks like from "12 to 3 hours" on clock circle. To make serve stronger SPORTSMEN use pronation. In this case racquet is moving and starts contact with the ball in position PERPENDICULAR the net. During the contact the ball (contact time is about 20 - 60 msec) pronation insures slice and power. PS - the same movement SPORTSMEN use for kick serve, but due to bended "to back and down" position of body, racquet is moving more to UP. Regards. Igor.

7:10 Patrick is telling her to carve around (supinate) and not to pronate??!!
@ianbuick8946

Often misconception is pronation in serve. All 3 serve motions have pronation but slice serve have less degree of pronation. If you don't pronate with continental grip, you WILL hit the edge of the racket frame. Hope this help.

On my slice serve I sometime "frame" the ball instead of hitting the strings , are there any tips or adjustments I should be looking at ?

Not a coach here. But you might want to focus on “hitting through the ball” instead of focusing on brushing the ball.

where do i toss the ball? In your different video, you said toss the ball in the same location as you hit a flat serve, but here the location seems to be a little rightward. which is right?

Right is easier to slice it, but if you can do it central the serve is harder to read.

Yes, the main issue was the wrong throwing motion: the girl didn’t move her elbow forward before the rest of the arm, even when throwing the ball with her hand. Patrick corrected that towards the end. Nice lesson!

Well done Patrick! Rule number 1: Find the people, who pay. You can teach what you want and have a fun! ) Girl, just try to toss the ball 2 o'clock, not 12. So, you will get the right angle (inside out) automatically. I teach it my students for 1,70 Euro/Hour. There is no magic:)

Why toss at 2. Your opponent knows what is coming. Toss in the same place each time (not for kick) use your degree of pronation to direct the ball.

Exactly my thoughts. The lady has a beautiful flat serve, all he has to do is to tell her to pronate less or delay the pronation a little so the racket meets the ball with an angle (instead of flat on). But he told her to “carve the ball”, which is wrong and an outdated teaching.

@@bournejason66 yup. Quite often he just repeats the same tired, incorrect phrases used in the 1960's and 70's. There is no denying his method and attitude are fantastic, but sometimes the content is not only lacking, but wrong.
