Boom Boom was alot more than a "contender" the guy was headed on to be a lightweight GOAT contender if not for the Kim fight which just broke him as a Catholic. I mean he is a literal kid here coming in as a massiveeeee underdog fighting one of the other all time greats in Alexis... And not only held his own but was winning an even amount of rounds heading into the end of the 9th. Ray is a fucking monster of a fighter

As a former Golden Gloves boxer in 1985-1987 the highest compliment I ever received was being told I fought like Alexis Arguello. I was very thin like Arguello and most wondered where the power came from. 😆 My main weapon was my right cross. Arguello's was legendary and devastating. RIP Champ.

I talked to Arguello a couple of times, I've heard from himself the story of a couple of his fights, one of them was the one first vs. Pryor and as the teenager that I was, I asked him: "He really cheated on you with some drug?" He told me that, after lillte black bottle episode happened, he felt like his punches did not have any effect on Pryor anymore and literally told to my father and me: "I hit him with all my might, twice and one third time. I realized that I had no more options to win and I prefered to let the referee to finish the count when I was knocked down". He was a real man, a gentleman like no other in history,

I felt at that time Gomez was to much for Sanchez to handle. It was a mis-match alright! Sanchez completely destroyed him and many were in a state of dis-belief! Aaron Pryor fought arguello. But there was one fighter that Pryor avoided and that was Duran. They avoided Sanchez. They realized he was special.

Alexis was another of my fav boxers. The boxers in that day were just that, they were the art. I didn't see when Alexis fought Aaron Pryor, but, was shocked to learn Alexis lost. It later came out that Aaron had been "juicing" . It was also said his trainer cheated on the wrap and also issued stimulants.. Although Alexis admitted Aaron beat him fairly, I'm more than certain there was bigger play in those fights.

Round 11 is the tipping point. From that point onward, Arguello's punches continue to have snap, but Mancini's don't. Scrappy effort from Mancini, though. No doubt about it. Amazing that he was only 20 years old. Same age as I was, but he was fighting a legend for a world championship; I was doing minimum-wage janitorial work. 😂

not to mention that Arguello isn't really a very talented fighter. he doesn't have a great chin, or blinding speed, or a high reserve of stamina nor size. all he had is his heart and punch. to compensate the lack of natural talents, he studied the sport, honed his skills and talent and learn how to fight in an old fashion way: fighting regularly.

A glorified sparring session, with Arguello carrying Mancini for a good portion of the fight. If he had wanted to,he could of stopped Ray in 4 - 6 rounds.Look at the early rounds in this fight, and Arguello throws no punches with bad intentions.Look at the opening rounds of him against Pryor and you see a fight from first bell.Ray had nothing that Arguello had to figure out or be cautious about. His corner knew that when they took the fight,he was taylor made for him - a short armed pressure type who allows him to stay set.
