Around 1960 N&W would spray lacquer on top of the coal to prevent the dust blowing off. The cost of the spraying was offset by the tons of dust retained.

They're not actually slag cars. They're bottle cars for carrying molten steel. AK steel is now closed, so they're presumably on their way for scrap.

I appreciate your getting the good pictures. I can remember when a hundred car train was quite a site, they only had one engine. Today you see a unit train with as many as three engine units.

Hope thoes iron ladels are keept covered as at one of our steel works, some time ago, a ladel was being filling with liquid metal and some water was In it. The ladel exploded. It's nice to see you have some working steel works. Thanks for the video.

Great video and really like the old C&O signals. It's quite possible my grandfather worked on those back in the C&O days, He was stationed in Maysville, KY and I believe he covered from Russell to Silver Grove.

I was wondering yesterday about the danger of certain rairoad crossings where long vehicles with low ground clearance could get stuck. I can see today that there is signage in place on the one at time 8:30 of the video. A good thing!

Thanks, Jaw Tooth! Lots of history on display, including a few CSX coal hoppers still marked NYC. CSX picked up a lot of Conrail rolling stock which was still accounted for by the railroad they came from in the 1968 Penn Central merger! Funny they are still on the NYC books 63 years later. You'd think they would have depreciated off by now.

At 15:07 a covered hopper with defunct Delaware & Hudson markings! We had the same type signal structures on the Erie side of the railroad in the 1970's. Nice work, as always. I certainly enjoy your videos and the inclusion of the pets and grandchildren. God bless!

There is a train yard at Peach Creek, WVA . It’s north of Logan on Route 10. My uncles lived 3 blocks from the train yard. . As a kid while visiting I would find a place to watch the trains there on vacation

Very nice that the old signal boom together with the signals is still in operation and has not been replaced by more modern equipment. Not as famous as the Union Pacific #844 but that was the lead on the coal trains train which had a NYC ex CR survivor. Fine selection of cars on the phosphate train. Old CNW SOO the rare Delaware & Hudson car and age 40 the former Klemme Grain car. Those trains get some of the oldest non repainted covered hoppers.

If those tankers were full on that first train that would be some serious weight. I left that comment too soon. From the sound of that rear engine, they were full.
