Coal Train Kicks Up Coal Dust, Blocks Crossing & Giant Tank Train With DPU, Old C&O Signals In Use!

Long tank train with CSX DPU Shoving Hard on the rear at AK Steel railroad yard in Russell, Kentucky. Grain train passes a coal train and coal dust is kicked up like a big haze! Chesapeake & Ohio Railway lineside signal still in use as the tank car train passes. A railroad crossing is blocked as the coal train stops on the main line. I went ahead of the coal train to Greenup , Kentucky and waited for it to pass me again just after a grain train went eastbound past me at a crossing along the Ohio River. Also, we get to see Chessie and Norfie after the trains. That's the summary of the video. The best parts of this video are the C&O signals still in use and the huge oil pipeline on wheels with a DPU shoving hard on the rear. The C&O signal in this video is the last one of its kind on this CSX line. There are a few of them still in operation on the CSX Logan Sub in West Virginia that I will be filming soon. The old style signals are becoming rare since the railroads are removing them or replacing them with SafeTran signals. The one in this video is very difficult to film. This video was filmed on October 6 and 7, 2021. Best frequencies to use here are 160.230, 160.320 and 452.9375. Thanks for watching!

They're not actually slag cars. They're bottle cars for carrying molten steel. AK steel is now closed, so they're presumably on their way for scrap.

Around 1960 N&W would spray lacquer on top of the coal to prevent the dust blowing off. The cost of the spraying was offset by the tons of dust retained.

In 2016, I worked on the Ironton-Russel Bridge shown in the background briefly. East-bound CSX coal trains on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River moved at 20 mph maximum and the West-bound NS coal trains on the Ohio side moved at 45-50 mph. The NS trains left a fine of mist of coal dust in their wake.

Thanks, Jaw Tooth! Lots of history on display, including a few CSX coal hoppers still marked NYC. CSX picked up a lot of Conrail rolling stock which was still accounted for by the railroad they came from in the 1968 Penn Central merger! Funny they are still on the NYC books 63 years later. You'd think they would have depreciated off by now.

@Frank Roberts Exactly. Why do people feel the need to say they hope trains don't derail. When a car drives through the shot, nobody says "I hope they don't crash." When a person walks down the street, nobody says, "I hope they don't have a heart attack."
