Riding in a coal car can be very dangerous. When i worked at Plant Scherer in Georgia 1997-07, we had a rider who apparently had fallen asleep in a car on the long ride south. Somehow the rider got trapped and when the car dumped (bottom dump coal car), he fell into the pile below. We found parts of him in the coal vibrators and conveyors. It was a sad day at the plant. Those cars are RWSX so they are Robert W Scherer coal cars hauling PRB coal (the dust is very volatile), so if it gets on your clothing and your around a fire it will burn quicker than you can get your pants off.

Back in the 30's my Dad rode the rails from Illinois to California and ended up helping pour cement for the Golden Gate Bridge. He never talked about it much.....just he had to use caution in the many "Hobo camps" along the way as there were people there who would rob one.....or worse. This was during the great depression that resulted from the stock market crash of 1929 and those of us living today have a hard time understanding just how tough things were. He said there was a hobo camp under the bridge where they would congregate and would wait for one of the workers to fall and that way they knew there would be a job opening! He met and married my Mother in Portland, where I was born. He never said how he reached Portland....just one of the many things I wish I could talk with him about if he were still alive.

There is nothing wrong with train hopping. Train hopping or fright hopping goes back to the 18th century (about the time of the American Civil War of 1861). This is how Americans got around. In today's world, it is done less often because of modern day cars, however, it still does happen for those that need transportation and no money. It is consider to be very dangerous but for some. It's worth it.
@Soulrider20128 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure if you're just trying to rationalize something that you know is wrong or if you really, truly have no clue that hopping on a freight train is wrong. Yes, it may have been something a segment of society did back many decade ago but that doesn't make it "right". Quite plainly, it is and always has been an illegal activity. Just because because you can't afford to pay for something doesn't mean that you get to do it or have something, for free. If you can't afford to travel within the legal mean available to you, you don't travel. Now, if one wishes to break the law and risk whatever the penalty is and hop on a moving freight train that's fine, but it doesn't make it "OK" or in any way, legal. Just being on the train track or the adjacent land the track are on or being in the train yard/rail yard without permission is trespassing. Should someone get injured while on railroad property, they can SUE the railroad for damages. Even though the person KNEW being there or trying to ride on a freight train (or getting on/off) was potentially dangerous, they can STILL sue the rail road company. The danger aside, why should the railroad company provide free passage for someone to travel from point "A" to point "B" without compensation (free). Would it be any different if someone broke into a plane and stowed away in order to travel to some destination that they couldn't afford to buy a ticket to and travel to the conventional way? No, it would still be just as illegal, although a bit more difficult probably. :) Just because it's easier to do doesn't make it "OK" or legal in any way.

+Soulrider2012 You seem to have distorted the meaning of "right" and "legal" such that you view them as synonyms. Which makes you a good, well-mannered sheeple; bet you got good grades in your "civics" class! The truth is more nuanced: sometimes what is legal, is right; sometimes there's no connection; sometimes, it is WRONG to do what's legal! Heck, during the 1800s, the Fugitive Slave Act meant you were *legally obligated* to return a runaway slave, even in a free state; to do otherwise was "aiding and abetting" theft. Was it "right" to obey the law, there?

Soulrider2012 What’s legal isn’t the same as what’s right. The law has become so big and bloated that nobody knows what is legal or illegal anymore, not even the lawyers and judges. Everybody breaks the law sometime, the best you can do is minimize the impact of your lawbreaking. Hopping a freight train generally has a very low impact, such that most of the time nobody but the hobo knows it even happened. So if you need a ride, that might be the best way. You say hopping a freight is like stowing away on an airliner because you couldn't afford the ticket. Not so: the freight train goes where no passenger train goes, and the freight companies don't provide passenger service, so it is impossible to buy a ticket at any price. By the way, people provide free transportation all the time, just to be nice. Ever heard of hitchhiking? And I'm thinking that in some places, hitchhiking is more dangerous than freight hopping.

Leave them alone, some have a hard time in life enough as it is. Let them enjoy the ride. What show was it on that a millionaire did this and just wanted a month to be a hobo just to get away from it all?

Just because you saw them doesn't mean they were "busted"..... thumbs down...

Why pay money to ride a passenger train when you can ride a freight train for free. Lol

Just FYI: "rider's" means, in English, "of rider" not plural, as in "riders". Huge difference. Language evolved after millennia of work. Is it true you have people gathered here to watch a coal drag leave town? Really?

No riders were busted in this video so if that’s what your here to see don’t waste your time.

Theres way more important things to do than pick on the hobos that ride the rails. As long as they arent destroying anything leave them be.

If you're going to ride, don't do it in a live load. The load can shift and you're dead like that.
