It's funny; I made that comment just before shipping out to boot camp, and it's been a wild ride since then. Now I'm out (due to medical reasons), but damned if that wasn't the proudest year of my life, even if it did consist of scraping grime off buoys.

I wanted to work on airplanes at the Smithsonian so I signed up thinking I would get A/P training. I was 25 at the time and I didn't apply myself so I became an MK, something I had done from a young age. Even though I didn't achieve what I set out to do I wouldn't change a thing. I met a lot of great people and had experiences that I never would have had in civilian life. I'm not saying it was all good but that's life. Persevere.

Is it possible to go into the Coast Guard "normally" (straight to boot-camp), then go to the academy and go into OCS, then re-enter service as an officer?

I did 20 years in the Coast Guard as an enlisted man and never experienced this.
