We definitely have the best of the best and I so graciously thank each and every single one of them for all that they do! Our coastline is extremely dangerous and these men and women put their lives on the line to protect our coastline and do not receive the acknowledgement and respect that they deserve. Thank you Cape D, for the lives that you save, while putting your own on the line. Many beautiful blessings to all of you.

These guys know what they are doing,,,,,in 1967 on my first day in the Coast Guard, concerning rescue operations,we were told “you have to go out but you don’t have to come back” sounds bad but it makes you pay attention. Hats off to all currently serving

Growing up in Astoria, that bar does not look like much when you are standing on the jetties looking out but man is it a whole other story when you are out there in a boat.

As a Washington land based fisherman, even I’ve heard many stories of ambitious anglers taking on the Bar. Certain days the ocean side of the Ilwaco jetty will give you SMALL glimpse of what’s out there. Wish I joined the Coast Guard when I was younger to gain this experience. Much respect 🙏🏽🇺🇸🌊

Love the Cape D Coast Guard! I was very nervous crossing the Bar for the first time, but knowing these folks were nearby added a level of confidence. It anyone notices this, is the Biddle still the dredge?

You believe you're in total control of your destiny until ucross this bar in rough weather. Try to come in on an outgoing tide and you will have a Come-to-Jesus Moment. I had a commercial fishing vessel out of Charleston Oregon but cut my teeth on this bar. I'm happy to be alive!

Back in the 60s, a restaurant in Winchester Bay OR displayed a photo series of CG surf training on the Umpqua Bar, rolling clear over and coming back up. Dramatic.

I would imagine that first time you were exposed to something like this you would be petrified! Once you realize that these crafts can handle pretty much anything then it's probably fun!

This is surf practice. Every station has it. You have to do this so when you're facing the real thing during a rescue you'll know what to do.
@robertmantell1700 Жыл бұрын
No, only surf stations conduct training in surf conditions, defined as 8ft or greater breaking waves. Heavy weather folks do some in 8ft or less OR go to a surf unit and train under Surfmen, but not every station operates in these conditions. While I was in there were several instances of units not holding surf or heavy weather designations going out in conditions above their level of training and/or in boats not equipped for these conditions and having major mishaps as a result.

My dad was stationed at Cape D back in the 60's. There's a reason Coasties are sent to Cape D for this training-you won't find it anywhere else. The Columbia River Bar is the most dangerous in the world. It's known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific" for a reason.

i have always wondered what would happen.. if a large vibrator was installed on the keel of a ship.. or up on the bulbous bow... causing vibrations in the local oceans.. would the introductions of out of phase vibrations calm down the weather induced waves in the local area.. perhaps experimenting with buoys that have a similar feature.. to calm down harbor entries. even if the buoys only had an engine and hydraulic pump to spin the vibrator sitting on the sea bed below the buoy.
