Flares (or other Visual Distress Signals) are only required on Lake Superior in Minnesota. I think James has taken his rig out for lake trout on Superior so he has them.

Flares are a great lakes requirement not for other inland waters. The throw cushion requirement seems like an outdated regulation IMO. I understand the theory but you could do the same with a lifevest. Somr areas require you to carry a many anchor as well. I don't remember the specifics as its not a requirement where I fish

One thing we were told when fishing lake St. Clair is the flares we had would be considered a gun in Canadian waters. It was a pistol like flare gun. Is this true?
